I don't know if that era was so bad. Was the exploitation factor bad? Yes it was. But they ALSO let actual wrestlers get recognized for their talents and abilities to connect with fans. People like Lita, Molly, Victoria and Jazz were mainstays of the matches. Nowadays it's just like some sultan's harem. There's a bunch of women whose feminine features are somewhat hidden from the common folk (i.e. the viewers), but more importantly, they're restricted from doing pretty much everything. Very little wrestling, talking, or relevant storylines. Their role in the company is tertiary at best.
WWE doesn't care if it got their next Trish, they won't use them. They pretty much had everything they needed with Mickie James and Melina and chose to fully utilize neither. Whether you liked them or not, live crowds were on their side, and that's what matters most in women's wrestling. If that was for their looks or their wrestling, it essentially didn't matter, because their matches went over well enough either way. They were good enough that they didn't kill crowds in the ring (like Maria and Kelly, two other over divas, tended to do).
To anyone saying Eve, no way. Eve was never a good enough wrestler to win over the fans, nor did audiences find her looks captivating enough. She wasn't the answer, but in her defense, her failure to get over is WWE's fault for trying way too hard. Trying to beat into people's heads how perfect someone allegedly is, is a bad way to make us like them.
