I always wondered this, i mean, i would have loved to have had actual action figures of dark helmet, lone star, lone star's flying winnebago, mega maid, etc. I know the film was a parody, but considering they made figures out of everything else out around that time,,

It was part of the deal they had with Lucas that they couldn't put out any merch.

Mel Brooks asked Lucas if he could make the movie that so heavily copies Star Wars and got the OK as long as he didn't make any merchandise. You will notice the Space Balls merchandise in the movie is actually Transformers material with the Spaceballs Logo on it

This is something I don't get when it comes to copyright. I have always understood it that theoretically you can parody something and it falls under fair use. Why did they even have to ask permission to make Space Balls? Did they have to get permission from the people who own Star Trek and Alien as well?
South Park does it all the time and I'm pretty sure they don't usually pay anyone unless they get sued.

It was part of the deal they had with Lucas that they couldn't put out any merch. It even makes sense, parody-wise. Since SW and Lucas made so much money from merchandising, the parody disregards it. I don't think they had to, but since they did it would be breaching a contract (not sure if it's written or not, but I do believe even an oral contract is valid as long as there are witnesses to confirm it happened) and Lucas would be able to sue them if they did.

While it would've been cool, they understood that this was purely a parody movie and they were just going to leave it at that. The merchandise was a meta reference to the popularity of Star Wars merchandise.
That's also why you had most of the Alien cast at the restaraunt and the Chestbuster doing a Vaudevillian act. This movie was well-recieved by those that were being spoofed to be willing to go those lengths.

I imagine it was a gentleman's agreement between Lucas an Brooks more then an iron clad contract. "Hey George, mind if I make fun of your movies a little?" "Ya, knock yourself out. Just don't step on my merchandise guys toes"

Also, Industrial Light and Magic did some special effects work for the movie. Also, Lucas allowed them to use the escape pod scene from Star Wars for when Megamaid self-destructs.

There should be a stand alone Star Wars/Spaceballs crossover movie
