No it isn't. At least it hasn't been since the mid Sixties. It certainly wasn't as defining as the Waynes are to Batman, so that's apples and oranges. It played a role in the origin and put him in the suit, sure, no arguing that; but beyond that, outside of the occasional plot device or lip service dialogue paid to it in the intervening few years before he no longer had the shrapnel in his heart, it wasn't what motivated him. And again, even if it had been, it hasn't been in over forty years.

Myself, I'm not too bummed about Hank Pym not being in because the only time I ever gave a crap about him was in Earth's Mightiest Heroes. That's about it.

That's the same time flash crap he's peddled before.
That isn't Hank Pym and, as he's probably my favourite Earth based character, I am still super pissed at his treatment here.
F*** Edgar Wright. And possibly Whedon too.
I'll still see their films. But I'll bitch about Pym throughout.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes is actually the one thing that made me really want to see Pym in the Cinematic Universe. If a kids cartoon can make him that compelling, then he should get a sincere go in live-action.

Ant-Man isn't, Hank Pym is. I like that he has mental health issues but still tries, I've enjoyed most of his redeeming stories, I like how he takes responsibility for things now, which fits with his long history and I like how he's an under dog and how no one likes him much because of 'the slap' despite many having never ever read that arc. I'm more of a cosmic fan in general, but Hank Pym.....I dunno, just always really liked the guy

Hank Pym is awesome, and leaving him out of Avengers 2 when Ultron is the bad guy blows.
And, yeah, the slap thing is a lot less damaging if you've actually read everything that happened leading up to it.

I always feel bad for the guy. he's basically the Avengers equivalent of Meg Griffin. writers often hate him and have everyone treat him like crap and it just makes me feel bad for him. plus on top of that I think his power set is really cool and he's like Reed Richards if he wasn't a condescending dick.

Yeah the part that made him look like a bigger jerk was when he was like "oh yeah, that was a skrull" at the end of secret invasion even though he was never replaced with a skrull.

More robots for marvel heroes to destroy "yay?", I'm less excited especially as Ultron as a personality is zero, sure he is a threat but i find him kind of dull.
(Iron Man villains, The chitari and the Destroyer have made me rather tired of seeing shiny metal things be the antagonists in marvel films)

I sincerely hope Whedon is just trolling us and he includes Pym in Avengers 2.
But when you really think about it and lay the cards on the table. Pym, as far as the film timeline is concerned, should've been introduced in Iron Man 2 or 3 that way his character, intellect, and creativity could've been showcased that way when Ultron is created it adds more of the tragic aspect to his character.

At the very least he should've had a cameo as a person attending that conference of scientists in Iron Man 3. Would've at least told us how smart he was.

Isn't Quicksilver apart of the 'X-Men' canon though? Do Marvel have the rights to use him in a movie? Apologies for being apparently WAY out of the loop here...... So ive read through this entire thread looking for an explanation. What does it matter what canon they are in? Its all in the Marvel universe right? Why cant Magneto be referenced? Why cant the siblings be referred to as mutants? How can Marvel Studios not have rights to Marvel characters?

Because they sold those film rights to other companies back when they weren't making movies themselves.

Either way I hope Whedon is just trolling and intends on including him. It will feel very wrong to have Ultron and not have Pym in the picture. If they went with the route of Stark being the sole creator of Ultron I will literally shake my head in disgust.
