No, not the recent Death OF the Family, the original story where Jason Todd meets his demise.
I was wondering what people think of this story, as I myself have just finally read it.
It does seem strange to throw that whole terrorist angle and things into the mix for the story, but it does tie into Jason's demise well.
Though the addition of Superman at the end of the story seems kind of an odd addition...
But anyway, what are the thoughts, and considering Jason has returned, does it still hold up?

It's one of the greatest and most important Batman stories ever. It's amazingly well done. It's definitely a depressing read though.

Stupid as hell when it brings real world politics into it and Batman STILL doesn't kill Joker.
Up to that point, yeah, great read.

Amazingly sad, but extremely well written story. I can't read it though, without immediately reading "A Lonely Place of Dying" right after to lift the spirits back up.

I haven't read the book, but I have seen the movie.
I thought it was great. Although I know it removes a bit from the original story in a few ways.

it hasn't aged very well. the political element feels tacked on and more than a little offensive (both culturally and to the audience's intelligence). and on top of that the only reason the story ended the way it did was because some vocal minority called into a hotline repeatedly and none of the kids who didn't want Robin to die could afford the expensive phone call in the first place. IMO acting like Jason was some aberration that the fans all hated doesn't really bare up when you look at the evidence. that said, when Jason DID come back, it let to a lot of really good stories.

Wasn't the vote really close?

At least according to wikipedia which sourced interviews from Denny O'Neil, editor of the time, that it was only 65 votes between but one person had hundreds of calls in favor of death. But the reason Jason Todd was chosen to begin with was because O'Neil didn't think the character was that popular anyway.

I just wonder how the rest of this storyline would have gone had the vote said "live". Besides this one panel we've seen:

It's a little bit dated now, but the core concept of the story is still great, not to mention how important the story is to the entire Batman mythos.

Something I've wondered, did The Dark Knight Returns kinda cause fans to vote in favor of Jason dying in A Death in The Family? Because in DKR Bruce Wayne is haunted by something that happened to Jason Todd that in all likely hood caused Batman's retirement and Alfred is kinda hesitant about Bruce taking up a new sidekick because of what happened to Jason. So did all of this cryptic talk of Jason Todd's death caused people to vote in favor of killing him off to make DKR's mentioning of Jason dying a self-fulfilling prophecy?

I hated it, the whole Joker as Iran ambassador to the U.N. thing was incredibly stupid and didn't care much for the story before that either. I did like A Lonely Place of Dying though, so it gave us that at least.
Definitely an important story though, that's really the best I can say about it.

I just wonder how the rest of this storyline would have gone had the vote said "live". Besides this one panel we've seen: I think it certainly would be an interesting side story for DC to explore. It would be a stand alone but I'd be very curious to see what would result from Todd surviving and how Batman would be nowadays.

Batman STILL doesn't kill Joker. Seriously. That mofo has a death count in the millions and neither Batman nor the proper authorities still can't kill him for some reason.

Gotham's got a corrupt legal system, thus he gets off with a mere insanity plea. Though in at least one universe he finally gets what's coming to him. Spoiler from the comic based on the game "Injustice: Gods Among Us". {Spoiler}

I can see not killing a normal criminal, but when you got a sick and twisted guy like the Joker that doesn't show any chance of changing...

I just wonder how the rest of this storyline would have gone had the vote said "live". Besides this one panel we've seen: So just to be clear--the story would have been about Batman going full psycho and carrying Jason Todd's corpse around fooling himself into thinking he was alive like some sort of psychotic Weekend at Bernies right? Because that's all I can infer from that smile.

Its just one of those comic laws that doesn't hold up in reality. Yeah, the Joker would have gotten the death sentence a thousand times over in the real world but if you kill him in the comic then you lose a great character that's been around for decades. You just have to kind of roll with it.
