The Seven remaining Contestants found themselves at Jackrabbit Slims after a particularly grueling Round 23. Soaking in the retro neon ambiance, the ginchest tunes comin' out of the ol' jukebox, watching the hep cats and kittens dance on the Bunny Bop dance floor, the Would-be Idol hopefuls killed time before Round 24 would get under way. It took all of five seconds for Spiderfab4 to find himself doing the Tarantula among the FAN Mushroom People (slang for people who stay out late to dance and play), teaching them all his way-out dance steps, including the Web, the Dime Climb, and Mr. 8-legs. He started to mosh a bit, which was like trying to tell them kids to get down in Martian but they all started to understand his righteous ways after a bit and started to bounce off each other. Moonie played a bit of Van Morrison in the corner on his wiggy acoustic guitar, causing the Fanners to slow dance a bit, then really went cosmic with his intergalactic inspired psychedelic songs, including Sea of Tranquility, Chorus of Comets, and Star Faith. fw91 went out into the parking lot with some of the dudes and dudettes to play some good old, American Pie Baseball; he had his patented Jelly Roll change up really making them kids see stars but a stray pepper ball broke the window of a real Hopped-Up Cadillac. Z-A Sandbaggin' Son of a b!% h didn't appreciate his real cherry Caddy, known far and wide as the Beach Creature, getting all busted but cooler heads prevailed and the former FAN Idol showed them kids how to go deep, knocking pitch after pitch into the stratosphere and tearing ass around the parking lot. Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch, Jazzman was going mongo with the bongos at the Jackrabbit Slims Center Stage-O-Rama, covering Jack Constanzo's Somos Cubano and Oh Carolina by Count Ossie. Bop-Bop-Bop the bongos went, filling the diner with Afro-Caribbean love that wigged-out the rather Middle American audience; drinking iced coffee and coconut milk, the Jazzman continued his set with Street Spartan accompanying him with some Real Gone electric guitar playin' and beat box work. Street Spartan got a few numbers from some of Paper Shakers (cheerleaders) in the audience but, since he's ever the gentlemen and not one to go in with fast girls, his only intention was to share some Jack Rabbit Onion Rings and a Bunny-Malt while he planned for the next Round of competition. Jazzman raised some real heck and Street Spartan had to fight off the local Dennis Stamp High School football team who thought he was after their girls. He wasn't, well not after all of them, but how could you explain that to guys like Alex Riley? As it was, his unique fighting style, one of glacial slowness and awkward steps, through those jocks for a loop and several of them had to go to The Big Game with black eyes and sore hands from trying to punch the Spartan. He always could fight well in the shade. "C'mon, c'mon, you stupid machine, light up that ring already!" Canctus Fraggle yelled at the pinball machine, Madison Square Garden written in baroque lettering on the screen, trying to sink in enough metal balls in order to get the little wrestler figure to "Hulk Up" so he could go to the next wacky stage. Canctus was going ape on that poor machine and finally gave up when the little wrestler was knocked down and pinned by another figure. That machine was cruisin' for a bruising from Canctus but wadefan22 saved its hide by getting Canctus to go in with her on some real Radioactive Jacky Fries, some delicious french fries with gravy and jalapeno peppers. "I mean, you gotta chill, my friend. You know. Zen. Zen it out. You can't fly if you got all that weight on your back. Last tour I was on, my manager forgot to get me the Booker T slushie cup for my backstage room. I mean, c'mon, right? But they ran out, so I was like: wadefan, you're young, the kids love you, you're rich and people want to know who I wear when I step out on the carpet. And, I'm like, I don't know but whoever it is better know my name! You dig, Canctus? You got to play that game like all games and don't let it get ya down!" Knalsic Loves to Boogie and Stinger4Christ were chatting it up with some of Jackrabbit Slim's wait staff who famously dressed up as some of Professional Wrestling's most iconic performers and talk drifted onto employment. A statuesque blonde dressed up as Showstopper Era Shawn Michaels told the two formidable competitors about what the job entailed: "Sometimes, I make a pun