Watching this Shield vs. Bryan Gauntlet match made me realize that this age old pro wrestling concept still has merit in effectiveness. For a while I started to think that it didn't, what with John Cena being the one defying the odds for the last decade or so.
How long before we get tired of seeing Bryan beat the odds? I just think it works way better with Bryan and his face attack... cause I'm enjoying this way too much.

Setting a babyface up to defy the odds is Booking 101, incredibly effective. The problem is that if the babyface ALWAYS defies the odds, then it's like Punk told Cena, the babyface becomes the New York Yankees. Why should fans keep supporting that face? HE'S the one who can't be beat, not the one who's striving to overcome seemingly unbeatable odds.
So the secret? Don't overdo it. And sometimes? It's ok to put him in a situation where he has to overcome the odds, but fails. That way when he does overcome them later, it's a bigger accomplishment.

At least that seems to be the way they're going right now. No way I'm buying that Bryan is already getting the title back at Night of Champions.

A) it worked very well with Cena...for the first 7 years. Then he became the biggest, toughest most dominant wrestler who, for some reason, we were supposed to believe was an underdog.
B) the guy's built like a Brick house. Short of Big Show and Mark Henry, Cena is one of the bigger guys on the roster.
C) Daniel Bryan as the underdog will work for a while, but they'll need to change it up in a year or so or it'll get just as old.
D) how can she slap

I find it refreshing to have an underdog actually struggling to overcome the odds for once.
