Mr. Perfect in 02. In the final four no less.[/quote Well, they announced him on Raw before the event, so it wasn't a total surprise. Still a big mark-out moment. Jericho this year was a huge one.

Cena, '08. His entire appearance was so surreal - he came out of nowhere, no news whatsoever of a return anytime soon at that point, and he won it at #30 a year after the Undertaker won it at #30 (his first win and the first time #30 ever won). Mr. Perfect in 02. In the final four no less. It wasn't a surprise. Leading into that Rumble, WWE aired hype promos on TV saying that Goldust, Godfather, Val Venis, and Mr. Perfect would be returning at the Rumble. Not only that, but on the actual PPV they aired clips of all or most of the participants and it included clips of Mr. Perfect. People were certainly surprised he was in the final 4, that's for sure.

The mention of Mr. Perfect has got me thinking...
When it comes to the Rumble, what's better: Surprise or Suspense?
In 2002, WWE aired a video hyping that Mr. Perfect would return at the 2002 Royal Rumble. This did create buzz and anticipation for him returning to WWE and being in the Rumble. In this way, people were looking forward to it in the weeks before the Rumble. During the Rumble, fans were anticipating and waiting for Mr. Perfect to show up. When he finally did late in the Rumble, the crowd gave him a huge pop.
With this approach WWE was able to create suspense for when he would show up. Fans anticipated it and wanted it. When they finally got it they reacted very positively.
Then there is the surprise approach. Fans don't know it's coming. It catches them off guard. They pop huge and have a big emotional reaction.
I think both approaches have their merits. I think for cases like Cena returning in MSG, you have to go with surprise. However, I think there are merits in building anticipation. It engages the audiences for a longer period of time and builds up to the moment when they come out. I guess it depends on the superstar and the manner of their return to WWE.

Jericho, by way of awesome cardio after 6 months of not wrestling. Maybe Rock should have taken notes from him.
