Elimination Sing-Off # 12 Anonymous GM vs. Sloth Spartan KingOrangeTyger: Contestants, Judges, audience members, please put your hands together for our Guest Hosts, the Wyatt Family! *The lights went out at the FAN Idol stage and the Wyatt Family slowly walked down the aisle, a sea of camera flashes and waving lighters turning the darkness into a starry sky. Bray Wyatt all but crawled to the stage, calling to the Judge's mind images of skittering toads, crawling snakes, and other creeping scaled things stepping out of the swamp for the first time. Wyatt carried a lamp that shined with a dim, almost diseased yellow light that told of drunken, desperate nights and weird, uncanny rituals. Close at hand were Wyatt's mysterious family members, Luke Harper making long, deliberate strides, a sick smile on his face, eyes shining out of his dirty beard and Erick Rowan, his steps tentative and confused, a broken lamb's mask over his broad features, an enormous child moving closer and closer to an encounter behind his understanding. Harper dragged an old rocking chair reserved for his crazed leader. KingOrangeTyger: Now Mr. Wyatt, thank you for guest hosting this Elimination Round. With your family, you've made quite an impression on the WWE Universe in the short time you have been featured on WWE Monday Night Raw. Any thoughts on what the future holds? Bray Wyatt: The future? The future's hands are empty, no matter what they would have you think otherwise. KingOrangeTyger: Very philosophical. (Brief Pause) So, tell us more about yourself and Mr. Harper and Mr. Rowan (both stock still). Bray Wyatt: When I was young, my daddy would play the guitar on his shrimp boat out in the swamp. He had one string on that guitar that was always off, one string that ruined the melody of whatever he played. But that guitar would draw the alligators, the snakes, the crows hovering from branch to branch. I am that String and (pointing to his family) these are the creatures that came to me... KingOrangeTyger: Yes, that's quite, odd of you to say. (Looks at Wyatt... something's not right). Bray Wyatt (turning to the Host): I am the Eater of Worlds and it's time to prepare my meal... The cube in the Host's pocket started to shake and a producer gave word that Miss Kidglov3s awoke from her hospital bed and asked for his presence at once but, before he could do so, the Wyatt Family announced the songs for this Elimination Sing-Off. With the last word, the Host knew that strange things were about to happen. Space Oddity - Chris Hadfield www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaOC9danxNovs. One Day- Matisyahu www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRmBChQjZPs

I'll continue the narrative after revealing the results of Elimination Sing-Off #10. Anonymous Gm. Sloth Spartan. Please step forward. Only six players remain from a starting a pool of seventeen. The fact that both of you are still part of this game after 26 grueling Rounds is a testament to your resourcefulness and musical expertise. Without the Save, we will have to say good bye to one of you at this moment. You have both won Rounds, found great success with teams, and complied two fantastic musical libraries. On a personal level, I've enjoyed talking with both of you and feel that you two have helped make this a special Season with your personalities even more than your musical selections. We've reached the point where truly anyone can win this Season. I can't imagine a stronger contestant pool than the one we have now and, as we go down to five contestants, I am at a loss to predict what will happen next. Regardless of who moves forward, you've both done a tremendous job and I hope the eliminated contestant sticks around and watches the rest of the Season unfold. We will now have to say goodbye to one of you. Anonymous GM chose Matisyahu's One Day, while Sloth Spartan brought us Chris Hadfield's take on David Bowie's Space Oddity. A majority has been reached but it was not unanimous. Earning 3 votes to 1 and thus mathematically clinching the win is... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Anonymous GM!!! It was your first time going to the Sing-Off this Season but you've come out of it even tougher than before. Congratulations!!!
Sloth Spartan, I'm sorry but you will not be Season VIII's FAN Idol. However, you should be very proud to have lasted an incredible 26 Rounds and forcing the Save to be invoked. You've done an amazing job in your first FAN Idol and I hope you continue to check out the thread and participate in future Seasons as a Player, Judge, or Host.
Everyone, please give a round of applause to Sloth Spartan!!!

Ahwell, it was bound to happen sooner or later. And there is no shame losing to a pick like that or a player like Anon. Given that I was being honest with Wadefan when I was convinced that I'd be the first one gone, I'm more than happy with how long I've lasted and all the rounds I've survived. Had a great time and definitely want to thank you Tyger for doing a great job hosting and with the writeups, thank the judges for being prompt and fair (Special thanks to Peg for the insightful and fun commentary that was a joy to read), and thank you other players for being warm and friendly. Good luck everyone, I'll still be following and be listening to whatever songs you guys end up selecting.

