In terms of storylines Tenay always said when Eric Young used the Spike Piledriver in the World Elite that there was an "unwritten locker-room code" about not using the Spike Piledriver.
Was there any justification to why heels apart from Young seemed to abide by the code?

No, just some Russo silliness.

The key word is "unwritten." The idea was that Eric Young was such a scumbag that he did things that even other heels wouldn't dare do.

Bully put the piledriver over in a similar way before his match with Sting at Slammiversary, then used it on the exposed corner of the ring.
It was not effective.

The "banned move" angle can be a great way to get a heel over as a despicable human being but if somebody gets hit with that banned move, it better put the guy in the f***ing hospital.

It would held some weight if folks in TNA weren't doing moves more dangerous than the piledrivers as transitional holds.

Yeah, I never got how Eric's piledriver was so bad when Petey Williams has been doing a forward flipping piledriver for years. I mean, if the Spike Piledriver was so dangerous, by that standard, Petey should've been decapitating people with the Destroyer.

Interestingly enough I think the Canadian Destroyer would make a great "banned" move in WWE. Something portrayed as so damaging and threatening to one's career that do actually do it is the ultimate scumbag move (and possibly subject to a fine/suspension).

Except one small problem with that... Trevor Murdoch used something like it there. Admittedly it was the Code Red, which is more believable, but still most viewers aren't so discerning, apart from the moment where you see the Destroyer for the first time, and your bowels empty violently.
