This begins and ends with modern "Southern wrestling." It doesn't even have anything to do with the physical matches. It's the gimmicks, or rather the complete and total lack thereof, that gets me. The gimmicks that do exist usually reference things that I, as a person who was raised in the "north," can't relate to. Take the promotion formally known as NWA Anarchy for example. Most of the characters are based around broad archetypes - the underdog, the angry fat guy, Jim Cornette - instead of focused, developed ideas. The lone exception to this is Dan Wilson and company's "evil Satanic" thing, which, again, is completely foreign to me. The "Satanists" I went to high school with were more "black T-shirts and metal" and less "goat masks and pentagrams." Compare that to IWC, who currently has a rookie working a "pro bowler with anger management issues" gimmick. Yes, it's as goofy as hell. Still, I'll take that over, say, Jeremy Vain any day character-wise, (His last name is Vain and he, at least for a while, came out to "You're So Vain." Care to guess what his gimmick is?)

PWG.
Before I get crucified, let me say that I have not written off PWG completely, and I plan to buy a show so I can watch one from top to bottom before I make my final judgment.
At this point, however, a lot of what I've seen (previews, matches, etc.) ranges from entertaining spot-fests/good wrestling to infuriating indy s***. In fact, when I watched the triple threat ladder match from last year that everyone was calling match of the year, I really didn't like it because of the dangerous spots, irresponsible head shots, and the camera missing some of the big spots.
There seems to be a few things that I could really like about PWG, but there are also things about it that have turned me off on independent wrestling in general. The way that everyone talks it up like it's the greatest promotion out there also isn't helping in what feels like the build-up to a fall.

I did a search for Cheesecake Man on the SHIMMER forums and here's a quote in regards to what he is all about I honestly thought this was going to be the guy who sent fan mail (an actual written letter, if I remember right) demanding that they book more blondes, but this is simultaneously better and worse than that. I don't 'get' the appeal of deathmatch promotions. I'm OK with watching bloody matches, but a whole card full of them just trying to outdo each other? Not my thing. Current ROH doesn't really appeal to me either. The writing is kinda bland, I have no reason to care about much of the roster, and, well...I just plain hate the Briscoes.

I saw the letter in my Cheesecake Man search the other day, I went to the SHIMMER Forum to try and find it today and one of the SHIMMER fans from this board must of told them that we were sharing stuff on this board because you now need to sign up for a forum account to even read the message board which is a shame because the letter was really really funny.

The Shimmer forum lockdown has always been a regular occurence : every once in a while, Prazak locks the forum down for non-registered members, only to unlock it a few weeks later, and so on, for no real reason. That said, that was true before the last proboards update, but now that they've updated, maybe the forum will stay forbidden for guests from now on... ?

I hate Chikara with a passion. Like if the Wrestling Gods gave me the power to eradicate one promotion on the planet I'd pick Chikara in a heartbeat. I'd rather watch CHIKARA, which is about fun, then watch a bell-end like Davey Richards no-sell 300 tombstone piledrivers and 500 Lyger Bombs! I wouldn't give a crap if ROH folded to be honest, It sucks

That was hilarious, I've actually got an account on the Shimmer forums, they don't get into arguements half as much as they do here, which makes it less entertaining but I would've loved to see a reaction off every single Shimmer wrestler, from Melissa to Danger to Portia Perez, all gathered around the letter before all bursting out into hysterical laughter (It's an amusing visual image)

That guy clearly hasn't ever watched SHIMMER. It's 250 people, a lot of women, a lot of great guys who all respect the product, have fun, and some of them have become good friends with each other. It's a community. Though there are some bad eggs in there, including "Cheesecake Man", but they're very much the minority. My personal answer is NOAH. Their days are clearly way past them. BURNING saw the light, hopefully several others will prompt either a sale, or someone like All Japan swallowing the company up. Then again, not many are exactly hyping them up these days. Calling someone a liar because they don't like something. Great debate skills, I tell you what.

Where on earth did I say that guy was a liar? I was just thinking he went based on what he had heard, rather than what he may have seen. That's a different thing entirely. He may just have been misinformed.
And if I see anyone else using a roll-eye gif on me, especially with only 13 posts...

And if I see anyone else using a roll-eye gif on me, especially with only 13 posts... You'll ignore it and keep being weird? That guy clearly hasn't ever watched SHIMMER. It's 250 people, a lot of women, a lot of great guys who all respect the product, have fun, and some of them have become good friends with each other. How much of that "respect" is expressed in posts like this? 2009 Matthews was a hottie, and it only got hotter from there...

I don't know how much "hype" they get, but I never understood or was a fan of Inter Species Wrestling (ISW)
Maybe their product just isn't for me. I find the guy running it (RotchyKong, don't know his real name) to be a douchebag and their ideas and events are just random and all over the map.

When I think SHIMMER, I think of an audience comprised of the same types of people who confessed their undying love for Mickie James a few years back. The same ones who gave her farewell threads when she fired in 2010, ones that hilariously were replicated following. I also think of the Portia Perez pics and.gifs thread.
So when I think SHIMMER, I picture those types of fans. I'm sure the.wrestling is crisp, but I just can't.get myself to care.

I've been to three Shimmer weekend tapings, but I have never attended the after parties so I can't even comment on what goes on with fans there. I didn't even go to the merch tables during intermissions where you interact with the performers, so can't really comment on that either. I appreciate what the wrestlers do, but I just don't have any desire to chat with them or be haggled into buying them drinks or their merchandise. But with the fans that I've met at shows and chat with were always cool and mentally sound to me. Maybe I wasn't sitting near where the creepers usually sit at the shows.
