Y'know, past couple of days I've been working on and off on one of the (very late at this point) stories I'm doing for Adam's birthday, and I'm considering posting the first couple of scenes of one of them here, maybe trying to at some point turn it into a straight pony-related story. First two scenes are just Spike, Fluttershy, Pinkie, and later Apple Bloom and Scootaloo, but after that it's going to kind of go into other, crossover territory so not too likely to post the whole thing, but those first two scenes could probably stand alone. Speaking of, I should finish that second scene now... Though then again, I've been up for like 21 hours at this point.

Not really ponies, but I'm posting it anyways. Good day of racing, and I'm in a really f***ing good mood right now.
Sad to say, SummerSlam won't be posted on the other place until probably Tuesday. I have one more show to run before the pay-per-view.

I trimmed off the last couple of lines since they're kind of overly pointing toward the intended direction for this, but here are those two scenes I was talking about. If anyone wants to see a pony-centric follow-up on this let me know, I have an idea on a different way to take it. There's still a reference or two in there that's distinctly not MLP-related, but whatever, show does plenty of that themselves. Sweetie Belle thing is related to something in another one of the stories, that one's not getting posted since it's way too in-jokey.
Admittedly, this probably shouldn't have been his first choice. . .
Or maybe it should have been, as if trying to figure out how to handle something related to a birthday, there probably was not a better source in town than Pinkie Pie. After saying hi to the Cakes, Spike was presently on his way up the stairs of Sugar Cube Corner.
Okay, this was an awkward subject to breach with someone, but seeing as Pinkie already knew. . . The dragon took in a deep breath, and then quickly knocked before twisting the door knob open.
"You're sure that you can keep it a surprise? He is very observant. . ."
That wasn't Pinkie's voice. Upon the door being opened fully, Spike did get an explanation for the source of it, as not only was Pinkie present, but so was Fluttershy. Both of the ponies turned to face the interrupting dragon at once, Fluttershy being the first to greet him with a soft, "Hi, Spike."
"Hey Fluttershy, Pinkie. You mind if I --"
"No, come on in!"
Pinkie motioned before the dragon to come forward into the room, and as he did so he pushed the door shut behind him. That being cleared up, the pink pony explained happily, "Me and Fluttershy were just talking about Angel's surprise birthday party!"
"I-I'm afraid he could find out. . ."
Spike had his opinions on Angel, but he didn't quite say that. Instead, he assured Fluttershy, "Come on, Fluttershy - no one's better with parties than Pinkie, right? I'm sure she can handle it."
"Absolutely! Though I've never thrown a party for a bunny before - I might need to brush up on what's popular in them! Anypony know if they sell any bunny-focused magazines or something?"
While Pinkie pondered over that, Spike figured this might be a good time to transition the subject into what he had come over for. After a nervous cough, he questioned, "So, Pinkie. . . You, uh, know what everypony would want for their birthday, don't you?"
"Sure do!"
Pinkie leaned in close to the dragon, a hoof to her chest. If not for the fact that he was very much used to it Spike might find himself put off by the extreme lack of respect for his personal space, but he shrugged it off while he questioned, "Well, uh. . . Do you know what Rarity would want?"
"Oh, of course!"
That was a relief. Before the dragon could quite inquire for details, Fluttershy spoke up in order to ask, "Oh, yes, her birthday is in a couple of days, isn't it?"
"She was born right at 8:32 AM!" Pinkie gave a happy nod, and then she explained, "I can't wait! Rarity's always extra fun to plan a party for, since I always have to try and make sure to keep it chic and in style."
The earth pony motioned to a table just behind her, where several fashion magazines were lying together in a group. Once Spike and Fluttershy's eyes had drifted to it, she explained, "As you can see, I've been doing my homework!"
"Good, good. So, uh. . ."
Spike hesitated long enough to cough and clear his throat, and then he questioned, "So, what's the best gift for her, then?"
"Why only the best and latest from the Glitter Glam collection! Far from a cheap gift, but Rarity's a pony of expensive tastes!"
"I actually find this year's Glitter Glam collection quite disappointing. She sacrificed too much in the way of visual interest for greater function, which I suppose is fine for those looking to wear her line in a casual setting but --"
Fluttershy broke off there, when she found both Pinkie and Spike looking at her in clear confusion. As a result, she finished off by squeaking out a simple, "Um, nevermind."
"So, anyway, Pinkie. . . Just how expensive is it?"
"Oh, tons of bits! Tons!"
That in its own right had Spike gulp, as his mind immediately went to pondering about having to sell his excess of gems. Before he could ask about it specifically, Pinkie shot that down by explaining, "I had to save long and hard to get it!"
"Wait, uh. . . So you already got it for her then?"
"Uh huh! I always make sure to have a gift at least three weeks before the party!"
Well, that put Spike back at square one then. Or maybe he was further back than that, if somepony else had already beaten him to the ideal gift. The dragon gulped, and then explained, "Well, um. . . See, the reason I was asking if I'm trying to figure out what I should get Rarity. I want to get her something that shows, you know --"
"Rarity is always hard to shop for," Fluttershy chimed up, somewhat unhelpfully. "She can be difficult to please. . ."
