When I got a Wii in 2007, it was my first opportunity to play the games from the GameCube. However, those games would occasionally crash in the middle of playing, with a black error screen, and I couldn't even reset, I had to turn the power off. Has anyone else encountered this on the Wii? I feel like getting an actual GameCube, they're going for cheap last time I checked.

Are you sure that the discs are free of scratches? Also, you should check and see if your Wii is one of those with defective lasers. I remember hearing that some Wii's before 2008 had wonky lasers that wouldn't read games properly.

Most of the GameCube games have had scratches. Actually what I should be asking is if anyone with the original GameCube has seen Black Screens Of Death on occasion.
And I have had issues with the Wii reading discs now that you mention it. It's had occasional problems with reading regular Wii games as well. It will take a long time sometimes, or maybe not read it at all (but I would put it back in and then it's all fine).

You may want to check the disc.
I had similar issues with my Day of Reckoning 2 game when it came to Muhammad Hassan's entrance and I would get that error message when his video was being played.
