They always claim to be in some "booth" but I've never seen them, are they even actually there? are they just commentating over the DVD? Dammit I need to know!

Commentate over the DVD.
Which has actually turned out half funny in recent DVDs where Dave Prazak has to commentate over his own ring announcing live at the event with Bobby Cruise out of action.

I'll give him credit on that though. Unless I'm mistaken he stops talking almost entirely right before the end of the match to make it seem like he's making his way back down to announce the winner.,

That's like back when Punk would commentate, and "leave the booth" early to prepare for a match.
It was great when he attacked Ricky Steamboat, then came back, and got scolded by Jimmy Bower for beating up a legend.

Even better was when Punk was "out of it" at All-Star Extravaganza II because he was focused on the big match with Joe.

ROH probably has the best taped commentary in the biz. It rarely sounds phoned in or anything. Even my favorite announcer(Mr. Joey Styles) would phone it in quite a bit, by brushing over some big moves and finishes.
