Let's say you were trying to get someone who didn't understand the appeal of a certain wrestler's matches or promos.
Which one would you show for the following?

I'd say that if I had to show someone why Jake Roberts was one of the best promo guys in the business, I'd point to either the one before his match with DiBiase at Wrestlemania 6 or the one after slapping Elizabeth.

I'd say that if I had to show someone why Jake Roberts was one of the best promo guys in the business, I'd point to either the one before his match with DiBiase at Wrestlemania 6 or the one after slapping Elizabeth. Jake's promo after slapping Elizabeth is my favorite promo of all time, that was one evil mofo. Other thoughts: Hulk Hogan's WM 4 promo about backstroking Donald Trump and the Hulkamaniacs to safety. Seriously. |

Difficult for me to answer some so I'll just do the best I can.
- (Hogan) Not a fan
- (Savage) Too difficult to pinpoint because he was before my time. Very much appreciate his work though.
- (Sting) His pinnacle was the angle with Hogan, sure the ending may have sucked but the year-long build up to his mach with Hogan was nothing short of brilliant.
- (CM Punk) There's two for Punk. First was his promo after winning the ROH World Title. His second was the "pipebomb" promo (the New York Yankees promo was better but the "pipebomb" promo was more important).
- (John Cena) Beating Triple H at WM22 cemented how big a guy he was, his feud with Edge proved to me how good he could be, even if the booking around him sucked sometimes.
- (Bret Hart) His match with Owen at WMX is a big one but his match with Austin at WMXIII defines him better.
- (Shawn Michaels) His match with Triple H at Summerslam '02 has everything which made Shawn so great. It's not his best match but it defines him so well.
- (Flair) I can appreciate his talent but him being before my time in his heyday means I'm not perfectly positioned to judge.
- (Goldberg) Never got the appeal.
- (Daniel Bryan) Two for Bryan as well. His feud and then matches with Nigel McGuinness (specifically their Unified bout) established him in my eyes as one of the best in the world. Summerslam 2013 was the defining moment of his WWE career so far.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin:
Promo- King of the Ring/ Austin 3:16 speech.
Match- WM13 vs Bret Hart.
Both are 'obvious' selections for a reason.
Brian Pillman:
Promo- 'vs a giant pencil'.
Match- Clash of the Champions 1996 vs Eddie Guererro.
Despite the fact that the former 'Flyin' Brian' COULD be looked at as one of the better light heavyweight North American competitors in history, his legacy as a loose cannon is on full display in these two selections.
The pencil promo, while certainly not his best promo, clearly shows his ability to break the fourth wall and blur the lines of reality in pro wrestling. Maybe you would have to explain the symbolism of the pencil, but after that its easy to digest and his message is loud and clear.
On paper, Eddie Guererro vs Brian Pillman in 1996 SHOULD be a fantastic display of athletic ability between two legends during their physical peaks... this most certainly was not. Pillman pretty much ignored workrate in favor of getting himself over in this contest. Considering he spent years stealing the show with ability only to be constantly passed over by management, its not hard to understand his logic.
Pillman spends his time acting-some would say overacting- borderline nuts with classic heel tactics, but the coup de gras is 'attacking' Bobby Heenan and throwing him off his game to the point that Heenan (a professional and veteran by anyone's standards) drops an F bomb on live TV.
To me at least, Pillmas greatest feat was that he was able to con Eric Bischoff into legit firing him so that he could kayfabe 'further develop his gimmick in another promotion (ECW) and then return to WCW'...which of course became a way for Pillman to exit the company for good. That twisted genius is easily understood after seeing that promo and that match.

Hogan at Wrestlemania III would be a terrible choice to get people to understand his appeal. For all the hype it got the actual match was atrocious. The two big moments of the match are the slam and the face off at the beginning, which are classic moments, but there is too much painfully slow action between these two bits. Hogan's biggest strength has always been his ability to cut a promo. For legendary Hogan I'd probably go with something concise yet with some depth. Perhaps when Hogan rejected Ted DiBiase's offer for his title.

I don't think Damien Demento cut any memorable promos when he was in the WWF (The promotion didn't put him in any major feuds or angles), but the Youtube shoot promos he cut after retiring from wrestling are gold. Gold, I tells ya!
