Did anyone ever ask this question to you, or even to yourselves? I know throughout my entire life, I've been asked why I like it so much, because that's what people relate me too. They've seen my t-shirts, hats and what not, and I myself have always wanted to know. Because usually when I do answer the question, it's "there's so much".
I'm going to try my hardest to pin down why exactly I like it. I actually don't like real sports too. I find regular wrestling boring, I'm not a big fan of MMA and Ultimate Fighting. I'm not a fan of boxing. Don't like American football. I briefly liked football when I dated a girl from England, but that's because her and her family were huge Liverpool fans, and I even have a Liverpool FC Jersey under my bed with all of her other stuff. But I wasn't much of a fan of that. And even hockey, being a Canadian, I only really like it when a Canadian team is going for the Stanley Cup.
With professional wrestling, it's an entire art. It's a completely different type of artform. The competition and how the matches come together is a huge part of it. My favourite type of wrestling is the strong technical/brawling types. Guys like Chris Benoit, William Regal and Finlay do that style best. I loved matches where the guy had huge charisma and you just had to watch what he did in the ring, and how he would act in the match. Shawn Michaels and The Rock were huge ones. I also loved the hardcore type matches for two reasons. If they were funny, or if they were dramatic.
One thing I do when I watch certain wrestling matches is I think to myself, "what kind of match are they going to have or aren't going to have". So take a guy like Big Show. I know when he's in the ring, it's not going to be a fast paced technical match. What I do know is there is going to be a lot of power moves, and hard hitting action. And usually with Big Show, he delievers. I'm marking when I sit at home and he slowly tosses around his opponents, tells the crowd to stay quiet and chops his opponent. I LOVED that spot. I always thought that was great stuff. And I think that's one reason why I defend a lot of the wrestlers I do.
When I saw the Wrestling Observer Newsletter give the Inferno Match at Armageddon one star, I didn't understand. Were you expected a technical classic in a ring surrounded by fire? No. They had DUD under Boogeyman vs Miz. Well, did you expect Boogeyman to put on a catch-as-catch-can type match? These matches aren't supposed to be classics. They aren't done for that way. They are done in a character based type way which makes people pop or boo whether or not someone gets a good advantage on someone. I thought the Inferno match was great simply because MVP and Kane worked the gimmick so well.
So my favourite types of matches are the technical ones, because you understand what they're trying to do. They're trying to beat each other, and they are doing different things to do that. The same could be said for MMA, and why wouldn't I like MMA. The reason I don't like MMA is because there's no emotion involved. There's no real consequence if someone wins or loses. And plus, it's not really pretty at all, like, the whole point is to just beat the snot out of some guy from what I see and make them tap. It's similar in wrestling, but you feel you know them. You watch their promos, their triumphs and tribulations. Plus, it's the kind of moves they do and they way they do it. You also know that you're going to get a match that isn't going to be this match with rounds and the possibility of it being over early. You always get a show with wrestling.
I watched a ROH show, Survival of the Fittest 2006, and while there was a lot of great technical wrestling, I found my favourite match was the World Tag Team Title match with Colt Cabana & Jimmy Jacobs against The Kings of Wrestling. Because the match was really interemotional. Even though I didn't watch much ROH, I knew that Colt Cabana liked having fun and went out there and made the Kings of Wrestling look like idiots. And they would bitch and moan about that fact. And the whole thing with Jimmy Jacobs and Lacey is just brilliant. And there was such a great dynamic in that match. When Colt Cabana would do something to Chris Hero or Claudio Castognoli, I would laugh at what Cabana did, and I would laugh at how they reacted. When little Jimmy Jacobs was getting beat down, I would get excited at the potential of Jacobs getting the tag, and actually maybe getting along with Cabana.
But I still loved the technical wrestling. I loved the beauty of that, and I still can't quite put my finger on why I like that and why I don't like MMA. And I'm not quite sure why. I just can't get into MMA where as with wrestling, it's just wonderful to watch a good match unfold. So yeah, I probably went off on one of my big essay type thingys, so why does everyone else like pro wrestling?