Eliminations suck. I can deal with past songs being used again, bad links, communication gaffs, schedule issues, anything but the Eliminations are the one thing that truly sucks about the game. It has to be done or we'd be playing forever (not that that's the worse thing imaginable) and it makes things meaningful but it sucks. So, with Sloth Spartan taking one more victory lap around the FAN stage and then going off to do his Sloth things or Spartan things or both, we are down to just 5 Contestants: Anonymous GM fw91 Knalsic Loves to Boogie Roxie Daggers Stinger4Christ Wow, that is an amazing group . Anything can happen and anyone can win at this point.

Oh and Sloth Spartan has done something that has never, ever been done in FAN Idol before and may never happen again.
He literally took us to Space. Think about that. Sloth Spartan brought us space. Now that's a pick!
Side Comment from ANONYMOUS: THAT was definitely a Wow pick, Spartan. I forgot all about it till this sing off. You should have suggested that for our WOW pick in the team round! ^__^

Spartan has got to be one of my favorite new people to join this game and I'm glad he did. Your run in the contest was fun and I will miss that unique sort of flavor you brought in not just the music but the thread discussion as well. Hear that ( Yup it's Chelsea Dagger) - It's tribute time to My former team-mate of Team Varvasious Veluptuous and oh so Venomous Vixens. In honor of your first ever Pick of the Contest... In honor of Your Neil Young Love... And Just for the fun of it, here's a fun cover of one of your picks (Ignition) It's been great having you, bud, and it sucked that I had to be the one to get you eliminated. But I'm glad you made it as far as you did and that you enjoyed the game. Now to close this message off with some happy things... (I enjoyed this pick for some odd reason). www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhs55HEl-Gc

After Bray Wyatt announced the results of the Sing-Off between Anonymous GM and Sloth Spartan, the enigmatic superstar fell to one knee and looked up to the sky, Harper and Rowan moving in closer as if to shield their leader from a powerful force. The lights began to dim again, a sea of lights appeared among the audience, the Wyatt's theme song starting to play over the FAN Idol Stage's Sound System... "Then Crawling Back, Back to the Top, Top of the Stairs, the Stairs...He won't see the Sun again for years to come, He's Broken out in Love..." KingOrangeTyger's cell phone rang and, when he answered it, Square yelled furiously on the other end, "I told you, you fool! Kidglov3s woke up and she's gone! She's gone! You idiot, you don't know what this all means do yo-" The Host dropped the phone when the strange cube he held on to this entire time, the cube that he has tried to open for days now to no avail, started to open with a click: Inside was a note that read: "Waiting for me, you big pussycat? Funny thing is... I've been here the...whole...time..." As the Host read those words, Bray Wyatt blew out his lamp, plunging the FAN stage into darkness. With a wave of his hand, the lamp was relit. As if by magic, Harper and Rowan were gone, transported back to whatever bleak world they escaped from. Standing in the middle of the Fan stage was a familiar face. Caked make-up, mad eyes, dressed in a suit ripped to shreds and stained red was.... Demented.Demented (Addressing the FAN Contestants): Hiya! It's nice to see my real family again . As the extra-special, incurable Host of this Round, Mr.Tyger, I'll pick the category. Ready my ducks... the next Category is... MURDER BALLADS!!!!And with this, Demented leaped at the Host, drawing a huge knife from behind his back... Swish! Luckily for the Host, Demented missed by a fraction, almost cutting off one of KingOrangeTyger's whiskers. As the insane former Idol contestant turned for one more strike, a figure started to move out of the shadows... Demented: HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I'm not done yet, you furball! This is my Season! I won't go back to the Asylum, I won't shut my mouth again, I won't listen to that god-awful music you pump into my head! Yanni! Yanni? Yanni! YANNIIIIIIIII!!!! Time to drag your carcass to the Funny Farm!!! Raising the knife over his head, Demented would have cleanly cut the Host in two if not for Kidglov3s walking up behind the lunatic and kicking him square in the groin! Kidglov3s (still dressed in a Harley Quinn costume): You big weirdo! That's for dressing me up as a goddamn clown!!! With one kick, the clownish Would-Be Idol Host collapsed to the floor, screaming and sobbing until whatever it is that's inside of him drained out like a ghost and he was still. Incredulous, the Host, Judges, Contestants, and audience members watched as the FAN security guards gathered up Demented, restrained him, and took him back to the FAN Asylum. As he was kicking and screaming, Kidglov3s mockingly said, "They're coming to take you away, haha, they're coming to take you away!" over and over again with Demented screaming that KingOrangeTyger would be deducted 10 points. 10 points! For this mockery. This song started to play over the speakers as Demented was being escorted away: Picking up the knife, the Host turned it over and over in his hand/paw and struck it with a finger. KingOrangeTyger (to no one in particular): Huh, would you look at that. It's made out of rubber.