about the Kliq or tuning up the band. Do a little stomp on the ground, start twirling, do a knip-up, those sorts of things." "Don't you mean kip-up?" asked Knalsic Loves to Boogie, dressed up in his finest Disco Inferno costume, with enough sequins to blind the current, light-brit jacket wearing version of Chris Jericho. The female HBK said that she wasn't sure, that it was differently in the manual that Slim gave her, though that manual was also a bit shady about her 401K plan. "Oh, you should see what the FAN Idol rules say!" laughed Stinger4Christ, sporting a Red, White, and Blue Stinger costume with full make-up and neon pants so blue that he practically glowed. "We're making the Freakin' Awesome Network so much money, it's ridiculous. I wish I had a cut on the Stinger4Christ Doll. Hell, Knalsic's doll here does a little boogie and has a chip that plays some classic rock from a little boom-box he's holding. Mine doesn't even bend all the way!" To which Knalsic replied, "Well, buddy, some of us got the Boogie and some of us don't." Ssnakebite, the Number 1 Frenchman, entertained a lady friend with his stories about his time spent during the FAN War. "Zee Ssseassson, it wassss not good for usss French, especially for Za Sssnakesss. Merde! How long we spent under the ground! Why it wassss, how you say, Hellsss on Earth? SSShow me a Frenchman who can't remember zee sssongs we sssung to passss the time? Zee Idol, ssshe wasss in my thoughtsss at the time. How to win, how to sssay be victoriousss? I am French. I am Ssssnake and, Mon Dieu, sssuch is musssic. Jean Paul Sssartre. Jean Luc Godard. Thessse were on my mind when I played thisss Ssseason. Thessse men, yesss, and Triumph!!!" He smoked a big cigar, ate a mouse salad, his forked tongue gainfully used, and read a newspaper (after ignoring his lady friend in the french way), the front page of which declared: "FAN Idol Superstar, Cageking: King of Wrestlemania? Cageking to play Brodus Clay to the Ring: Meanwhile, back in the parking lot, Anonymous Gm and Roxie Daggers were about to settle their score from Last Round in the only way two battle-hardened Fan Idol warriors know how: Drag Racing. Anonymous GM: My dear friend, are you sure that you want to do this? I realize that you may be a bit... disappointed in Last Round's outcome but you shan't be too upset. No need to risk life and limb in with such dangerous and fast machines! Roxie Daggers: That's just the way I play, honey! We go fast or we don't go at all! So, rev up, release the clutch and let's leave it up to the blacktop! Anonymous GM: Sigh. Well, these are rather fetching leather jackets. Banjo would never leave us alone if he saw such winning accoutrements. Fancy gloves as well. Roxie Daggers (running a hand through her hair and playing around with a knife): We really need to be on the same side next time. You and Me, peeling rubber, watching the smoke rise, then we can throw down for the... trophy, right? It's a trophy, didn't Tyger say? Anonymous GM: I believe some sort of medal. Perhaps a diadem. Roxie Daggers: Dia-what? Anonymous GM: Pretentious word for a crown. (Revs up the engine) Oh dear, no turning back is there? Roxie Daggers: Nope, time to fly. And then they were off, the wind, the dirt, the roar of the engine. Now that's real music. After all was said and done, the Host received these songs for Round 24: The Double Dip. He received some troubling news about Square making his escape and heading out to Jack Rabbit Slims but, eh, it happened before, it was bound to happen again. Probably just wanted back into the Season. Contestants, as the Judges are hard at work on ranking Round 24, we ask each of you for the following:
Please pm me a list of three bands or solo artists, from any genre or time period, not featured in the Double Dip Round. They can either be new to the competition or used in a past Round but they cannot have been chosen for the Double Dip Round.
Like any Round, contestants will be asked to choose a different artist if someone else has listed them before, so I suggest having back up artists. You do not need to include any tracks and you can use whatever reasoning you want in your decisions. I'm not going to approve in the pm because, really, the only criteria for the artists is not being in the Double Dip.
Thank you.

Indeed. I have 5 out of 7 lists but we have some time yet for those. I have one set of rankings; I'm waiting on the judges for Round 24 but, since it's a holiday, please give them time.

