You're starting from scratch. From all the free agents in wrestling today who do you choose to be your first signing?
For me personally I go with John Hennigan. Good worker, good look, marketable. Just needs someone to give him a shot on top to become a real top star I think.
Who would you guys choose?

John Hennigan is probably the best answer. Also, MVP could be a good possibility.

If I could motivate Carlito, I'd go with him.

The first guy I'd book is the guy I'd want to build my fed around for at least the first year. I'd want to offer something very different from either TNA and WWE, so I might focus more on smaller, quicker guys, sort of like TNAs X Division.
So with that said, the first guy I'd want would be Ricochet.
My second booking would be a more widely known guy who I could use to help establish my top guy more, like say maybe Steen. But I'd probably save money and stay away from former WWE guys for the most part in the early years at least.

I would acknowledge up front that I'm never going to compete with WWE and try to put on a different type of product than they do. In the interests of telling an even more densely layered, comic book inspired wrestling show (sort of a chikara with less comedy) I'd go for Kaleb Conley to book as my laid back, regular guy hero who ends up way in over his head against the forces of darkness. He'd be a central character in that role, with some aging veteran managing him and preaching about how great wrestling can be when it's done right.

I'd go with Jay Lethal.
-Effective if I want to run more comedy or a more serious promotion, -Recognizable from TV -Had the potential to be a World Champion on TV, but never got the chance to go that far... -...but at the same time, won't command the same price guys like JoMo/MVP would for the same benefits said.
All things considered, he'd be a better, more cost-effective choice- allowing me more chances to take the money I'd use for a JoMo/MVP and use it for a few more lesser names to build around Lethal, plus more on production/advertising to make sure the show looks great out of the gate.

Also, Kelly Kelly. Because I'd want to make money.

Can I snag Batista? Probably not.
Colt Cabana. Dude is marketable and fun. Great people person and can do all the "Make a Wish" stuff. Got a good build and look and can turn a crowd.

First signing in general? Jimmy Hart. The man is a shilling machine, and still a name anywhere in the country.
Wrestlerwise, I'd probably go with Brian Cage. He's under 30, has a great look, can go in the ring, and would be pretty easy to build a promotion around.
I think my first top 5 picks nowadays would look like this:
Brian Cage (Top guy in the company) Colt Cabana (Number two face, friendly rivalry with Cage) The Young Bucks (Top tag team, young, dynamic) Kevin Steen (Top Heel) Frightmare (masks are great merch, young, talented performer with a big upside)

I was choosing from a "money is no issue" standpoint, in that case here is my top five:
Jay Lethal (Top Face) Kevin Steen (Top Heel) Unbreakable F'n Machines (Top Face Tag Team) The Young Bucks (Top Heel Tag Team) Jigsaw (Marketable Masked Man)

1. John Morrison: Still in his prime. Very talented in the ring, as the look, and marketable. Plus WWE fans know him. 2. Alex Shelley: Another guy who is crazy talented and can talk. Also has the star look. 3. Young Bucks: One of the best Tag Teams out there. Make great heels. 4. Jay Lethal: The guy can do it all. Plus again fans are familiar with the name. Again still young. 5. Colt Cabana: I agree he's a great talent is could be that PR guy for the company as for as Make a fish kind of stuff.