The five remaining contestants gathered at the FAN Docking Tower to join with the Host to say goodbye to Sloth Spartan, who was eliminated during the last Sing-Off. KingOrangeTyger: So, Mr. Spartan, after such an impressive FAN Idol run, what plans do you have for the future? Sloth Spartan (after a big yawn): ... going to take it easy. Strip down my sound.... YAWN.... going to hang around.... the recording studio. Yawn... KingOrangeTyger: Yes, well, good luck with recording. It has been quite some time since your last Doom Metal album. Heh, 2 songs, 45 minutes long. Soooo sloooowww :)Marvelous sound. Sloth Spartan: Yeeeesssss, going to take it nice and eeeeasssssyyy. I'll be back. KingOrangeTyger (addressing the five remaining contestants): Contestants. With Demented back in FAN custody, the proper chemicals in his bloodstream, we are no longer on lock down. We were on Alert Level: Hell in a Cell for several days but, with his capture and Square demonstrating a modicum of sanity and, gasp, concern for others, we have returned to Alert Level: Survivor Series, not that we're expecting any survivors *Cough*. The Freakin' Awesome Network, in conjunction with World Wrestling Entertainment (sigh), has given us the green light to resume our travels, so I feel that it's time to leave the FAN Compound and take to the Road! (Or air, as it were, in the new and improved F.S. Madison Carter 2.5; I imagine fw91 is Setzer (the character piloting the airship)) The furious five passed the time in their luxurious airship cabins, listening to soothing jazz or the latest electronic beats played on unbelievably expensive sound systems. Lights dim, feasting on divine Blue Point Oysters and Grilled Lobster and Wagyu Beef New York Strip with Good Ol' JR's patented Slobberknocker Jerk Sauce and drinking 1929 vintage Dom Perignon champagne and Hillbilly Jim's Ol' Fashion "Don't Go Messin" brand Bourbon (with Cherry Slurpees served in Booker T cups and C.M. Punk "Thirst Bomb" limited edition Pepsi cans for Knalsic). Later at night, the contestants curled up in their beds underneath their Freakin' Awesome Brand Sheets (Now in Banjo!), cuddling up with their WWF Wrestling Buddy of choice: After one quiet night to compose themselves, the Host led the Would-Be Idols to a series of musical venues to prepare them for Round 27: The Island of Forgotten Genres (Pt.1) Bathed in the neon torchlight of a Spanish rave, the Contestants found themselves at the Festival Internacional de Benicàssim, held in Benicàssim, Spain. Keyboard sequences wound up and spiraled out with cool, mathematical precision even as drum machines throbbed relentlessly, the chants of a proud, electric tribe. Dressed in leather S&M chaps and jackets, immaculate white business suits, and a patchwork of fluorescent accoutrements: hot pink rubber pacifiers, carved ivory earrings shaped like predatory animals, silk hoop dresses constructed like cathedral stair cases, the audience gave themselves to the FANs playing on stage: Canctus Fraggle, dressed in jet black leather, silver jewelry dangling off his body like morning dew in a field of violets, stern and concentrating under a pair of canary yellow sunglasses as he mixed, in real time, dirge-like industrial rock guitar hooks as vast and empty as an marble mausoleum with the gothic trilling of wadefan22, face caked white, her ebony dyed hair a dramatic and knotted net, dancing like an ecstatic witch waiting for her incantations to take hold on those who wronged her. The music began to mount, the sound click click clicking like an angry bomb, until an explosion of raw feedback, growling noise, and keening vocals rocked the stage and blew the audience's minds. Next, the Host led the contestants back in time a bit (I can time travel. See. I just did it. Look, I'll do it again... ah, you missed it!) to New York City's famed Punk dive Max's Kansas City: FAN member Jackrabbit Slim, inexplicably sporting a New York accent and seemingly the same age as he is in the current day (not to mention a big punk fan for some reason) walked out on the dive's tiny, beer stained stage. His rockabilly get-up transformed into a denim and corduroy attire held together with staples and safety pins and sporting an ugly green mohawk, the words "Screw Job" shaved into the back of his head, Slim addressed the drunken, stupid audience. "Hepcats! I mean, you effin' scum! Put those needles away, focus now! Focus! Pay the f*** attention to the stage. I know there's some Commies in the crowd tonight but that's alright, time to listen up! Please welcome Watch Us Blade!!!" Avoiding a shower of beer bottle and spark plugs that pelted the stage, FAN Members Square, still somewhat sane, wearing a ripped t-shirt with a large Black Square drawn on it and several metal hoops through his nose and Ssnakebite, the Number 1 Frenchman, with a Snake Mask (right... a mask...) concealing his features, green leather pants, and shitkicking shoes made out of bayou snakes, french obscenities scrawled all over his slightly greenish torso, started playing a blisteringly quick set that lasted twenty one minutes that consisted largely of Square banging on a Square drum and Ssnakebite playing an off-key guitar and reciting French dirty jokes and poetry. It was brilliant and the audience showed their appreciation by