According to Hawkins on Twitter he had a Rumble spot but gave it to Godfather in exchange for services from his... Rat Pack.

I'm not even sure who Hawkins is, was he one of the Edgeheads way back when?

I'd like to see Hawkins in a Rumble. It really irritated me that he and others missed out on the Rumble event altogether. The Rumble should be an all hands on deck affair BEFORE they reach out to the past stars for guest appearances. They wasted Godfather on a joke elimination, put Khali in the Rumble (when they already had much more capable Kane, Tensai, Brodus, and Ryback to fill the big man quota), and had six wrestlers pulling double duty by working matches AND working in the Rumble match.
They should've put all the big stars in the match and let the lowcard guys work the undercard (or at least the pre-show), OR have the low card guys fill out the Rumble while letting the bigger names have matches.

Curt Hawkins is one of those people who I just wonder what the point of even having him around is. Clearly, WWE has no interest in using him for anything at all, outside of a squash or two ever few months and... Yeah, I know a lot of people for some reason really want the art of the jobber squash to return, but personally I think unless you're making like Umaga or Big Daddy V and just straight up murdering them squash matches don't do a damn thing to make people look credible. If that's all someone is ever going to be used for, I don't see the point in paying them to stick around.
Not to say I have anything against the guy, really I think he seems to be pretty talented and should be used more than he is, it's just never going to happen.

To be fair the Godfather was there for a cheap nostalgia pop, if you're booking it what's better a guy that is guaranteed to come out and pop the crowd for a nostalgia/comedy pop or sending Barretta, Yoshi, or JTG out to silence knowing that they're just there to get destroyed by someone/pad someones elimination stats?

It's all about HOW you use them. Give them a few moments of glory before they get ultimately destroyed. If Godfather had to be in the match, I would've at least had him hit Ho-Train on someone before tossing him out. Had they not fired Trent, Trent could've gotten the cool Paul London/Snitsky type of elimination. A guy like Alex Riley could've gotten fired up and took down as many people many people with spinebusters and dropkicks before some big man like Tensai or some douchey heel like Ziggler takes him out from behind. He too, is a capable flyer who could get some amazing hangtime on an elimination as well The Royal Rumble would have been a nice way to finally introduce Fandango/Johnny Curtis to the main shows as well. Like give him some creepy dancing entrance, he comes in, beats down a few people, asks Daniel Bryan if he can cut in. Bryan shouts NO! and kicks his f***ing head in before tossing him. Hell, it would've been nice to have a moment where everyone is laid out, and Hawkins and Ryder (who fortunately was in the Rumble) are the last two guys standing, and they do the WM sign point. WWE just needs to stop booking these guys like they don't matter. We get that they aren't going to be future World Champions, but that doesn't mean that they should be made to be irrelevant.
