It's been a while since I looked at possible plans proposed to Bret for him to drop the title to after Survivor Series. From what I remember though two possibilities were losing it to Austin on Raw and losing it in a fourway on a house show (with I think Austin again being the one to win). However, I think Austin winning it would have spoiled his moment as he wouldn't have had the proper build or an opponent to really feud with after winning it. I guess he could have feuded with Owen, but I don't see him being too keen on dragging out his feud with Owen even more. I was thinking Kane might have been a good choice. Bret could come out all cocky after getting a double DQ with Shawn and rub it in Shawn's face saying he will NEVER get another title shot again. In fact, Bret feels so good he says he will give any American wrestler a title shot right here, right now. Then Kane's music hits, Kane destroys him and it makes him look like even more of a monster. Undertaker could then feud with Kane trying to save not only himself now, but also the entire WWF only to be unable to do it. This then sets the stage for Austin as the reluctant hero, who manages to finally overcome Kane at Wrestlemania. Just a thought. Probably not the best idea, but a lot of the parts to it work.

Austin, Undertaker, or Ken Shamrock would be the best three possibilities. I would go with Undertaker because it would mean more for Austin to have his first title win at Mania. Undertaker was going to work with Shawn at Rumble. Taker could have gone into that match as champ and dropped the title to Shawn via interference from Kane, setting up Kane/Taker at Mania.

Or a possible small adjustment. Pretty much keep the booking I had so far the same except after Taker fails to defeat Kane at the December PPV, Shawn becomes the reluctant hero and narrowly defeats Kane at the Royal Rumble (perhaps with some outside interference from Michaels). This would ideally satisfy Michaels. Michaels could then go from reluctant hero to full-on heel leading to Austin defeating him at Wrestlemania just like he actually did. It hotshots the title a bit more, but still produces about the same results while avoiding the screwjob.

Austin would've been nice because of all the build behind it. Kane, as you booked it, would've been cool too. Both better options than HBK, because it's hard to say how much of an impact the screw job helped turn McMahon into the ultimate heel. As a Canadian, it sure worked for me but were Americans as passionate about it? In any event, I think the McMahon/Austin feud would've still been as big if they kicked it off another way. Vader is a viable option too. The PPV before he lost in a flag match against Bret and represented team USA at SS. But ultimately I'd say Undertaker was the best option if only to honor the first Hell in the Cell match. But then again, someone else could've faced Taker in it since we're retro booking. Anyone could've been in that spot since it was all about Kane's debut. |

He should have dropped it at Summerslam, with Shawn superkicking him instead of Taker. They would then have a looser leaves WWE without the title on the line at Survivor Series in Canada (as they would not be able to fight again in the States by summerslam stipulation) wich Shawn would have won in controversial fashion.

How might history be changed if Bret looked at Vince and said "I'll never drop the belt to Shawn, but I will compromise. I will let Triple H beat me for the belt at Survivor Series."

I'd have done a triple threat and included Shamrock. I know they hadn't yet done one in WWE, but they could have had Michaels use a weapon to get the pin on Shamrock, getting the title from Bret without him taking the loss in Canada, and it perfectly sets up the Michaels/Shamrock match that happened the following month anyway.

Bret signed a deal with WCW on 1st November 1997. So the WWF must have known he was going or seriously considering going for several months beforehand. Given this uncertainty, it made no sense for him to even be champion around that time. I would have had him drop the title at Bad Blood to either the Patriot, Shamrock, Vader etc....anyone who would hold it for a transitional period of a month until HBK won it at the Survivor Series.

Bulldog or Owen, following the Hart Foundation turning on Bret shortly before Survivor Series- then, at the DX PPV, Shawn beats the winner in a "Losing Stable Must Disband" match. It'd Guarantee Bret 'would' lose to the person in question, plus it'd make it clear to Bret the other Hart Foundation members that it was nothing personal and just business (and considering Bulldog/Neidhart/Owen all asked for their releases following the Screwjob, with only Owen's being refused, that would have helped out.)

Farooq. Nation would still be soar on that vandalism thing in their locker, Bret loses to Farooq only for HBK to beat him and reveal he did it to cause a stir between the factions. "IT WAS ME NATION! IT WAS ME ALL ALONG!" And to prove he is not a racist, he invites Ahmed Johnson into DX, since Ahmed has history with Shawn and he respects Triple H, and he still has a grudge against the NOD for kicking him out.

Then he could've buried him on the air and named anyone as his replacement for the match. I mean if he was gonna screw him over anyway, why not do it an entirely different way?