bum rushing the stage, trying to spray paint Ssnakebite purple, and throwing up all over the place due to the unsafe amounts of drugs in their bodies. All in all, the Would-be Fan Idols learned something that day. Nearly escaping with their lives (though their dignity has been gone for a long time now at this point , the Contestants traveled to Chicago, the home of C.M. Punk, Deep Dish Pizza, and Wrigley Field to settle their nerves a bit and take in some quality Jazz. They found themselves at the legendary Green Mill Jazz Club, reputedly a favorite destination of famous leg-breaker and possible vampire (seriously, he was a vampire in one of the Vampire: The Masquerade roleplaying books that centered on Chicago) Al Capone. After making sure that the waiters didn't carry baseball bats and the bartenders weren't going to poison their Appletinis (club soda with a lemon wedge for Knalsic), the contestants sat back and listened to the smooth jazz playing on the main stage: The Idol contestants took in a unbelievable jazz set performed by Jazzman on his blue alto sax and Spiderfab4 on his standing bass, it's large strings weaved out of his own spider thread. Jazzman, wearing a vintage suit dating back to the 40s with a high, Billy Eckstein-style B-Collar and a red and brown checkered beret on his hat, set the pace for his arachnid partner, easing from a ragtime march, to silky smooth jazz, then into incendiary bop, and ending on afro-latin fusion with a hint of psychedelic rock. Spiderfab4 kept the pace on his bass, thrumbing along, the notes vibrating throughout the crowd, who hooted and hollered when they weren't too cool not to do so. Pausing, Jazzman took a small sip from scotch and milk, while Spiderfab4 spun a new web and ate a dried fly, a Pork Pie hat with strewn with cobwebs balanced on his head. Finally, the F.S. Madison Carter 2.5 dropped off the contestants at their final destination, Nashville Tennesee's incomparable Grand Ole Opry. Tonight was dedicated to that truly American musical original, Gospel, with congregations of all faiths gathering together to celebrate the beauty of their worship through song and dance: Joy rang out that night, in uplifting testimonials expressed with lilting voices, sober tales of struggle and adversity delivered with quiet dignity and mature guitar work, and ecstatic praise that celebrated life amidst thunderous drums and trembling organ music. Lights dipped and flamed, bathing the center stage in dazzling light, revealing the forms of Z-A Sandbaggin' Son of a b!%h, who went down on his knees as he wailed a hymn into his microphone, shaking in the sheer power of the performance, even as Moonie played along on the banjo, his hands moving like a wave mounting high upon the ocean floor, benediction given to all. As the two FAN mainstays played along, going from Negro Spirituals to rock-infused sermons to Pop inspired devotionals and progressive jazz about faith (of all kinds), the audience chanted and cheered, reveling in the deep emotions and accomplished musicianship on display at this wonderful venue. After their journey concluded, the remaining five contestants brought forth their offerings for these four hallowed genres: Electronic- Da Funk- Daft Punk www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1ZqN_VFhdoRockafeller Skank- Fatboy Slim www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMrIy9zm7QYOver and Over (Live on Later... with Jools Holland)- Hot Chip www.youtube.com/watch?v=52lg3NJV_CkHead Like A Hole- Nine Inch Nails www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV2EUUF47MsThe District Sleeps Alone Tonight- The Postal Service www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUIBnmdJJ50Gospel- Strange Overtones- Brian Eno & David Byrne www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DQyusKTAh4Oh Happy Day- The Edwin Hawkins Singers www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNQXQKflJNAI Saw the Light- Hank Williams www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtolv9kM1qkI Smile- Kirk Franklin www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLyokFc_e8cJoyful Joyful- Sister Act 2 cast www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7soHJvtOTEJazz- Sing, Sing, Sing- Benny Goodman www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2S1I_ien6AGod Bless the Child- Billie Holiday www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzUIZaVtIaMPeople- Maynard Ferguson www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-bPMyoIiVoFeeling Good- Nina Simone www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR1bWhdoIXMSalt Peanuts- The Quintet www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFIG-2GrclgPunk- Which Side Are You On?- The Dropkick Murphys www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKWfnO7fhQMBrad Logan- Rancid www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaQFXtPb3DYDown on the Street- The Stooges www.youtube.com/watch?v=p468i4RYElAA More Perfect Union- Titus Andronicus www.youtube.com/watch?v=08fqHr_KGPYBlister in the Sun- Violent Femmes www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YdQBkxf4kU

