... and I'm wondering, why did they leave out Billy Gunn / X-Pac?
Now, I haven't seen the match, though I'll probably look it up when I'm done with the set. I can get leaving out the 1995 finals because, y'know, Mabel, but is the match that bad? Or is it just forgettable, or what? Because if it's just that it's not a classic... well, Owen / Razor is so short I think Owen's promo after it is longer than the match is. And for that matter, though it does have bigger stars which does explain its placement, Rock / Undertaker is a train wreck.
So, for those who have seen the match which I'm sure would be most of you, is it just forgettable, or is there something horribly embarassing there, or what? I guess it might just be that neither is exactly a huge star, but I doubt Ahmed Johnson / Goldust sold any DVDs.
Though nothing beats ending the Best Of with Sheamus winning, given he's pretty much the worst King of the Ring. Like the guy and all, but goddamn did his reign suuuuuuck,
For the record, I'm on Edge / Kurt Angle right now. Never seen the Angle / Shane match so I'm looking forward to that.
And while we're at it, why does Angle / Rikishi come after the six man tag?

Like the guy and all, but goddamn did his reign suuuuuuck Ok, replace Sheamus with Billy Gunn and you'll have the popular opinion of most late '90s/early '00s fans. Sheamus is only included probably because he's a current star. If he wasn't, it wouldn't be there - just like Billy Gunn.

It was just bland. The whole tournament was. The crowd was waiting for the main events and a DX based King of the Ring wasn't gonna do anything to wake them up before hand.

In addition to most late '90s/early 00's fans, Edge also absolutely hated Billy Gunn's reign as King of the Ring.

I believe the 1999 finals blew because mainly all logic pointed to a "The New Age Outlaws EXPLODE!" finals, but it didn't happen. It made perfect sense at the time because Billy Gunn and Road Dogg were feuding, and that would have been the best way to blow off the feud. So when the fans didn't get that blow off, I don't blame them for sitting on their hands.
Also factor in for some insane reason they booked X-Pac to work three matches despite him sustaining an injury the night before, hence any match he was involved in couldn't have taken up much time.

The Fameasser from the second rope to end the match was neat, though.
That's like, the only part of that match I can recall.

As a singles star, Billy Gunn was a great tag team wrestler...
Which is to say, his singles run kind of sucked.
And it was generally thought of as a mistake that he was the winner of KOTR '99. Gunn's usually mentioned along with Mabel and Ken Shamrock as the worst King of the Ring winners.

I was (and still am) a Billy Gunn fan since Rockabilly. So the year he won King of the Ring was great for me. I still remember ordering that show and having friends over and it was the first time we bet on wrestling together. I took Billy Gunn first and everyone laughed... joke was on them, lol

I remember borrowing this on VHS from a friend at school and discovering that his older buddy had hopped between the PPV and Television X. Was my first experience of porn. I was 11.

The lack of stuff for Gunn (and Mabel) was telling just based on the cover:

Not his reign specifically, just the way his career ended up. He was out of the WWF just a little over year after winning. And he had a mostly lackluster career in the WWF, after coming in with high expectations.

Television X - those 10 minute free-views were very educational. I never really liked Billy Gunn - only the New-age Outlaws era interested me, though Road Dogg was the interesting one there. Making Gunn KOTR was pretty predictable in hindsight as the Outlaws were obviously splitting, and of the two of them Gunn had the look to get the big push from the company. I wasn't at all surprised when he failed to establish himself as a big singles star, though I have nothing against him really - he was just uninteresting..

I was at that show. People went nuts when he hit the Fameasser from the turnbuckle...that's about it.
