I think it helped in my case that I didn't really like the original that much.

I love this game so much. I never understood why people thought it was hard. I guess some people like how the later games practically hold your hand in order to beat it. The difficulty for an NES game wasn't even THAT steep compared to a lot of other games. Hell, I don't even think it's that much more difficult than the original.
The ONLY tough part for me (and by tough, I mean I have to prepare for by having a good 5 or 6 extras lives on hand) would be the trip to the last dungeon. Holy crap, they do not hold back. I mean, just getting there is a pain in the ass, and are likely going to lose a life or two. The bridge bastards and then those caves you're likely going to use the fairy power for...I mean it really is the point of no return. There is also a part once you get to Death Mountain after the second dungeon that becomes a major difficulty curve, but if you approach it the right way, you should be okay.
The music is awesome in the game as well, although the overworld music is crap, but the dungeon music is one of the best in the series.
Again, most of the flack comes from how this is different than the other Zeldas, something I'm completely okay with. I guess if Nintendo ever wanted to progress the way you play, they could have made a game more similar to Crystalis (another underrated classic) with the RPG elements.
My top 10 Zeldas:
The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask Twilight Princess Adventure of Link Ocarina of Time Link to the Past Link's Awakening Windwaker Skyward Sword Wand of Gamelon (nostalgia purely for the music and voice acting, which was mind boggling at the time)

My favorite Zeldas tend to be the more different ones, although I adore Link to the Past. Games like Majora's Mask, Zelda 2, Link's Awakening, etc. Minish Cap was really good, too.