Note on judging: This Round will be judged in four separate categories, one for each genre. Thus, songs will be judged against other songs chosen to represent its genre. Each song will be scored from 5 to 1 by each judge, with the scores for all four songs added together to determine a contestant's total score for the Round. The contestant who wins this Round will be able to send in an additional song for next Round.

I will post all my comments on rounds 24-27 but let me say this....some of you guys, especially in this round, went with some songs that I was sooooo debating on using at different points. With that said, my comments Note: 24 and 25 will be posted up now, 26 and 27 little later tonight. Please note, I am listening to all these songs without knowing where they placed or even who sent them in Round 24: The Double Dip {Spoiler}Otherside: Let me say this song is my wall of text so whoever you are, be prepared. First off, so glad someone else can appreciate the art of Macklemore, who at this point is close to replacing Brodus Clay on my crush list (Not Kidding), but let me say this...this song hit me on such a f***ing personal level it's not even funny...I say I started crying for Foo Fighters but I went into a full out breakdown for this song and without getting me banned let me just say thank you, because this song is LEGIT on so many levels, and more people need to hear this. Only thing I can end this with is whoever you are....I would hug you in real life if I met you in real life. I legit have this song bookmarked now...thank you The Last Time: Truthfully, I have never heard a Joplin song before this moment....but holy hell this just blew my mind in so many ways. So many elements makes me want to call this a perfect song. Excellent Job It's Alright: No matter how many times I listen to this song, I can not feel bad while listening to it and I end up jamming with the drum solos....also props because this is one of 2 songs I was debating on for double dip if I made it Material Girl: This song just makes me smile and lightened up my day after Macklemore slapped me into reality Closer: The only other song this round I was thinking about using and the live performance just prooves how awesome these girls are. Nausea: Congratulations whoever you are, you just gave me a new drinking song. Road Trippin: And this is my song for...other things. This is an amazing song I could fall asleep to in a good way. Times Like These: I actually cried during this song so there is that...really beautiful song Be My Yoko Ono: Such a charming ska song, proves to me I should actually look into BNL I Am Not a Robot: Not one that stands out in replayability but this gives me a 70's vibe for some reason and for that along with how it all comes together, I can appreciate this I'm Afraid of Americans: Definitely a song I can get used to. On first listen, it's not for me but at the same time I can see myself getting lost in this song, so good job there American Girl: I like this song soo much just overplay has lessened it for me over the past few years. Cocaine Blues: Definitely a great song choice just seemed a bit off to me and I don't know why. The Wrestler: Kinda like it...but I don't see myself listening to this again Ball and Chain: It's Alright Lonely Rolling Star: I know who sent this in lol. It makes me feel good, but as a song in this round it just doesn't hold up Living Dead Girl: Not My Cup of Tea at All....though more impressive then a small few. I've Got a Feeling: Just not my cup of tea at all. Rock On: The Third and Final Non Tea Cup Let Me Hear You Scream: See Above I'd Have You Anytime: Simply Boring. Round 25: 7 Deadly Sins {Spoiler}Summertime Blues: You know what, screw the rest of the categories, whoever you are deserves the title this season It Wasn't Me: YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! I have loved this song from day 1 and I can even do the rap perfectly. Excellent job whoever you are. Money (That's What I Want): *standing ovation*. That is literally all that needs to be said here Mother Mother: Thank you, I have been looking for this song for like ever and now it is in front of me...there are some songs that can not be unheard....this is one of them. COngratulations Alfie: Ah Lily Allen, one of the few women I would go straight for *swoons*...her voice is angelic and this song is no exception. Been Caught Stealing: I know who sent in this song as well hehe....I will say what I told her, I love this song especially the unique vocals, this song is just a bitch to play on Guitar Hero on Expert . Gives You Hell: I AM TOTALLY MARKING OUT BRO!!! OMG YES!...ahem, I am a big AAR mark Contact High: Brilliant Song, I must look these guys up in some way or form. Do To You: A song with style but not much stayling power which is a shame because I was expecting so much from my first listen of a Trombone Shorty song Be Like That: I like 3 Doors Down, and I like this song...but it just doesn't haave any repeat quality to me unless I was really in the mood...but still thank you for this pick Little Baby Nothing: It's an easy listening song but it just doesn't stick out to me at all A Little Piece of Heaven: I am an Avenged Mark, but this is not one of their better songs Jealous Guy: Besides the fact that we have used every Beatle except for f***ing Ringo....this song is just BORING

Hmm sometimes that's a good thing, fw91. Sometimes you bank on knowing the music and it ends up getting you in the end.

