So I'm sure some of you have heard about this story(since it actually went beyond Japan in news infamy ). An idol singer(Minami Minegishi to be exact) in the Japanese pop group AKB48 was severely punished because she was photographed leaving the house of a guy. Girls in japanese pop groups are pressured to appear virginal and available but AKB48 is the absolute worst. She shaved her head in an act of apology.
This video explains things a little more.
Here's the original video.
Makes me glad I listen to Momoiro Clover Z instead.

Does this mean she's joining the Japanese chapter of the Straight Edge Society?

It seems each time I hear something about this group, it's always negative.
By the way, the sugar rush song in Wreck It Ralph is by them.

By the way, the sugar rush song in Wreck It Ralph is by them. I love that song. It gets stuck in my head all the time. Now I can tell people it's a punk rock anthem. (For what it's worth, I think this is pretty ghastly all around, as far as being punished for associating with a man. It's a terrible message to send.)

Absolutely gross and deplorable in this age to prevent a woman from having ANY relationship.

Absolutely gross and deplorable in this age to prevent a woman from having ANY relationship. She knew the risks when becoming an Idol. Idols have very strict guidelines they have to follow. She's lucky she still has a job. Most Idols get fired for this kind of thing.

Absolutely gross and deplorable in this age to prevent a woman from having ANY relationship. This is unfortunately commonplace in the Japanese music industry. They are extremely sexist over there.

The whole country is pretty sexist still.......and racist......and xenophobic....... But hey, at least it's whacky.

Japan, and to a degree Asia as a whole, still have a lot of progress to make.
This just reminds me of the Aya Hirano backlash, only worse.

Makes me glad I listen to Momoiro Clover Z instead. I'm a big fan of Sphere, and when some people found out that Aki Toyosaki was living with a guy, I was glad that the reaction from not only the other members but the management as well was basically "Yeah, personal lives has nothing to do with the profession of being in the band. Please move along."

It's a case of the stupid misogynistic fan culture ruining it for everyone. Nobody chooses to have those jerks run your life.

XD The thing that make this stuff much worse for akb members is the fact that the super group is made up of 40+ members(with smaller subgroups). Theirs a hierarchy within them and the girls have to climb the rankings in order to get better spots(such as appearing in more videos) and can easily fall down the ladder as well. Which I'm sure leads to the girls being constantly on pins and needles. They're supposed to appear as complete virgins available to their shut-in fans, but constantly have suggestive lyrics and videos. Here's a commercial they appeared on.

OH MY GOD A GIRL SHAVED HER HEAD That's not the point, the point is she is being blaming for dating. She is being scorned for being a woman and having a love/possibly sex life. And the fact that she felt the need to sacrifice part of her own body in apology says a lot about the status of women's rights in that country. And before you say "hair grows back", the problem is the massage it sends. She's basically saying "if you're a woman and you date outside of marriage, you deserve all the hate you get".

Queen Elizabeth the first drove by while they were filming this, stopped and remarked "It's been done."
Seriously though that's messed up. Obviously things need to change on that front.

And before you say "hair grows back", the problem is the massage it sends. She's basically saying "if you're a woman and you date outside of marriage, you deserve all the hate you get". Wrong. Japanese culture has no problem per se with dating outside of marriage. The issue here is the creepy cult like nature of Idol worship. It is only Idols who aren't supposed to be dating and such because, as glitch said they are supposed to appear as pure virgins to fuel the delusional fantasies of their otaku(and not the Western definition of otaku) fans. Idol worship is, however, far and wide one of the creepiest things to come from Japan though. And the thing is the Idols pretty much have to follow the guidelines if they want to keep their job as an Idol, because the Idol industry is basically a constantly churning machine. They cycle out Idols pretty much yearly as it is. Hell they even started creating fictional Idols, making it even harder for them to keep their jobs.