I have 6 of 7 lists of artists in. There may be a bit of a slowdown with judging this weekend, do to work, holiday related stuff, and so on, so I'll reveal Round 25's theme, which will be held after the Elimination Sing-off. This Round is essentially my replacement for one of my favorite Rounds from Season 6 and 7 which, while awesome, needed to sit out this Season, namely The Captain Planet Challenge, where Contestants had to select a song based off the elements Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart (Go Planet!). This time, instead of something heroic, we are going to a rather sinister place: The Seven Deadly Sins"SOMERSET: "Dear Detectives, Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light." It's the murderer's way of announcing himself. CAPTAIN: Announcing what? SOMERSET: There are seven deadly sins. Gluttony, wrath, greed, envy, sloth, pride and lust. Seven."- David Fincher's Seven Choose 2 songs that reference one of the classic Seven Deadly Sins- Envy, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Pride, Sloth, and Wrath. The song can either directly reference one of the sins, such as a song about Greed or Wraith, or reference something associated with a particular sin, such as a song about looking pretty (Pride) or about wanting to have sex (Lust). A link that explains the sins in a bit of detail: www.deadlysins.com/sins/You can send me the songs now or wait until Round 24 and the Elimination Sing-Off concludes.

Note, not that it necessarily will come up but I'm going to say drunkenness ties in with gluttony. So, songs about drinking and alcohol are acceptable for that Sin. I would also accept something like a song talking about how famous a person is or wants to become to fall under pride. There are quite a few ways to approach the category and you can always ask me if something is acceptable.

However, if you wanted to use a song about drug use or that mentions drugs, you might be able to match it to one of the other sins, like wrath or sloth, etc.

J.Slim: Here ya'll go, Fan Idols and Fan Idolettes! Some of our good ol' fashioned, rev up your engine Jackrabbit "Make like a tree and Split!" Banana Splits, free for you and $10.99 each for the Freakin' Awesome Network! Now, mosey on up here, dig on in, and taste the hippest ice cream in the good ol' US o' A! KingOrangeTyger: I believe, per our agreement, Mr. Slim, that all Jackrabbit Slim food and paraphernalia are free to our contestants in return for the advertising our competition provides for your fine establishment. J.Slim: Oh, now you big ol' Tyger, don't get your tail in a bunch! Of course all this here primo, out of the world stuff is free for those fine young men and women. A cagey sonofagun, like yourself, knows that ain't nothing in this here life is free. Some G-Man hepcat, like yourself, is gonna half to pay. Oh and here's your Slim Soda Pop, Chocolate flavor: KingOrangeTyger: (Pulling out a FAN issued credit card with a hologram of Fake Razor and Fake Diesel on it): Grumble, grumble. Fine, here's your money. (looks at a Pink Cadillac on display in the dining room, WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Hart's face on a large decal on the car's hood) It's not the '50s anymore, Jack! J.Slim: (Big smile on his face, taking the credit card and swiping it) Nope, golly no, but we can pretend. I mean, dig it, if you can wear a Tiger suit... KingOrangeTyger: It's not a Tiger Suit!!! Sigh. (Sips on soda and waits for the judges) The judges, dressed as greasy bikers and one bobby sox wearing girl who hangs out with greasy bikers, returned from commiserating inside a stretch limo in the parking lot and gave the Host a vinyl record that he promptly played in Jackrabbit Slim's Jukebox, the results as follows: KingOrangeTyger: Contestants, we are a little bit past the half way point for Season VIII of FAN Idol. In perhaps the most taxing Round yet, you were asked to plumb the depths of your musical knowledge, recollect the songs that you and your former competitors had the ingenuity to bring to the competition, and send forth your songs for Round 24: The Double Dip. There are Seven in your number now, all fierce and resourceful, and, after this Round, there will only be six. The Season will continue to become more difficult as we progress forward. However, let us not look too far into the future. Let's focus on the here and now. The winner of Round 24, scoring a jaw-dropping 190 points, is a contestant who has reestablished their spot in FAN Idol as a fierce competitor who may go all the way. This contestant will receive the option of sending an Additional Song for Round 25: The Seven Deadly Sins. Please, give a round of applause for... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Sloth Spartan!!! Who wowed the judges with Walk off the Earth's sweet rendition of Madonna's Material Girl, Macklemore's smooth flowing Otherside, and Rob Zombie's staggering, ghoulish love ballad Living Dead Girl!!! Congratulations on winning such a difficult Round!!!
In second place, just three points shy off a tie for first, with 187 phenomenal points, is a contestant who has maintained a high level of play throughout the competition. I've got a feeling we'll see a whole more from... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Stinger4Christ!!! who showed us a darker side of country living with Johnny Cash's Cocaine Blues, left us with a smile on our faces with I've got a Feeling by The Beatles, and referenced the Fab Four and the notorious Yoko Ono in the Canadian alt folk rock of the Barenaked Ladies Be My Yoko Ono!!!
