Madonna would have to be pretty high on the list. I had thought about that too. People have kind of forgotten, though, because she's not quite as ubiquitous as she had been, these days.

Bill Gates or Richard Branson currently.
Steve Jobs probably owned the "Corporate Rich Dude Title" at the time of his death.

I'm surprised Hulk Hogan hasn't been mentioned. Not exactly a hot topic, but still a household name.

I'll exclude royalty and politicians
In terms of celebrities/media figures, it's Madonna.

Actor has to be Arnold Schwarzenegger. Honorable Mention to Jackie Chan, who's a star in part of the world, and a legend in the other part.

Can you really say 'The Pope' though? How many people can name him? How many people can recognise him without his Popemobile? How many people noticed the changeover?
I know the answer is, in varying degrees, 'some' to 'lots,' but my point is he is not exactly a super-celeb. He's 'The Pope,' if you made a dog 'The Pope' he'd be the most famous dog on Earth, but most people would not be able to pick it out from another labrador.

The Pope had significantly more recognition when it was John Paul II, of course, but a good deal of the world would still have knowledge of the Pope.
Madonna is a good answer, absolutely. I may find her a bit overrated, but she is undeniably iconic.

Yeah, exactly, knowledge of The Pope, not Pope Whatsisname the 100th.

I'll say Portia Perez. Or maybe Kristie Alley. It's gotta be Obama right now. To paraphrase Dave Chappelle, the President of the United States is so famous that if someone were to suck his dick they themselves would become famous. So that's how Dave became famous.

IMO this list begins and ends with Muhammad Ali For the genral population in the US where he is still a national icon, perhaps. Outside the US I'd narrow it down to sports fans, as a lot of the current generation who don't follow sports have little to no idea who he is.

If you are considering Usain Bolt, you HAVE to also consider Michael Phelps. The dude is the most decorated Olympian in history, and his quest to achieve this status was one of the major selling points/stories of the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