"Well, if you want to win her heart --"
"Th-That's not what I said! But yeah. . ."
While Spike's shoulders and head began to droop, Pinkie put a hoof on his shoulder and then continued, "You just need to give her something special! Something that can only come from you!"
Hm, that was an interesting thought. . . Though Spike had to question, "Like what? Should I make something, or buy something on a whim, or --"
"I don't know."
Well, that was a bust. Particularly once Pinkie explained, "I've never really hadta just figure out what to get somepony, because I always make sure to know exactly what they want well in an advance! Though I guess it is possible to want more than one thing. . . I don't know, who could you ask who might know what Rarity would want the most, outside of the latest from Glitter Glam?"
Spike did have one immediate idea, and began, "Well, maybe I could try beating around the bush about it, or --"
"No, that won't do! With her birthday coming, she'll know what you're getting at and then it wouldn't be a surprise!"
Fluttershy had an objection to offer forth as well, though it was a little more practical. "Rarity is out of town right now anyway. She's due back in the next day or two. I-I think."
"Well, who else is there who would know what she wants?" Spike questioned at once. It was only after a moment passed that he added on, "Actually, I think I know just the right pony. . ."
"Ooh, can we come along?" Pinkie was happy to jump up and down in place at the mere suggestion, as she explained, "I want to be there to help to make sure you get Rarity the best, most special gift possible! Y'know, next to mine."
- - - - -
"I don't think we quite understood the rules right. . ." Scootaloo scratched at her mane with her free hoof while she pondered this, the other holding a tennis racket. She looked rather confused, and was quite confusing to look at given she had a pair of pillows taped to her stomach and back and was wearing a set of three mismatched shoes as well as an eye patch.
"Ya sure? It's makin' sense ta me."
Spike and the pair of older ponies with him didn't quite see fit to question what was going on as they approached the pair of fillies. Pinkie in particular seemed quite willing to take it in stride, as she greeted, "Hey, girls!"
Scootaloo and Apple Bloom both turned their attention to the pink pony at once, Scootaloo greeting her with a casual, "Oh, hi, Pinkie."
"So, uh. . ." Spike wasn't quite as casual about what he was seeing, especially once he noticed that Apple Bloom was wearing a scuba helmet and holding a leaf blower. While he was reluctant to ask for details on just what cutie mark the crusaders were going for today, after a moment he questioned, "What is it you two are doing?"
Apple Bloom handily answered that, quite directly explaining, "Wer tryin'a play Calvinball, but Scootaloo thinks we aren't doin' it right. Ah dunno though, I think it's perty straightforwuhd."
"I can walk ya through it later, it's real easy to get the hang of." Pinkie was not the sort to talk about what should come naturally to somepony, but she didn't dwell on it. Instead, she explained, "For now though, Spike needs some help."
"Uh, yeah. See. . ."
Before he explained, Spike noticed something amiss. He glanced around back and forth for a moment, and then he questioned, "Wait, is Sweetie Belle with you?"
"Ain't today, I'm 'fraid."
"She said she had to be somewhere today," Scootaloo explained quite directly. Her explanation grew a little more murky after this, as she stopped to consider it momentarily before she explained, "I forget where she said. I'm wanting to say she said 'space' but I'm pretty sure I misheard that."
"It coulda been space camp."
Fluttershy responded to Apple Bloom's suggestion with a shake of the head and explanation, "No, it's not in season."
"Weird." That was a mystery then, but all the same Scootaloo explained, "Anyway, she's going to be gone all day. Why you ask?"
Apple Bloom evidently was ahead of the curve on this, as she eagerly questioned, "I know! Yer tryin'a figure out what ta get Rarity, aren'tcha?"
Spike couldn't help but blush a little bit at that. After a moment he asked, dejected, "That obvious, huh?"
"Actually, Rainbow Dash came by a minute ago asking the same thing," Scootaloo explained in response. "Nopony seems to really know what to get her, guess she's kind of an enigma. We were figuring we'd just make her a card."
"Ya can sign yer name to it if ya want, but ya gotta helpta buy the glitter."
"We sort of blew our glitter budget when we figured sugar would work just as well."
The dragon hesitated a moment before he answered that, which he did with a somewhat stiff-sounding, "Iiii'll get back to you on that. So, neither of you knows just what she'd most want, huh?"
"Ah doubt even Sweetie Belle'd know. Thayat sister'a hers is hardta wrap your head 'round."
Just over Spike's shoulder, he could see that Pinkie and Fluttershy were nodding in agreement to that point. That certainly didn't help his cause any, but he sighed and said all the same, "Well, thanks for the help. I'll get back to you on that card."
"Got it!"
Scootaloo nodded, and then as Spike and the older ponies began to walk away her and Apple Bloom got to discussing where exactly they had left off in their game. Once a decent bit away, Fluttershy questioned, "What do you think you'll do now, Spike?"
"I don't know who else to ask. If anypony would know, it'd be Sweetie Belle. Or I guess their parents, but I haven't met them." And Spike had very particular ideas for how he wanted his first meeting with them to go, preferably with a dramatic announcement of an engagement to cap off the evening, but he of course did not see fit to mention that detail. Instead, he smoothly moved on to wonder, "I guess I could always try outside of Ponyville."
