I know this sounds like nitpicking of the highest order, but hear me out for a second. Last night,I was watching the Wyatt Family debut and I was hooked and into it all the way from the "We're here", to the creepy music, to the cool unique dark entrance all the way until they turned the lights on bright and .... it was just two big'looking red-necks going to attack Kane. Don't get me wrong I still think there's a lot of potential for the group (and I know they couldn't stand in the dark forever) but the brilliantly built up mystique off the Wyatt Family was instantly cut off as soon as the HD'bright lights came on and it was just another beat down on a main eventer by a new stable. But this topic is less about the Wyatt Family in particular, and more about the bright bright lights of Monday Night Raw. Is anyone feeling WWE could benefit from a slightly darker stage/arena set up? I know there are probably a handful of production reasons why they prefer the bright set up, but sometimes I feel like a change to a slightly darker more intimate set up would be good and perhaps be less exposing to some talent. I know this is hardly the biggest problem I could find with WWE by a long long shot, I just wondered if anyone else has thought about this before? Just for reference, here's a Rock promo in 1999 (Jerichos debut promo)  And here's a Rock promo in 2013  Just to highlight the difference. |

Yes. I hate the overly bright look WWE use nowadays. The stages are ridicolous.
Wrestling is meant to have a more dingy feel.
Hell I'd honestly prefer the whole show in Sin Cara lights than what they currently use.
And the audience are far too visible.
Entrances look stupid as well when they have 10001 different things on the stage flashing it makes the wrestler walking down the aisle barely noticeable sometimes.

I hate that the crowd is coloured with red lights for Raw and blue for Smackdown. Thats annoys me far more.

If they haven't switched over to bright lights, we will be having a discussion why isn't wrestling keeping up on pace with modern times and is this the reason why many people think wrestling and wrestling fans is the lowest and trashiest form of entertainment?

Eh, not really. I don't see how making the show seem darker or "dingier" would really benefit anything- personally, I think the ultra bright lights make everything seem more important. And I don't mind the "American Idol style" LED set either, it adds a big time vibe to the shows.
But that's just me, I prefer glitz over grit.

Nitpicking it may be, but I agree. But what I dont get is why did they change RAWs rope color because theyre "distracting" for the wrestlers yet they got these huge sets with bright ass flashing lights and red lights in the crowd and turn the brightness of the arena up to 11. Yet the ropes being red are distracting, right...

I agree too.
The dark arenas IMO gave things a more big time feel. Elimination chamber this year, for example, was way too bright. Something like it should be dark. I even think they;re getting brighter, as I didn't notice this last year.

Pretty sure that has A LOT to do with going HD and the higher quality TVs.
They can't sell some dark dingy product for 3 hours.
I think a darker arena is cool for big matches and certain segments. But, all the time...no way.

I would prefer the old house show set up. While I understand it will never happen due to the look, just a spotlight on the ring with house lights dim is my favorite feel for wrestling. It puts the focus on the ring and not everywhere else.

WWE looked much more professional, like, everything had a sort of "Big-time" quality to it.
Im glad WWE tried to be more modern and "Big Time". Always have and always will.
So in short, gotta stick with the times.

But, all the time...no way. Yeah, it was pretty unavoidable for the HD switch. I'm not a big fan of the bright lights and shiny, glossy vibe of Raw and Smackdown, but we get some really cool entrances and trying to keep the atmosphere of the Attitude Era now wouldn't work, imo. |
