Which is why these Claude Julian saved his job conversations are baffling. You never fire a good coach unless Scotty Bowman wants to be the head coach and will do it for free Had they blown the 3-1 lead to Toronto, I would have understood management putting some pressure on him. But for everyone screaming for him to be fired for a chunk of the season, I always asked them who would be better/more successful with this team? I did hear Lindy Ruff and Bruce Boudreu's names tossed out there, which was funny given that neither guy has won anything. You can dislike some of his decisions (at times, I do), you can get frustrated with his defense first system (occasionally I do), but you can't argue with his overall record: A Stanley cup, 2 ECF appearances and 6 straight years of playoff births in a very competitve NHL. Yeah but if the team did blow it against Toronto that's more of the blame on the players and sends a message to them it's not your fault but the coaches fault. Granted most players are smart to know its usually their fault and say so whenever a good coach or a coach they like get fired. I'm just tired management always shifts the blame to the coach when usually they are more at fault. Now watch Slats replace former Jack Adams trophy winner Torts with never coached a game before Messier (who will most likely have the same coaching fate as Bryan Trottier another Slats hire) or can't coach Gretzky

Question- should the Penguins consider going after any of the goalies I mentioned for Edmonton this offseason?
Ray Emery in Pittsburgh might not be a bad idea

@proteautype: NHL agrees to mandate visors, test hybrid icing and use shallower nets next season. I like this new competition committee already.
@darrendreger: Players who have played 26 or more NHL regular season or playoff games will not have to wear a visor under grandfather agreement.

FINALLY!!! Seriously it's not a foreign concept since only the professional levels of hockey are the only leagues that don't enforce visors. So it's not like a new concept for players! Unocal yeah if I was the Pens one of my number one priorities would be either extending Vokun or getting Emery. I wouldn't pay full blown money for another starter until after next season or in the middle of the season. Fleury may rebound next season and he has two more years left in his contract. The last thing you need is overpaying on a goalie and can't get rid of him when he busts and have to wait him out. One more goalie I suggest Pittsburgh to look at is Anton Khudobin . I think Management needs to put pressure on finding a hungry young backup or a career backup who thinks he's a starter to pressure Fleury to keep the starting job. The last thing a player wants to do is underperform in his contract year.

Oh god I lost even more faith in Kevin Lowe. There is a report that Mark Messier was the first choice to become the Oilers headcoach last year. Sure he's probably one of the greatest captains in NHL history and possibly the most intense player in NHL but he has no coaching history. At least Roy has six years of coaching experience and coached a Memorial Cup winning team. Great players with no coaching experience bomb! Like Gretzky and Trottier bombed

Trottier had been Avs assistant coach for 4 years.
He'd have been better off as the guy who replaced Bob Hartley in Colorado- surely, he'd have fared better than Tony 'My win-loss record is the product of a loaded team' Granato?

Yeah but he still was never a head coach anywhere else or a assistant coach for a long time compared to other assistants who finally got their big break years later. Plus he was a assistant coach on a loaded team just like how Bob Hartley was the head coach in a loaded team

Love the visor rule. It should have been put in place years ago but I'm just glad it finally got done. Especially after watching Marc Staal's eye injury. That was brutal.

Not saying Trottier would have been a coaching god in Colorado, but he'd have been better off as 'Coach of a team he had some familiarity with' than going to coach a team whose fans hated his guts.
Avs fans would have accepted him; Rangers fans NEVER accepted him.

Supersweet, how much confident would you be in Edmonton if they went with an Emery/Dubnyk goalie rotations?
(I think Chicago's gonna let him walk)

(I think Chicago's gonna let him walk) Anything is better then having Khabibulin as your backup and Emery has always been a good backup and not much of a starter. Plus he played well the last three seasons. Plus it may make Dubnyk better to have someone good to challenge him for the #1 spot rather then Delaurires or Khabibulin. I'm still pissed they didn't make Gerber the #2 goalie when they had him one season even when he played great in those two games in 2010-2011 and was great in the AHL. But yeah the top 3 UFA's Edmonton should acquire this offseason is Mark Streit, Bryan Bickell, and Ray Emery