Rounding out the top three with 183 points, just four points short of a tie with second, is a contestant that has shown a dominant side as of late. Tough and feisty, this contestant has nothing to fear as we move on... {Spoiler}{Spoiler}Roxie Daggers!!! who scored big with David Bowie's and Trent Reznor's industrial treatment of Bowie's paranoid classic "I'm Afraid of Americans", hit the roads hard with Road Trippin' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and gave us all something to be patriotic about this holiday season with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' American Girl!!! Sweeping in an impressive 175 points and taking home 4th place is a contestant who has been up and down all Season long but always to pull through when it's clutch time. Buckle down because this contestant isn't going anywhere anytime soon... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Anonymous GM!!! who showed just how human she is with Marina and the Diamonds' I Am Not a Robot, soothed our fears about this tough Round with Matt & Kim's It's Alright, and is one step closer to the finals with Tegan and Sara's Closer!!!
fw91. Knalsic loves to Boogie. Spiderfab4. Please step forward. Looking at your competitors, it's safe to say that FAN Idol is getting closer and closer to the Finale. Only six contestants, a fraction of the original seventeen talented Fan members that we started with, will move on to Round 25: The Seven Deadly Sins. Scoring 171 points and joining the five contestants that are already guaranteed a spot in the next Round is... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} fw91!!! who found the opportune moment to bring us the Foo Fighters' Times Like These (Live at the Central Park Global Citizens Festival 9/12), while adding some weight to the competition with Social Distortion's Ball and Chain and reminding us about our delightful forum's original purpose with Bruce Springsteen's The Wrestler!!!
Knalsic loves to Boogie scored 135 points with Janis Joplin's bluesy The Last Time, T.Rex's aggressive Rock On and George Harrison's post-Beatle I'd Have You Anytime!!!
while Spiderfab scored took home 105 points with Alt.folk/hip-hop mash-up artist Beck's Nausea, the video game Katamari Damacy's frantic Lonely Rolling Star, and Metal Archduke Ozzy Osbourne's Let Me Hear You Scream!!!
Good luck in the Elimination Sing-Off gentlemen!!! Give us one to remember!

It’s the round I’ve looked forward to the most. You did not disappoint. Thanks so much, contestants. I love how we mixed different decades of music and styles of music. Your judges won’t be universal in their judgments, I predict, and that’s a testament to how great and difficult you’ve all made it. Gosh, I love this game for precisely the reasons on display in this round. Thanks again, crew! Awesome job!
Be My Yoko Ono- BarenakedLadies
Several things here. Musicianship, like many Barenakedladies songs before it, is second to none. Really talented musicians at work here. Lyrically, there is some clever stuff going on here too. The video is a saving grace as well: some good music video-making right there and opening choreography had me right in the middle of the vibe of the song. The vocals are right down main street barenakedladies territory. This is the band I remember first hearing before their plunge into American mainstream. On the flipside, I know I want to hate the novelty aspect of the song. Because of that, it does feel like more than a 3-minute song, because the “newness” of the concept sinks in and maybe flounders a bit about 1 minute and a half into the song. But, that’s the band for you. They were such a comedic act when first starting with hecka good musicianship to back it up. All in all, you went with a strong all-around band, and you did quite well, I would say. -------------------------------------------------------------- I’ve Got a Feeling- The Beatles
Gotta love how this pick follows the Barenakedladies selection above. I like this groove from The Beatles. Like so many pieces from the group, it’s a song that just emotes so well. It’s a feeling piece. Yeah, I know, that’s a cheap explanation and it goes right back to the title, but as “ok” as the lyrics might be, The Beatles seem to nail down songs like this with something songs do better than words in conversation. Everybody had a wet dream indeed. (Gosh, I hope people are familiar with the song before reading that comment.) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Nausea- Beck
Gosh, I’m so grateful that someone went back to the well with this artist. I can listen to this song and watch this video, and my comments from the earlier round about that particular Beck song can almost be echoed. This creature, this strange thing they call Beck is just something that I can’t turn away from. No way I can figure out what all is going on here, nor do I want to. The phenomenon that is this song is almost cult-like in its impression on listeners. I mean, some won’t get it, sure, but there is some unique stylings going on here that is just screaming for someone to latch onto it. And it’s not even that it’s “good” in the classic sense of the word. It’s just freaking appealing to me. Ok, you know what it is: it’s just funky. Forget the hype. That’s funk, I don’t care who wants to argue with me. That bass, those percussion uses! It’s freaking funky! That video is astounding and the song draws me in right there with it. The samples, the unique vibe of the piece, the charisma in the vocals (and the charisma of the video) are all just music gold. I also like that this track from later in his career shows Beck didn’t deviate too much from what made him so awesome in the 90s. The guy’s underrated, I feel. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Wrestler- Bruce Springsteen
