There was a topic about which LP'ers people watch a bit ago and this was something that was brought up, but after seeing other people Let's Play using that "style", I'm really curious about why it's so popular. I can understand wanting to make a Let's Play video and I can even understand using a camcorder if it's done decently (which it's often not, I admit), but what is the point of screaming and over-exaggerating what's happening in the game? I'm not saying I always expect deep discussion about a game even though videos posted on Youtube can be viewed by anyone, but I just don't understand why people make videos that way.

AVGN got popular, so people have to mimic his style. His style is yelling and screaming and swearing, so that's what they end up doing.

It works best when playing scary games. There's some people who get genuinely scared and freak out and scream over something, and seeing their facial reactions adds to the humor. Then there's other people, like PewDiePie, who just fakes it the whole time and screams and rambles like a manchild while shouting "rape".
Other than horror games, I really find no purpose for it.

The worst part is that people new to the LP community assume that acting like a manchild is what is to be expected.
Stuff like Game Grumps doesn't really help but it feels genuine in that it's two friends just chilling and playing games while having fun.

I dislike PewDiePie and all of his ilk. The only ones I can tolerate that are anything like him are the Game Grumps and Two Best Friends Play. And, the latter is only when Woolie is not involved, as he tends to bring their series down to that wretched standard of "Broing" and obnoxiousness.

I'll admit, some of PewDiePie's Happy Wheels videos crack me up, but not everybody is cut out for that. That style works for him, not for others.

The only people I like who go nutso like that are the Game Grumps. I can't resist JonTron's "WWAHHHHHH!" Ned Flander's girly voice, or when Egorapter does his over-exaggerated surprise voice ("AW DUDE, HOLY SHIT!"). I admit I haven't seen PewDiePie, but I hear a lot of...unfavorable things.
I feel a similiar way with game reviews. That's why I've opted for the serious approach opposed to dropping F-bombs left and right like a try-hard 'Nerd clone.

Huh, maybe I'm just lucky with the LPs I check but I don't find this style that common, certainly not enough to be an annoyance. I've been following LPs by Spoony, ProtonJon, Chuggaaconroy, Game Grumps, Suede and tons of other people and most were rather calm, funny and sometimes even informative (especially ProtonJon and Chugga, they really seem to be doing a lot of research for their LPs).

I unsubscribed to Pewdies channel some time ago. It was the same old stuff all the time, and his fanatical fanbase is atrocious. I'll watch 2 best friends, Yamimash, Markiplier, with Cynicalbrit and Angry Joe for reviews and stuff.

I hate that style of LP, obnoxious and highly stupid. AVGN is nothing like those douchebags, all his hate and vitriol is usually warranted by the s***ty games he's playing. I prefer more laidback LPers who aren't exactly the best at the games they play. I watch Kikoskia and Deceased Crab mostly, with the occasional Jefmajor strategy game LP.
All three Deceased Crab La-Mulana LPs are the most entertaining LPs (especially when he gets to Hell Temple)

To be fair, my inspiration for this thread came from a retsupurae video about a guy playing "I Wanna Be The Guy: Gaiden"(another trend I don't understand about LP). I dunno though, I just find it strange that with all the negative opinions PewDiePie and the like get, that someone would willingly play a game like that in hopes for attention.

AVGN at least there's context to the swearing and the yelling. And James Rolfe himself is a pretty laid back guy. Met him a couple of times and he's like the polar opposite of his AVGN character.