For the record, still ticked about the PMs not going through like I thought they had. Feel like it let the game down. Showed my rankings and I scored them all.
Below are my usual set of comments. This round's exception to judging was that contestants were "stuck" with a choice given to them by other contestants. I really took that into consideration, as I figured out that some might choose "Billy Joel," but I know that contestant who choose that was thinking it'd be for himself/herself. That being said, the round is weird in that some people set others up for success, while some may have accidentally hindered others. I tried to give credit beyond just "Why did you choose this artist or that artist?" Because you all didn't really do that at all. I tried to take that into consideration, but it may not have worked out too well on my part.
****************************************************************************
It's A Long Way To The Top- AC/DC
It’s rock music. That’s what it is. It’s darn rock music. And bagpipes? Such a catchy vibe, the kind of stuff that has given the band the longevity it has. Those guitar licks just take control and drive that pulsating rhythm home. It’s a little short and choppy but that’s just the thing that won’t release you as a listener. It’s fun, but also working a hypnosis with that overdriving series of guitar licks. --------------------------------------------------------------- Piano Man- Billy Joel
Feels like this has been picked before, but maybe not. The oh, so familiar tune from Billy Joel himself. I would say that the song probably has been overpraised by critics, in my opinion, but there is no doubt whatsoever that the melody of this song is unforgettable. This guy has such a unique identity in his songs. You simply can’t do a Billy Joel song and expect to pull it off any better than he does. It’s addictive, and those understated lyrics/vocal set up the power parts so very well. It’s like this guy sits around during the composition phase of producing each song and measures out the effectiveness of every single note and syllable. It’s just that good in the way it sounds. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Glycerine- Bush
Maybe my least favorite of the “popular” Bush songs. I never really got the song’s overabundance of appeal. I really don’t know what it’s about. I mean, yeah, kinda, but then there is always that twist in the lyrics that makes me think “say wha?” Not a negative thing entirely. The song is still catchy in its own way. It’s just a little monotonous for me. Sometimes, a simple repetitive driving melody can captivate. For me, “Glycerine” is a just a little too basic for me. And like I said, not even sure I can make sense out of it on top of all that. --------------------------------------------------------------- Just What I Needed- The Cars
Love that opening. Add to that, the vocals from the group are unmistakable. It’s likeable and really captures an age. It’s the right about of fun and the right amount of pizzazz. Not measuring this up against other Cars songs, but just an observation: not sure this is the best Cars song out there. Still, I can imagine myself (or anyone really) belting this song out as they listen … and even hours afterward. --------------------------------------------------------------- Fortunate Son- Creedence Clearwater Revival
Like Bush’s “Glycerine,” this is not my favorite song from this particular band. It comes across a little too preachy to me. It’s a song I should really really like. And admittedly, I can’t put my finger on it exactly. I really can only thing that I go back to in why I cringe when it comes on the radio or anywhere else is that the preachy nature of the song just doesn’t sit well with me. I also have come to associate it with a really crappy movie or two. Another thing may be that I associate this song with people who rock out to it and love it when it comes on, but they have no idea what the song is all about. As unfair as that is to justify a distaste for a track, unfortunately it may just be true. I can’t help it. It’s like people waving their flags on July 4 will fire up the “classic rock CD”and this song will come on and they’re all just so deliriously happy and rocking out to it. Wait, there’s something wrong with that picture. Happens all the time though. --------------------------------------------------------------- One of These Nights- The Eagles This is what I call the unfortunate Bob Seger effect. Widow’s Peak has Bon Jovi. I have my moments too. The Eagles is a band that just doesn’t cut it with me. It’s not an appealing sound and combination of sound for me. I really think the lead singing is unremarkable in just about every way. I think that’s the key to my distaste. And everyone falls at the feet of this band. I’ve just never gotten it. That being said, there is certainly a reward in stock for you in that you didn’t pick one of the worst Eagles songs you could have chosen. You played the hand you were dealt, and I’ve got to give you credit for better taste in selecting for this band than I could have done. I honestly have no idea what I would’ve done if a fellow contestant stuck me with this pick. And that’s what I consider as I judge this pick. So I really am applauding the solid selection here. ------------------------------------------------------------ Hey Julie- Fountains of Wayne