Well, that’s a cool pick. A song less likely, yet fitting. And when you think of Springsteen’s monster library of songs, this is not the obvious one. That’s worthy of a pat on the back right there. Nicely played. Gosh, it’s an emotionally packed song. Love the understatement, which is so necessary to the theme of the lyrics. It’s subdued and knows how to deliver as far as forwarding the message of the song. Way to bring down the competition, contestant. And no, I don’t mean in a points scoring kind of way. You’re an emotional buzzkill. (Here’s an ovation though; well-played, like I said.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ I’m Afraid of Americans - David Bowie feat. Trent Reznor
I love this freaking song! I think the rhythms are unheard of. It doesn’t feel like Bowie musically, but the vocals are distinguishably him. I thought it was a pretty revolutionary track from him the first time I heard it, and it still feels pretty cutting edge. Just a few songs in, and this round is delivering in all the right ways. Going to be one of those impossible rounds to judge, just the way I like it. Shout out to the simplicity in the two-note keyboard phrases during the song “lulls” that have an allure that is inexplicable. Really contributes to the creepy mood of the piece. Deserves multiple listens if you’re a first time listener to this track. It’s brilliant. (Great 4th of July timing too. I got a kick out of that.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Times Like These - Foo Fighters
How am I supposed to judge this round? Or this song? It’s rock music perfection. That’s what it is. Those lyrics! That control over the song! That freaking rock out prowess! This band is one big predator and it just devours music. I would like to interview this band one time just for one question. How does it feel to be the best at what you do? I mean, thousands of acts, thousands of acts who are legit good. How does it feel to be the top rung of the ladder in today’s time? The Foo Fighters show they know their song here and they know rock music. No one in the game does it better. The track itself is obviously an upper tier track and will be deserving of a number one slot 9 times out of 10. There is just a dog fight going on, and I’ve got to balance out how I divvy up rewards in the rankings. Excellent choice though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I’d Have You Anytime- George Harrison
Like some of Harrison’s tracks, this song is a little sleepy to me. I know the guy has talent; that talent just isn’t for everyone. I think the piece is a little bit lacking that others have delivered on. Not that there’s a template for what “good” is, but the vocals and lyrics don’t pack the punch for me that the others do. The best comparative description is just that it’s a little on the sleepy side. If you’re going subdued (see also Springsteen) then it’s got to do more than what’s going on here. Springsteen nailed the subdued side of the song. It delivers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Last Time- Janis Joplin
Good grief! Those vocals! So catchy and soulful! And it’s on the creepy side of prophetic if you take those lyrics a certain way. A haunting song. A hurtful song. A groovy song. An emphatic song. All that wrapped up into the stylings of the vocalist. It’s like you don’t even hear the accompanying music when she is doing her thing in a song like this. It’s a home run. And then listening to the accompaninment and man it’s perfect on occasion for what’s going on vocally. Underrated track right here. After thinking it through, this one is likely to get a bump up in the rankings when all is said and done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cocaine Blues- Johnny Cash
That’s how you tell a story! Wonderful play off of the refrain! I mean, textbook use of repetition for maximum effectiveness. Keeps listeners on the edge of their seats, even when they’ve heard it before. The locomotive background music supplies the engine to keep the lyrical vehicle going. And, of course, the vocals are unmistakably Johnny. Cash OWNS this song inside and out. NO ONE could cover this song and do a better job of delivering it. I think that’s a great measurement of how effective a song is. No one could improve upon what Cash does here. It’s his song and he just masters it for its intended effect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lonely Rolling Star- Katamari Damacy
Perhaps in no other round other than the Finals or the round before the Finals are the stakes higher than in the Double Dip round. I mean, for me as a judge, I have such huge expectations in this round that it’s virtually impossible to say a Double Dip round could exceed expectations I have. With that being said, that means there is room for disappointment since every song is just expected to be a winner. Countless song choices, and it causes a bit of a head shake to think that out of every pick we’ve seen thus far in the game (by the way, this is the LARGEST song library for a double dip round we’ve ever had to choose from) that Katamari Damacy is the go-to selection. That just baffles me, and it’s definitely not the makings of what I think of a FAN Idol Champion is. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Otherside- Macklemore
