Wasn't that the night that Bret returned to the WWE as well?

The show sucked plus Bret's return had them dead in the water before it even started. Not to mention it was the date of one of the greatest football games ever between Oklahoma and Boise St.

Because simply saying "Look! Here's a bunch of old WWE wrestlers!" doesn't do it for people anymore like it used to. People realized pretty quickly that Hogan, Flair, Scott Hall, X-Pac and The Nasty Boys are best left in the past (actually, the Nasty Boys are best left not existing, but I digress).
I'm not saying nostalgia doesn't have it's place, but when anyone other than WWE does it, it makes that company look like they don't have a clue how to carve their own niche.
Also, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels shared a bro-hug on Raw. TNA could have done a live sex celebration and they wouldn't have been noticed that night.

It was weird. Ratings during the first hour were the best they ever had up at this point. It had the infamous X division match in that cage, ODB vs Tara, a Bobby Lashley heel turn and building up to Hogan. Good build as well, but the follow up was bad and there were way too many people brought in on the roster.

I felt it was a case of too much too fast. Spread all that stuff over a month or two and it could have really started the ball rolling.

I had forgotten about the Beautiful People and Val Venis segments. Amazing they played strip poker for 3 hours and by the end no one was naked. Barely even in their underwear. TNA had the Beautiful People playing strip poker and managed to make it boring. Contemplate that for a minute.
The Hogan Limo segments were hilarious too especially when you realized that the limo was just driving around the Universal backlot and then Hogan comes out and says he's been in the back all day. Though I do find the idea that the limo was a decoy to be truly hilarious. As if a F-22 would come along and fire a missile on it or something.

I've said it before, and I'll no doubt continue to say it - TNA got better value for money out of Hogan from that one clip of him getting hit over the head with a chair by Jarrett than anything he's done since he actually joined the company proper.

You know what, this may just be me, but one thing I've picked up on is once talent leaves the WWE and signs with TNA, nobody knows about it.
We know, because we're the big bad IWC who know everything.
But take for example Jeff's adoring and quite wide ranging fan base. Until recently his impact wrestling page wasn't even on page 1 of Google. It still sits below WWE's.
My point is, the casual fan, be it the kids or whoever, who may not know about TNA, don't have it advertised enough that their former heroes are available to view every week.

The TNA of 2012/2013 combined with the one off shocks of the Jan 4 episode could have got people hooked.
As it was, there was too much emphasis on surprise and Hogan's Heroes for anything to keep people interested. How could the people running the show think we'd want to see Bubba The Love Sponge on TV and think it would catch regular viewers?

Hold up, Boise and Oklahoma wasn't in Jan. 2010. That was like 3 years before in the Fiesta Bowl. That night's bowl game was also the Fiesta and it did feature Boise State, but their opponent was TCU. It was an ugly 17-10 game.
Either way the TNA show sucked that night. I do believe the show after BFG 2010 might be worse though. That whole first 40 minutes was nothing but talking and exposition.

I think this episode of Impact actually set TNA back years, Hogan and Bischoff came in with no knowledge of the company and started trying to mould the company in the image of what has worked for Bischoff and Hogan in the past instead of looking to the future.
I went to a house show around this time though and it was brilliant, it was like TNA of old (even had the six sided ring whereas the television product had changed to 4) and none of Hogans cronies were there.
I agree that marketing is a huge problem for TNA, you have Jeff Hardy who at the time was probably the top face on Smackdown, a huge merch seller and he jumps to TNA and makes barely a whimper.

honestly, I enjoyed it light years ahead of anything on RAW that night except Bret and Shawn hugging it out Yeah I actually remember more people enjoying that Impact as a whole much more than Raw. From what I remember most people said it was awesome to see Bret, but otherwise Raw sucked that night. I don't think the issue was as much this episode of Impact hurting TNA as it was... everything else that year. You had Foley and Jarrett both acting like unlikable pricks about Hogan and Bischoff being there but being treated like faces by commentary. Bischoff making Jarrett and Foley's lives living hells and being called out for it but being a face to everybody else. Beer Money and AJ turning for no reason. The Band beating up Eric Young only for him to join them. Abyss getting magic powers from Hulk's Hall of Fame Ring. Even as a TNA fan that thinks they get a little too much flak sometimes... 2010 was a mess. The only things that were clicking in 2010 were Mr. Anderson, Kurt Angle, Pope, and Doug Williams.

Your memory works oddly. I remember being here that night while watching Raw and Impact and it seemed like the majority of people were only watching TNA after the first hour to see how much more they could shit the bed. Luckily we got an awesome KO Tag match and AJ/Angle but overall, that show was hot garbage.

Yeah... I started rereading the thread as soon as the sow stated TNA gave people things to complain about... And the first match was a cage match that you couldn't see through that ended in disqualification. officialfan.proboards.com/thread/301107/1-10-impact-thread-war?page=4If you care to start... Warning it is over 100 pages long. Also even if raw was rather unmemorable that night (save for Bret of course) it was just another episode of raw, 1/4/2010 was being hyped (and rightfully so) as the most important night in TNA history... and they produced one of the worst episodes if a wrestling program I've ever seen... Especially for new viewers who they were trying to attract.

The ironic thing, to me at least, is that the first batch of PPV's following this Impact really impressed me. I remember them doing a big tournament at Against All Odds 2010 and I recall really enjoying it.
Then things just got weird, really, and once AJ lost the belt to RVD I really lost interest.
Thankfully TNA's product has been much improved in the last year or so, despite some rather bumpy stretches along the way.

Because the show was built around old men trying to relive their glory days. You had a 20 minute promo with old men talking about a stable from 1996, you had the Nasty Boys who should have never been employed to begin with, and the former WWE stars like Ric Flair who added nothing to the show besides nostalgia. Sure, nostalgia isn't bad, but when you try to build an entire show (and company) around it, it makes it look second rate and ridiculous.
TNA could have easily promoted the wrestler's debuting like Ric Flair and especially Jeff Hardy. Instead, they just showed up and did nothing while we got a 20 minute promo with old men trying to relieve their glory days. They had a big change to build towards the future, but instead TNA was just bringing back wrestler's from the past for a quick nostalgia boost. A guy like Hulk Hogan can only take TNA so far when he can't even work a match anymore. Sure, he WAS a big name, and his debut for TNA was a big draw for the company. But he hasn't done jackshit for TNA since.
