A gulf is actually starting to build in the Eastern Conference between playoff and non-playoff teams. I know it's early and there are games in hand to take into account, but the drop-off between the Leafs in 7th and the Lightning in 8th is now five points.
Are we gonna see teams in the East start to pull away this early?

This might be the Leafs year to make the playoffs.

real_ESPNLeBrun According to NHL memo sent to 30 teams, no longer is the idea to go to 4 conferences, but rather 2 conferences with two divisions each Pierre LeBrun real_ESPNLeBrun The Eastern Conference would have the Atlantic and Central divisions, the Western Conference would have the Mid-West and Pacific divisions

The Kings win their 4th in a row and 6 out of the last 7. Also beating the Ducks especially with how they've been playing lately feels almost as good as jizzing. In other words: I'm in Calgary now and got to see them play the Flames. They completely dominated them. Looked like men against boys. So much better watching a game live because you can really zone in on players to see what they do every shift. Pick up a lot of things the players do that the camera doesn't. Doughty basically had a perfect game and my God was he fun to watch. On the other hand, Penner looked awful that game, slower than normal. I was wondering if he was playing hurt. He was the only King that didn't have a really good game.

Flyers get back Simon Gagne for a conditional 4th rounder. I'm not sure how much he has left but it's great to see him back in orange in black! Now what rhymes with Gagne!?

To the Flyer fans on here and fellow Atlantic Division fans, what did you think of these jerseys and this guy?

I don't get divisional playoffs. Like why kill the great late round matchups?

Never liked divisional playoff concept back in the day- 4th in the division got in even if they weren't top 8 in the conference.
1992- the Whalers made the playoffs based on finishing 4th in their division despite having the 2nd worst record in the Wales Conference and fewer wins AND points than non-playoff teams Philadelphia and the Islanders.
I like the idea of interconference matchups in rounds 1 and 2. Plus, it made for way too much predictability.

I would also get sick and tired of the same playoff matches every year minus the Conference Final and SCF. Like does Bettman believe the best way to gain a bigger American audience is repetition with the same matchups and featured teams?

If I'm pretty much guaranteed to see Pens/Flyers and Bruins/Canadians in the playoffs every year then no I personally wouldn't get sick of it and I have a good number of American fans wouldn't either. This whole conference realignment and playoff format is being made with getting as much out of the NBC TV deal as possible. Mainly there focusing on making already established rivalries the focus point of the league on TV. Most established fans won't like it but these games draw big TV Numbers so they would be stupid to stop now. NBC Rivalry Night has been a huge success even when some of the games aren't even between rivals. However casual or new fans don't realize this and they tune on the hype NBC and the NHL make.

I think the Rags were cursed by everyone declaring them the Stanley Cup favorites because of Nash and Lundqvist.

I didn't expect it, but Prust, Fedotenko, and Anisimov were big losses. Don't regret the Nash trade at all but not a lot of depth

At this point, the Atlantic Division is basically a Devils-Penguins free-for-all.

By the way, did anybody else see this: Ryder back to Montreal for Erik Cole? Bit of a random trade with a slight advantage for the Habs. Although, didn't Ryder have a real bad run with Montreal the first time around?
