I've noticed this and I don't mind it. The strange thing is that it actually makes the Attitude Era look even more dated. I never would have thought that a match from 1998 would look so dated.
I kind of prefer it looking a bit brighter. I remember back in the late 90s how smokey it looked on WWF TV compared to WCW because WWF would use a ton of pyro back then. Now that I think of it WCW was actually really well lit compared to WWF back in the day.
Overall I'm fine with it because it would be awful if they ever got the idea to completely darken the crowd again like it was in the early 80s. That looks awful. I know that's not what you guys are saying and you are looking for more of the late 90s look, but I've gotten use to the HD bright look.

If you want to see dark and grimy lighting for an arena, watch a DGUSA show.

I hate that the crowd is coloured with red lights for Raw and blue for Smackdown. Thats annoys me far more. Try actually being in the crowd for that. Those floodlights are intolerable if you so much as glance near the stage. and then there's the fact that everyone gets bleached by them. Maria once said that everyone wore fake tan (and now actually use sunbeds after HD became a thing) because otherwise you look stupidly pale. When he's off TV, Sheamus doesn't actually look like a glass of milk. And Sin Cara's mood lighting is because the gauze on his mask glares in the lights.

When I look back at WCW, the production values look really shitty and gritty. I hated it. WWE looked much more professional, like, everything had a sort of "Big-time" quality to it. Im glad WWE tried to be more modern and "Big Time". Always have and always will. So in short, gotta stick with the times. Actually, WWE fanboy, WCW had much better production values than WWF lol. All of that Turner money while Vince was struggling to keep his company afloat and all that. RAW looked like crap compared to Nitro. I was actually made a WWE fanboy by default. Since I wasnt really able to watch the Monday-Night Wars at age 4. But when I look back at some old PPV's from 1996/1997 and stuff like Shawn/Bret and compare it to something like Sting/Hogan or Hogan/Goldberg, WWE just looks better. Both in professionalism and just has a cleaner look to it, more structured. But hey, I am a WWE fanboy. Just gotta roll with it.

As someone who watched both companies during the Monday Night Wars I thought they were pretty much on par with each other. WWF almost always had the better stage set but WCW always looked like it was filmed cleaner. The dark dingy look from the 80s doesn't really work today because it makes it look like there is hardly anyone in the arena. WWE doesn't want to make it look like no one is in the crowd because that will make casual fans watching think they are being low budget and are in financial trouble. Also with HD I don't think it would look all that great either. Are a lot of you guys who are arguing for a darker look doing it because of nostalgia or do you think it actually looks better. I can see both arguments. In some ways I thought WCW looked better because it was always a lot more lit up in the 90s but I also kind of liked the darker look to WWF. I didn't really prefer one over the other.

If they haven't switched over to bright lights, we will be having a discussion why isn't wrestling keeping up on pace with modern times and is this the reason why many people think wrestling and wrestling fans is the lowest and trashiest form of entertainment? I think you have a point here. Every sport lights up the arena much brighter than it used to. Watch an NHL or NBA game from the 80s or boxing match in the early 80s and it looks like they're at a high school gym. HD has made every live TV production want more comprehensive lighting to attract viewers.

I like the bright lighting on the stage and ring area. What I'm not a fan of is the bright arena lights around the crowd. If they'd dim those, it'd put more focus on the ring.

I don't mind the brightness when it's on the ring too much, but I would like to see the lights on the fans lowered a little bit just so your eyes are more drawn to the ring and the stage. Not enough to make it a danger to walk to the concessions or anything but dimmed somewhat.
I often get drawn into looking at particularly ludicrous/funny/overacting fans due to how well lit they are, perhaps that is simply because I've been watching for too long but I'm sure I'd be less likely to be drawn from the match/promo at hand if fans weren't lit as brightly as the wrestlers.

I dread to think how pale Paige is going to look when shes called up to the main roster. She'll probably get a gothic or vampire gimmick or tan a lot.

I do wish they would darken the arena more during matches. I actually kinda liked old 80's NWA matches where it was all dark accept for the ring. I actually thought that made the match more epic. Now, WWE doesn't need to go THAT dark, but just a tad bit. Other than that, the brightness doesn't bother me.

Everything looks way too overproduced nowadays.

Yes. I hate the overly bright look WWE use nowadays. The stages are ridicolous. Wrestling is meant to have a more dingy feel. You would have loved WCW in the early 90's. Ugly stages, terribly lit arena... It's a general entertainment thing. When HD first rolled in, everyone upgraded their lighting. Big contrast between the shows on TV in the 70s, 80's, 90's and now

Everything looks way too overproduced nowadays. I dont mind it. It makes wrestlers look larger then life then before. Especially now when most wrestlers look like ordinary people with athletic builds rather then the over the top appearances and being roided up like they did in the 80's or 90's or early 00's.

Good point about it being a general trend in the whole of television.
I guess the fall in price of technology has made it far too easy to overproduce things and every thing kind of looks too sterile
Cartoons look f***ing terrible now that they computer animate. Cartoons were better when they were crudely animated as it gave each one a unique style that stood out and the poor animation gaave it heart and style, now they look far too clean and as a result the characters lose half their personality as it isnt conveyed with unique facial expressions and movements as much.
Some TV dramas now have this horrible filter applied to them to give them the effect that they have been recorded on film but as they have been shot with hd cameras that are too perfect they look far too overglossy and as a result it looks really cheap and nasty.