Good grief. What an unfortunate band to get selected for you. Buuuuuut, this song completely DOMINATES “Stacy’s Mom.” I truly think you may have chosen the best possible song for this band. Major kudos and major credit coming your way. I have to sorta play the round to reward choices based on what people get stuck with. It’s a unique round in that regard. Well done. Catchy laid back vocal that has a hint of a 60s classic vibe to it, but it’s got a 90s/00s pop vibe in the acoustics. I think the vocal melody is catchy as all get-out and I think you have a surprising little gem on your hands with this one. ---------------------------------------------------------- The Race is On- George Jones
Unique country song with lyrics only a country song could deliver. Like this much better than its cover(s). There are plenty of other choices I prefer from the George Jones library over this, however. Granted, it may have not been the artist of choice for you, so there is that. This pick represents the unique timbre in George Jones songs well. That steady hum of the melody is the train engine effect, and the way the vocal “revs up” tempo wise and the little tricks with tempo really solidify what is an effective song. Not really one out there like it in that regard. I dig it. ------------------------------------------------------------- Congratulations- MGMT
I remembered this song when I saw the title. But I had almost forgotten how it went. I love the subdued approach in the verses and while there’s not really a refrain or chorus, the pacing just leaves you hanging on for that conciliatory “congratulations.” It’s not quite as effective as some previous picks, but it pulls off the understated approach nicely. Downsides? MGMT wore off for me rather quickly when I caught on to the lyrics and heard (here’s that word again) how preachy they really are. It comes across as elitist a little bit (or a lot, actually). I wish the lyrics had something better to say than what they actually do, but there’s not doubting the talent in how the band provides the vehicle to get to those diatribes. Some unique structuring that goes on, and like I said, with this particular song, I love how the title lyric is waiting in the wings. It’s quite the subconscious game this band plays. ------------------------------------------------------------- Old Man - Neil Young
Good grief, how stellar is this song from beginning to end? Every dimension of this track is dead on accurate. Priceless and timeless music making at work here. A song lyric that hits right in the depths. Love how he has thousands on the edge of their seats their too. So quiet, everyone soaking in the grandeur of the song. (There are not seats literally per se, but you know.) While captivation is the name of the game in this particular video, I should add that I’m a bit partial to the album recording in this case. I love live performances; it’s just that the album track is so pristine. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Where Did You Sleep Last Night?- Nirvana
Oh geez! Quite the pick less likely from a band among bands. Giving major props for your Nirvana knowledge. It’s a bit difficult to go wrong with this group, but here is an example of digging into the well. Such a sweet tasting song at times coupled with a disheartening lyric. It’s like the ultimate grunge lullaby. And the only way to do this song is with the howl Cobain applies to the vocal during those verses. It’s mournful, haunting, and sends a shiver right down my spine. And yes, oh yes, belt out that lyric at the near 4:00 mark. I just live for that as a listener. Well constructed performance here that matches with a masterful song. I’ll be humming this stupid song for days upon days after listening to it now. Well played! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Even Flow- Pearl Jam
Neat to see this pick back-to-back with Nirvana. To me, this is the emblem of the band Pearl Jam. It’s not Jeremy. It’s not Alive. It’s this song. I want Pearl Jam to be grunge so badly. And this song is the ultimate grunge song from the band for me. When a song from the band delves into the Even Flow territory, Pearl Jam has a hit on their hands with me. I’m telling you, watch that video and listen to this vibe. It’s timelessless. It’s the same awe people should have 20-30 years from now as what I get when I watch ’69 performances at the stages in Woodstock. It’s just something I’m in awe of in terms of an era representing itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kiss- Prince
Once again, a winner from Prince. I could copy my comments from the previous Prince pick word-for-word and it would apply here just as well. I could, but I won’t. I dig it, and all for the same reasons as I’v stated beforehand. Prince just has THAT kind of consistency in his work. Always an addictive choice. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stone Cold Crazy- Queen