This act is interesting to me. Because I’m still not sure where I stand on it. It is just at that interesting stage for me. I thoroughly enjoy it, but I could just see me getting more and more attached with each listen to Macklemore. I know the work, but I’m just not all that exposed to it often enough. I could see me having some real regrets in future seasons for having underscored/underranked both picks from Ryan Lewis this season. The only thing holding the pick back is my value of others that are ranked over it. Not a thing wrong here. Some just have to be ranked higher than others, and like I said, I’m at least acknowledging I could really have some retrospective rethinking of where I’ve ranked this by the time later seasons roll around. That intro is heavenly. It’s a little bit formulaic in how some of those ballad rap songs go, but it’s a refreshing take on the formula. I think that may explain a little of my hesitation, because it feels like it’s notched at times. But at the same time, it’s going down different avenues than others in the major market hip hop scene. I love that. It’s a lot easier to listen to than watch as well. I really really dig this, and I apologize in advance if this becomes an act 3-5 years down the row that I realize I didn’t appreciate as much as I should. Gosh, it’s really pretty smart. I’m torn big time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I Am Not a Robot- Marina and the Diamonds
I thoroughly love this pick. I could take much of what I just wrote about Macklemore and apply it here. There are simply picks that outrank this one, but it’s not taking away from the fact that I want to hear this song over and over again. Love the range on display here vocally. The variation in rhythms hooks me enough to keep me listening and enjoying the song in segments, take it or leave it. If I had one complaint, I would say that the lyrics don’t measure up for me the way the rest of the elements of the song do. The vocals carry it for sure, but the overall package makes me think “just dial it back a notch.” Love quirky, but this song’s a little too reaching in that quirky side. It’s like it’s fishing for hip on occasion. Wish I had a little more to match what hook is going on elsewhere in the song. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- It’s Alright- Matt & Kim
Love it! So bouncy and fun. I can’t not sing along to this. Also, there are only four words to describe that video: Best. Night terrors. Ever. There are a million descriptions that can go into why a masterful song is masterful, but one of the things I love about this is that there is minimalist fun going on, and they don’t need an orchestra and 50 different instruments and such to keep the flavor going. I love what the duo does with their music, especially in this song. It has a very distinct goal and doesn’t deviate from it. A masterful display of “keep it simple, stupid.” Great choice. And I would even say it’s a bold choice at that. Good job going with your gut here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let Me Hear You Scream- Ozzy Osbourne
Loving the raw kick-buttery here in the song. I really get behind the adrenaline and no holds barred approach. There have been picks in the genre before in the game, but this—unlike some—feels rock and bleeds rock. It IS rock. Ozzy owns the song here, and gets away with all the lyrical liberties that the genre sometimes takes. Here is a case of a song that may fall short just due to the nature of game in that this category is loaded with good picks. Thanks for this though. I really liked that you brought this song in particular to the table. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Road Trippin’- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Glad you choose the pristine nature of the album version of this song. An underrated song on the album, and has all of the allure of RHCP great songs. It’s that delicate vocal that can be backed up by the fluttering strings, yet you feel that a harnessed breakout could occur at any time. It’s a little hypnotic to tell ya the truth. I really appreciate your fandom for this band and introducing a pick less likely to the competition. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Living Dead Girl- Rob Zombie
YES! YES! YES! I love this crap! Thanks for being bold enough to go back to the Rob Zombie well. I feel it’s a bit risky, but it’s a risk that pays off. How freaking good of a ring entrance for a female is this?! (I think Shelly Martinez used it, but seriously, it could be rebooted and be a perfect theme for the right gimmick.) I mark hard for this selection. That industrial grit mixed with psychotic thumping rock! That’s a neapolitan nightmare of a song flavor. Also, love the beat between the final word in the lyrical phrasing at times. It gives yet another psychotic/imbalanced feel that contributes mightily to the mood of the piece. And the samples for the song that are intermingled couldn’t be any more perfect. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ball and Chain- Social Distortion
