It would be all these title reigns under a day. Holy shit. I've never seen such a dire need to give the fans a false win more often recently than this overused gimmick. It's not only Money in the Bank either (although that doesn't help), it's this continual idea of trying to set something up without making it predictable. However, they've used this f***ing gimmick so goddamn much, it completely ruins a moment, especially if it's someone's first title reign. But let's see how many times a champion has reigned under a day.
Andre the Giant
Yokozuna
Randy Orton
Triple H
Jeff Hardy
John Cena
Dolph Ziggler
Rey Mysterio
Big Show
Daniel Bryan
And that's just WWE and World titles.
Outside of the first 2, this has been done 8 f***ing times in the last 6 years. That's not even including all the other cheap cash ins or title turns that happened when someone retained. It's nonsense. And it's pathetic booking.
To me, when someone wins the title, it serves one of 2 purposes; The first is to transition to the next person, as a means to make the previous champ look as good as possible without having to make them drop the belt to the next in kin with the possibility of losing heat, a good example would be when Backlund won the title from Bret and dropped it to Diesel a few nights later. Both Hart and Diesel looked good and Backlund did his part. The other purpose is because the company trusts you to be the guy and to represent the company as their champion...as their face.
None of these short reigns do that. With the possible exception of Andre (which I could still book him to vacate the title at a later point, possibly a taped segment where he doesn't botch his lines), every one of those "reigns" is a joke. Does anyone remember when John Cena won the title for like 30 seconds, only for Batista to come out and beat him? Remember when Mysterio won a tournament and was forced to defend the title about an hour later? These aren't fun moments. These aren't even moments I reflect fondly on. It cheapens the title when you hot potato it so f***ing much. And more importantly, it shows how poor the writing is at times, so much so...that I assume for some screwy finish all the time now. What is this...Russo?
I mean...is there a better way to set up Cena/Batista at Mania without just having Batista mow through Cena after he won the title? Couldn't you have just as easily added him to the EC match? Or how about Mysterio. If you don't trust him to be "the guy" then why even give him the belt to begin with? To say thank you? To put it on his resume...like people see that and don't ask questions. It's like if I was at my job and my boss has to do something important and puts me in charge for like 20 minutes and during that 20 minutes, nothing of concern happens...and all the sudden I walk around saying that I'm a former boss of the company or some shit. It's silly.
Tonight I fully anticipated it happening. And it's to the point anymore where I just HATE when someone doesn't just exit the ring immediately upon winning. Because once Bryan won tonight, I just found myself saying "okay leave...no amount of streamers or fireworks is going to save your ass" and predictably, WWE went the cheap route again. I'm sure the future holds more title victories for Bryan, but it's really f***ing sad to look ahead to him maybe winning the title 5 or 6 times and it'll be for a combined total of like 70 days. I guess it's just a fetish of WWE's. "Hey! This guy is a 14 time champ, HE knows how to get it done!" Give me a break. Enough of the short title reigns!