Here you were cursed by someone who chose the band who has singlehandedly dominated and supersaturated the game with overplay. No band has been picked more than Queen, I don’t think. It’s overwhelming. Always will and have liked the band, but I make no secrets about how much this band has been overused. That being said, you dug into the well and made the most of it. You didn’t choose the artist, and I have to give credit for managing the pick the way you did. Booster points for this particular Queen song, although it may have just been the result of no more Queen songs left to pick from since that’s all anyone picks in this game, it seems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fly By Night- Rush
This song cruises right along on a cloud, a very abstract multi-colored cloud. This song feels like it doesn’t belong to any era in particular. Granted, you don’t hear this stuff nowadays, but I’m not so sure you hear this *exact* stuff in the 70s and 80s either. It’s solid, and it’s got a solid identity. I’m not the biggest Rush fan in the world or anything, but doggone it, I respect ‘em , and I respect the pick here. It’s just on its on playing field and really difficult to even compare to anyone else. That’s the appeal of the band for me. I should really get into Rush more, and I think once I get to be an old dude, I’ll appreciate this band a lot more than I’m prepared for. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nothing But Flowers- Talking Heads
Freaking majestic! It’s that cloud-like effect of Rush I just mentioned, but man, this is extra-planar. What a listening experience. Moody Blues and Talking Heads do it like this, and I’m not sure anyone else does. (Looking back, I should’ve typed more, but that just explains how effective the song is in captivating me, and taking the breath right out of me.) Some songs are meant to be heard, and others are experiences. This is just an experience, one of those intangible measurements for success that you can’t dissesct in terms of just note by note musicality. Well well done! I could see me ranking this higher a week later, so I’m hoping I don’t jack up the rankings too much if I undersell this song in the rankings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't Let's Start - They Might Be Giants
Truly unique band with yet another example of their unique style. I like it, but I can’t say I love it. I find it a little too gimmicky at times to take ultra seriously. Like I said, I like it, and I never dislike it. I think it’s an unfortunate trap that someone set for you here. It was a really good attempt with this song, which has those flashy mixes of rapid fire guitar rhythms with slower lower key hits. ------------------------------------------------ Diane Young- Vampire Weekend
What a surprise! I’m marking out for this choice in the way others have surprised me, but this one has pushed its way to the top. It’s a song less likely from this band for sure. And you’re a good listener, because I’m pretty sure this song hasn’t been out very long at all. You took the handoff that a fellow contestant gave you and you picked it off and ran right back to the end zone with it. Touchdown! We have a winner! (Would’ve been a FANTASTIC PICK for the False Finishes round. I would’ve marked my butt plum off for that!) Rapid fire guitar licks that just couple so brilliantly with the lead vocal. I feel like I’m at recess in elementary school every time I hear the fast tracks from this band. Diane Young is all the things that make Vampire Weekend great: clever wordplay/lyrics, playful vibe, and just a great representation for post-New Wave New Wave. (Think about it—it’s a pretty good classification for them.)

^__^Great comment. I echo this. Spartan, you kicked so much butt. Glad you played. Hating to see you go! (Appreciate the compliment too. Means a lot, dude. You're good people.)

We do have to make sure that all the judge's rankings are received for future Rounds.
I started to confirm that I received a judge's rankings through pm and I've done so in the thread. What I can do is, before I tabulate the scores, is announce in the thread that I have 3 or 4 scores and to have the judges confirm that the rankings were sent. Like, if I'm about to do the scoring so, if you haven't heard that I confirmed the rankings, please pm and resend if necessary.
I'm still not sure what happened to Peg's rankings. I do know that I've had issues with writing up results, with things getting deleted right before I would post them, so the board has its issues at times. I did do the math and, regardless of the scenario presented, Peg with the other four judges or the four judges with Demented's and Spiderfab4's guest rankings, or all six rankings, the bottom 3 remained constant. Small consolation but there is that.

One Judge's rankings are in and another judge has most of his or her rankings in as well.
