If you ever go to the NFL threads here, you would know that I am a fan of the NY Jets. They have been my team for as long as I can recall. Always have been, probably always will be.
However, along with rooting for them, I will also make fun of them. I will make comments about how Sanchez will throw a pick at the wrong times, or that if they're lucky, they'll get a first down before the half is finished. This makes people who believe that the team is perfectly flawless that I am not an actual fan of them, and that I'm just some bandwagoner who knows nothing.
I believe though that it is the fact that I find flaws in them that makes me more of a fan that those who do not. Nothing in this world is perfect, and people who are fans of something, whether it's a team, a show, a celebrity, etc. , need to recognize that nothing is flawless. Believing so just makes you like you're in denial.
So I ask you, members of the FAN forums: What is the definition of a true fan of something? What it is that gives you the right to say that? Is it being someone who believes it's perfectly flawless? Is it being someone who knows that there are flaws in it? Is there a middle ground not being shown here? Discuss.

'True Fan' has become a negative term depending on the team you root for these days.

Do you genuinely like the team and are you willing/have you been interested when they weren't good, as opposed to someone who just started wearing jersey's because they were fashionable?
If so, you're a true fan.
I do agree that even fans should be able to recognize flaws in something without getting hyper-defensive, but to me, a true fan is someone who likes and supports a team whether they are good or bad.

To me, a true fan is someone who enjoys their interest through thick and thin; that's all there is to it. Some fans may be more interested than others, others more obsessed, others more expressive, but those are just extreme facets of fandom to me.

a fan that's loyal to a team through winning and losing, and it's their first team of choice, and follow them all season. In 20 years let's see how many Miami Heat fans are still there

Someone who loves something because it brings them sincere enjoyment, and isn't influenced by the opinion of the masses. A true fan doesn't care how popular/unpopular their favorite things are, and support them when they're both in and out of favor.

Ideally, it's supposed to mean a fan that follows something regardless of his current popularity, but a lot of people use it as a billy club to hammer other fans on how more knowedgable they (allegedly) are. That's when it gets corrputed.

A totally condescending person who gets on the case of someone for not being as big of a fan as someone else is. Okay, so say if I become a fan of the San Jose Sharks (I am rooting for them these days), someone will get on me for not knowing who the whole roster is or what their records are for the past years.
Or if I am a casual MMA fan but don't know who all the fighters are or know everything there is to know about the sport. I have seen some so-called true fans on Sherdog or even on the IMDB board of "The Ultimate Fighter" who have attitudes like this.
I can understand if someone were to be a fan from the beginning or earlier in life, but I don't like how they have to be douchebags to someone who isn't considered a "true fan" in their eyes.

True fan is someone emotionally invested in a team(or person) regardless of how they are doing.
A true fan does not neccessarily mean that you have to be a knowledge guru of said team/person.
