I really don't get how this guy didn't have a great career in pro-wrestling outside of Japan. He was around towards the final days of WCW and you would have thought he was ready made for WWF when they bought them out. Failing that, being around in the early 2000's I could have seen him being someone that TNA could have built themselves around, there hasn't been many before or since who had a better all-round look for being an unstoppable monster.

I'd bet that for a while he was getting paid way more in Japan than the E would offer.

I remember that being the general consensus once he'd made a name for himself, but you would have thought they would have seen money in him prior to that. Being on a deal with WCW when they were bought out surely means WWF passed on him too?

I mean, yeah, I would think that a guy that big would get a look, maybe the E didn't even bother checking out who was at the Power Plant?

I think he carries too high of a price tag for his worth to the WWE, even way back when he was hot.

I mean, yeah, I would think that a guy that big would get a look, maybe the E didn't even bother checking out who was at the Power Plant? He certainly made one appearance on WCW (it can be seen on YouTube) but I think he was on a Developmental Deal rather than just at the Power Plant since he was certainly affiliated with NWA Wildside early in his career. Wildside was used as the WCW Development Territory at that time and most of the Power Plant graduates went through there (O'Haire, Skipper, Jindrak etc) at one time or another. However, it does seem as though WWF didn't really take much notice of any of those who were on the fringes of the roster since the likes of A.J. Styles and Christopher Daniels were appearing and touring with WCW towards the end but didn't get a look in, perhaps it was a similar situation here?

Absolutely, WWE developmental pays about nothing and he very quickly became a minor celebrity in Japan who got commercial endorsements and stuff. Size is very marketable over there, and big guys stand out far more.

Bob Sapp stopped caring long time ago. He does the pre-fight shenanigans, rushes after the bell and looks for a first shot thrown at him to go down (or even tap during strikes). His opponent gets a win over a "name" fighter and Bob gets paid without getting injured and is probably ready to fight the next week again.
I assume he wrestles only in Japan because he's a household name there and gets paid nicely. IMO it wouldn't make much sense for WWE to bring him in for a similar paycheck because he's hardly anywhere recognizable in the US as he is in Japan.

Also, I believe he's to retire later in the year.

Its hardly embarrassing as in 2013 Bob Sapp is totally irreverent and everyone knows that whenever he now fights he will just turn up, take a dive and then collect his paycheck. Which is what he will continue to do as long there are plenty stupid MMA and kickboxing promoters who are willing to pay him 20 to 40k to just turn up,take a dive and collect his paycheck.

I feel Sapp would of been another big time WCW guy if the company didn't die out in 01. If it lasts until 02-03 I think Sapp is a multi time US Champion and getting a look in at the World.
Former NFL Player (Although nothing significant) and a trained MMA guy with that size is gold.

Good Lord that was a terrible promo. Who was the interviewer? Man, I really don't remember much of WCW in the last year.

Well it's embarrassing no matter the year. I hate too see Sapp squandering his potential, but at least he's getting a good paycheck out of it.
