I am currently re-reading the entire series so it got me thinking about how many failed attempts their have been in adapting this into a movie or tv shows. They have been trying to adapt since like 1999 and every time the ball gets rolling the project is dropped. The one that really got me excited was the HBO show they were working on in 2006 which was reportedly going to have each issue of the comic being turned into a one hour episode and then that was dropped in 2008. Look here is another film adaption in the works. www.imdb.com/title/tt1316546/ Will this ever see the light of day?

TV Exec-Interesting pitch, guys. So, how does it end?
And that's why it will never make it to TV/film.

I would LOVE for Preacher to be adapted into a live action television series. But let's be honest, it's never going to happen unfortunately. The show itself would piss off way too many people and wouldn't last an episode, let alone a season which is very unfortunate.
Being a fan of film and someone who would love to get involved with cinema/television creation. There have been three big dream projects that I've envisioned for myself. 1) A Thundercats live action film, 2) A Final Fantasy VII live action film, and 3) The Preacher adapted to a television show.
It could be done, there's just no way a studio or any executive is going to touch it given the source material.

Probably not.
It's a Vertigo Title and DC rarely lends out the movie rights to their non-superhero titles.
Brian Wood's DMZ could have been a series with AMC, but Vertigo didn't want to sign off on it even though it would have been f***ING amazing and Wood was on board with the idea.
Which just goes to show DC doesn't know how to make money on a comic unless its got "-man" at the end.

It would be so watered down that the only thing in common with the comic would be the name, Preacher, and some of the character names.

There were rumours around Fables as well, but DC mucked that up and it became 'Once upon a Time.' Not sure how true that is, but certainly Willingham was talking about it happening and then the idea just vanished

time was, I'd say "never" because of how many uptight moral guardians would have a fit about it, but now I think it could happen. it'd have to be an HBO-style thing, though. too much story to tell in one movie, and there's no way it could end up on regular network TV without being toned down to the point where they can't even tell the same story.
and given the abortion that Constantine was, I really don't want to see another Vertigo book get ravaged just because some dickless director is afraid of offending somebody.

There's a new show coming out called "The Returned" which seems to clearly be a direct copy of Tim Seeley's REVIVAL: www.bleedingcool.com/2013/01/23/sometimes-imitation-is-not-the-most-sincere-form-of-flattery/Basically they worked with ABC on a potential show, ABC passed on it saying it wasn't right for their audience, then announced that they're making a show with the exact same basic plot, but based on a prose novel that hasn't even come out yet. Sucks too, cause Revival's a great comic that would work brilliantly as an hour long show on Showtime or something.
