In 2002, WWE rehired Vince Russo for about five minutes. According to Wikipedia, this is one thing he proposed during that stint:
"After meeting McMahon at his house, Russo proposed his main story of having McMahon hiring Eric Bischoff to be the General Manager of the company. McMahon would then torture Bischoff due to their previous history; Bischoff would then use his past relationships with previous WCW talent and get to McMahon's son Shane which would eventually lead to Vince McMahon losing power."
Russo left again before the idea could be implemented, which it was to a degree not long after.
Now imagine for a moment that Russo stayed. They bring in Bischoff. They're trying to recruit Shane. Also on WWE's pay at the time? Heyman and Cornette. Now imagine if they'd made everyone play nice, and the angle had the five of them coming together to form a "cabal" as the new on-screen Board of Directors, driving Vince out of his own company for driving all of them out of business...

Swerve! McMahon puts himself out of business because he wants to retire.
