Yeah, it was a bad nickname. Besides the obvious racial implications, I didn't like them straying from anything Irish with him. His whole character has been based around Ireland, Gaelic culture and Irish folklore. His promos, his stories, everything was based around the character all connected, except for the whole "Great White" thing. Or "White Noise". I also miss the Fiery Red Hand, apart of the many aspects of his character and look. They should just have Sheamus come up with every nickname for his character, as he obviously knows a ton about Irish history and has used it throughout his early and current career. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hand_of_Ulsteren.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brogueen.wiktionary.org/wiki/laochen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_cross

Besides, "The Celtic Warrior" is sort of the perfect nickname for him, best to stick with that.

Matthews called Kofi a Wildcat tonight. That said, it is still kinda dumb. Though I do miss nicknames that were part of the entrance name. Such days as Bret "Hit Man" Hart, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Jake "The Snake" Roberts and such. Those can be cool, but whoever decided to call Orton the Apex Predator in the first place, much less stick it in his entrance, needs to be smacked.

Why did they call him that to begin with? Was it because he is pale?

Exactly, Sheamus' can easily be the deepest on the roster with a little expansion, yet they seem to be obsessed with pointing out how pale he is, as though he has no other distinguishing gimmick.

The design makes my eyes hurt. No idea how this passed muster. By the way, thanks! The worst was that he wore this abomination....for months. At least they had the decency to castrate the Sin Cara botch.

Even WCW knew that calling Scott Steiner "White Thunder" was a bad idea, so no idea how the 'E thought that the Great White was a good idea.

Sounded too racist. Now if Shark Boy was in WWE, the "Great White" would have been fine

The only semi-decent thing that came from the nickname was the name "White Noise" for his finisher, and that's only because it reminds me of a 60s experimental electronic music group formed by members of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. I always think of the Don DeLillo novel and imagine Sheamus getting a gimmick as the WWE's literacy advocate. "READ A GOOD BOOK, FELLA!"

But alas that will never happen because people rather stereotypes and I kind of get why WWE do it. I have a fantasy of Fergal Devitt coming in and calling Sheamus out on using a stereotypical Irish name and exploiting his heritage etc.

Why did they call him that to begin with? Was it because he is pale? Either that or he's a white supremacist behind the scenes. I can't comprehend how anyone in this thread doesn't see how this nickname can easily be misconstrued as racist.

Even WCW knew that calling Scott Steiner "White Thunder" was a bad idea, so no idea how the 'E thought that the Great White was a good idea. I think its more because WCW didn't want him associated with Thunder. Even they knew the show was bad. WWE should had called him the "The Great White Hope" instead.

So what did the actual shirt look like? Clearly it's bad enough that WWE took it down but do no copies exist like of the Sin Cara penis shirt? I could never figure out what this was supposed to be. A cross with an Afro with an undone bow tie ascending to heaven?

The nickname suddenly made sense during the Del Rio feud, when Sheamus' views on people of different ethnicities became clear.

Maybe the band Great White got upset. Can't imagine why they'd be upset by their name and something burning.