A great 90s alt rock staple here. I may have been the only one that didn’t get fully behind the original pick, but I’d say you made a right decision in going back to the well here, because I think this is the group’s best song. I may again hold the selector back from a ranking as high as they would like, but I’m telling you, I really really dig this piece. The vocals are deliciously 90s to me. Fully behind the pick, and only reason for a lower ranking is just because of the effect those others had on me above it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rock On- T. Rex
I freaking love this. Most of my ramblings here are confined mostly to why I don’t have this song ranked higher. I’m looking at the list of already ranked songs and it’s frustrating not to have this ranked higher. I know I could say that about a great number of songs this round, but it’s again true. This is a pick less likely, and I want to reward it so badly. I love that vocal, so sultry and controlling at the same time. I don’t have a choice but to “rock on.” I’m typically not a glam rock guy, but this is the genre done right. Well done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Closer - Tegan and Sara
Marking the heck out! One of my favorite songs of this duo, IF NOT my favorite!(It really is their best song; there I said it.) I never thought this song would hit the competition. Behind Mary Chapin Carpenter earlier in the game, this may be my 2nd highest markout moment of the game so far. Just because I never thought this song would hit the playlist in the competition. Wow! I love you for this! It has a bounce that I cannot shake out of my head. And the vocal crispness of some of their syllables are so so so unique. It’s not words—I mean, it’s literally some syllables in particular that stand out. It’s full of vocal subtleties. That “chang-ING overhead” vocal jump rope move is the perfect segue into the emphatic chorus too! It’s just a well freaking balanced song that messes around a lot with syllable play. It can be alt or pop or whatever the heck you want to categorize it as. Why is this song not played on the radio all the time?! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- American Girl- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Gosh, another great song in a great round. Negative associations I have with the song is that it seems like I’ve heard this at reality singing show auditions galore and it really deflates the song for me sometimes. I love the jagged phrasings the intro the chorus. Otherwise throwaway lines, they really have that rapid fire lead-in that’s needed for that long draw out “Amerrrriiiicaaan” part. Said this about Johnny Cash too, but that vocal in this song in undeniably Tom Petty. No one should try doing this song. It’s his and cannot be improved upon. Maybe Talking Heads could attempt it and pull something off with it. But no, no one else is in the ball park of this style, vocally and musically. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Material Girl- Walk off the Earth
How does this video not have 50 million views? This group is AWESOME! What a video! You’re going to get high marks from me, but you would have gotten even higher with the original song. Love that freaking song—probably Madonna’s best (maybe, probably, could be). Anyway, the band does it justice , and I mark hard for the creative flavor they throw into it. Sometimes the vocals shy away from being what the original brings to the table fun-wise, but the band is doing their darndest to make up for it with the musical selections. And again, my oh my at that video. Well done. Bringing the big stuff to the table when it’s needed most. Keep going! The high ranking is solely on the fun factor because—I’m going to be honest—the vocals leave something to be desired in most all of their music. I have a feeling this could be a regrettable placement on my part (ranking them too high) but they’ve got that sudden “wow, that’s cool” factor going, and I’m afraid I’m having a reactionary inflated ranking to them. Big thumbs up though.

That looks awesome, Tyger. I'm shocked I was able to win that round, but very happy. Glad to have the extra pick because everyone is bringing their A game and any advantage I can get is a godsend.
Good luck in the singoff Knalsic and Spiderfab.

Good luck to both Elimination Contestants. There was a bit of confusion, as we went straight to the Elimination Round. This was done to add a bit of a twist to the Round, raising the stakes, as was asking for three songs from each contestant and essentially giving them free rein (or enough to get themselves in trouble, depending on what they pick) to choose what they liked. Please, please read the Round rules each time and ask any questions that you have.
I have one Elimination Round pick and I now have all of the contestant's lists of artists, which will be used in a future Round. I also have almost half the songs for the Seven Deadly Sins Round, so keep sending them in.
Congratulations to Sloth Spartan for winning Round 24, and to everyone, including the Elimination Round contestants, for still being in the game at this late point in the Season.

I don't see the confusion, Tyger. Still doing a good job. All the time you put into write-ups and the timeliness of everything is so much more than people realize. If a player is too lazy to read what the moderator is writing and doesn't want to know the rules, that's on them, not you. Keep up the good work.

It's not a big deal and the Player was certainly not hostile about it or anything but I can see how it could be a bit jarring. Which, in a lot of ways, it should be.
