That's not the point, the point is she is being blaming for dating. She is being scorned for being a woman and having a love/possibly sex life. And the fact that she felt the need to sacrifice part of her own body in apology says a lot about the status of women's rights in that country. And before you say "hair grows back", the problem is the massage it sends. She's basically saying "if you're a woman and you date outside of marriage, you deserve all the hate you get". Wrong. Japanese culture has no problem per se with dating outside of marriage. The issue here is the creepy cult like nature of Idol worship. It is only Idols who aren't supposed to be dating and such because, as glitch said they are supposed to appear as pure virgins to fuel the delusional fantasies of their otaku(and not the Western definition of otaku) fans. Idol worship is, however, far and wide one of the creepiest things to come from Japan though. And the thing is the Idols pretty much have to follow the guidelines if they want to keep their job as an Idol, because the Idol industry is basically a constantly churning machine. They cycle out Idols pretty much yearly as it is. Hell they even started creating fictional Idols, making it even harder for them to keep their jobs. Yeah, it's because she's classed as an idol. There are lots of female singers in Japan that date or get married and that's fine (see Ayumi Hamasaki or Koda Kumi for two really big names that have done both... although not successfully in Ayu's case) - it's the idols that have the trouble. It really is a different and very creepy world. AKB48 sing these suggestive songs that are usually written by their creepy manager, they pose in lingerie and tease being "close" to each other, but they also have to appear virginal and whiter than white at all times to appease their creepy fans who really should know better. It's a ridiculous situation. And you can't blame the girls for signing up to it. They join these groups when they're still in junior high school - they have no idea what they're signing up for. They're just used and spat out and if they fall short of what's expected of them then there's another 48+ girls waiting in line to take their place. The whole idol culture needs to be destroyed but as long as they're still bringing in the cash for their management and label (and AKB are, you can't move without seeing them everywhere) then it'll just continue on.

Absolutely gross and deplorable in this age to prevent a woman from having ANY relationship. She knew the risks when becoming an Idol. Idols have very strict guidelines they have to follow. She's lucky she still has a job. Most Idols get fired for this kind of thing. I really can't help but see that there is something seriously screwed up with most of the otaku culture in Japan. I remember some serious backlash over one manga character already having a previous relationship. I can like whacky, but when stuff in real life gets f***ed up that's something else.

It's almost as crazy as anime moe worship, and fans of shipping, or possibly it's on the same. Does this rule also apply to male singers as well? If there are any idols of such. And is this only a Japanese thing? What about K-pop singers?

Oh, Japan, you wacky funsters.
Never change. We Americans appreciate you taking some of the "worst behaved people" heat off of us.

huh... Perfect Blue does have basis in reality, after all. Actually, yeah. Perfect Blue, while a little bit embellished, is a great example of how f***ed up the Idol worship culture can be. ESPECIALLY how the main character's stalker reacts to her doing a nude scene.

Like, just because you know something bad is gonna happen to you if you try to chase your dreams it doesn't mean this something bad is okay. I mean, actors know that paparazzi are gonna follow them around. But that doesn't mean that they aren't scum of the earth, like the guy who actually sneaked into a school to slip a note inside J.K Rowling's daughter's backpack. It's a messed up culture.

I don't think anybody's saying that she deserved it. But at the same time, in the back of her mind, it's something that she should have been mentally prepared to face, and maybe had a plan of action laid out for if such a situation was to arise. Of course, there's no guarantee that it would be 100% successful, but it wouldn't have hurt to have had one. Regardless of how unpleasant or unfair it is, life is never incident-free. (EDIT : Yes, I'm aware that somebody's going to extrapolate this out to implying that I'm saying the same things about rape. I most certainly assure you that I am NOT.)
