'Argo' really is the best directed film of anything this year. NO SPOILERS: The fact that he could draw THAT level of tension out of a real life event that everybody already knows the ending to is among the greatest directing feats this century. It's an absolute crime he isn't nominated.
It's also a crime Madagascar 3 isn't nominated for best animated feature either, but that's another thread.

Affleck's "Argo f*** yourself!" campaign against the Oscars continues.

Everyone was making a big deal about Bigelow's snub for Zero Dark Thirty, but I thought Affleck was the far worse Oscar snub this year. He's cleaning up everywhere else, too.

I would not be surprised if the Academy in a vain attempt to save face are getting together some special award Oscar to give to Ben. They have done that in the past but mainly to really well received movies that missed out on a best picture nomination.

It makes no sense to have a film nominated for Best Picture without the director being nominated too.
The Oscars are ridiculous

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how you can have a best picture and not also have the best director for the same movie.
It just defies all logic.

I thought more people were surprised at Affleck getting snubbed then Bigelow, though I did hear a lot of talk on how neither got nominated. It makes no sense to have a film nominated for Best Picture without the director being nominated too. The Oscars are ridiculous Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how you can have a best picture and not also have the best director for the same movie. It just defies all logic. That'll happen when there are more Best Picture nominees (9) than Best Director nominees (5).

Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Krzysztof Kieslowski, every Asian director except Ang Lee and the entire French New Wave never won a Best Director Oscar either. Stick with that group, Affleck!!

I would not be surprised if the Academy in a vain attempt to save face are getting together some special award Oscar to give to Ben. They are. It's called Best Picture. ;D (He'd get a statue along with co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov). Seriously, if Ben had gotten nominated for director, they would have honored him there and given Picture to something else (since everyone seemed to be banking on Lincoln, although I don't think Lincoln was ever as strong for the win as many pundits were predicting). But the freak snub now gives Argo the chance to become only the fourth film in history to win Best Picture without a corresponding directing nomination, and the last since Driving Miss Daisy in 1989 (the other two were Grand Hotel and the very first Best Picture winner Wings). They'll want to make amends and not come across as ludicrously out-of-touch as they do right now, which is ironic since this year's lineup arguably has some of the biggest critical/auteur cred of any lineup in ages, yet in trying to come across as on-the-pulse with their choices, they ended up missing the mark almost entirely. So yeah, they'll desperately want to get Ben up there. It's peculiar to think of a previous winner as being owed (although it happens, like the previous thirty years before Meryl Streep won her third Oscar last year), but that's exactly the situation they're in with Affleck. This has been one of the craziest, most precedent-defying Oscar seasons in history, and I have no idea (nor does anyone else, really) why it's happened this way, other than perhaps the implementation of online voting and the earlier balloting dates. But if this ends up with Argo winning Best Picture, I don't think all the snubs in the world will have me regretting that winning moment. Seriously, Ben is one of my favorite celebrities, period (hell, Matt Damon too. Such intelligent, down-to-Earth guys who know their shit. I really wish they'd make a movie together again). I'd love to see him up there.

This is exactly what I thought as I left the theater. Like, "Was I really THAT much into a movie that I already know the ending to?" No idea why he isn't nominated

I'm just glad the days of people sh*tting all over Ben Affleck's "lackluster" career (when compared to Matt Damon) have been officially buried dead.

I was underwhelmed by Argo, and it wasn't due to hype or anything. It was just another movie to me, it didn't feel special at all, though it certainly wasn't bad. The praise I read for it makes me think I should watch it again.
