Well then, I'm glad I spent most of this week working on basically the same column for a different site. From a wrestling journalist standpoint, I get so freaking excited for weeks like this when wrestling's just fun and I get to write about fun shit. From a writer's point of view, well what the f*** am I gonna do now?

I don't understand how Razor Ramon was a bad gimmick. The character was basically a latino drug peddler/thug, a modern day version of the mafiosi character played by various wrestlers for decades, a character that still would have worked years later in the Attitude era. If Scott Hall being caucasian makes it a bad gimmick then every ethnic/foreigner character played by someone from a different ethnic group is a bad one. I's go with IRS, a wrestling tax man is cheap heat personified, something that should have very little staying power, but Mike Rotunda played him to perfection. Shawn Michaels should also be on the list, he started out as George Michael and quickly became a male stripper, something that should never have gotten over... It didn't at first, but they kept pushing him because he was good in the ring and eventually he made it work.

Taker is the very personification of this.

None of these were dumb gimmicks
This wasn't either. It only became dumb when he turned face and added a mini-clown
Neither of these gimmicks were saved. Mainly because neither performer understood that the gimmicks could only work if they became serious wrestlers during the matches.

Taker is the very personification of this. My first thought was Taker. If you give that same gimmick to any other wrestler there's a 99.999999999% chance that it tanks horribly.

It's as bad a gimmick as, well, doing an exact copy of the Joker, or having a dude basically be Beetlejuice. It's transparent in its lack of originality. So, yeah, the performance saved it. Speaking of which, no way in hell Waylon Mercy shouldn't be on here (or, come to think of it, Bray Wyatt).

None of these were dumb gimmicks I think The Undertaker is about as dumb a gimmick as you can get. He's dead, he has magical powers and draws strength from an urn. The character and the portrayal is awesome but the actual idea is way beyond any suspension of disbelief.

That is the one thing that I want to hear Taker talk about though, what was he thinking when Vince told him that he wanted to bring him in as an old west zombie mortician?

The magical powers element of the Undertaker came in later though. His first incarnation was just a silent monster who seemingly could not be hurt.

Most wrestling gimmicks are knockoffs of something, either pop culture or from other wrestling gimmicks, so it takes more than that to make a gimmick wrestlecrap. Even gimmicks that seem original are often copies of copies, I mean look at Sting and the Ultimate Warrior, they started life as knockoffs of the Road Warriors and the Road Warriors themselves were inspired by the look of Vernon Wells in the second mad max film... The Road Warrior. I'm more inclined to feel that a gimmick is wrestlecrappy if it's directly ripping off a recent pop culture phenomena, like Waylon Mercy ripping off Cape fear, or Joker Sting, however, Razor Ramon was done nearly a decade after Scarface.

You don't see how a superhero, an Elvis Impersonator, a clown or a zombie mortician could be considered dumb gimmicks? They are absolutely dumb gimmicks on paper... the way the wrestlers portrayed them is what made them work. The magical powers element of the Undertaker came in later though. His first incarnation was just a silent monster who seemingly could not be hurt. Not really, the magic urn came in with Paul Bearer, which was only a few months after his debut. edit: February 1991, so like 3 months.
