On paper, it just seems ludacris, but for some reason, it just worked. Gimmick, angle, match....etc. whatcha got?
I think 2 obvious ones are undertaker and goldust. Would have loved to be in the meetings when a zombie and a freak obsessed with gold were created.

Umaga
Rolled my eyes when he first appeared, but to Eddie Fatu's credit he made the Character work and was one of the most entertaining guys on the roster at the time.

Cena and Steve Austin have to be up there as well. A rapping thug and an angry redneck both became the faces of the company.

The Mean Street Posse.
To this day I hear ex-fans remembering them which is pretty damned impressive, I mean hearing:
"Oh! Are Stone Cold, The Rock, Undertaker, Triple H, Pete Gas & the Posse, The Outlaws, and Y2J still around?!"
Is something that happens semi-regularly when I chat to mates I've not seen in years so the Posse have staying power.

An earlier reply said Kane. I wouldn't be surprised the evil brother of a popular wrestler could get over, the fact he's STILL over 15 years later is the bigger shock, especially considering the million face/heel turns and garbage storylines he's been part of.

Mick Foley in the WWE.
Guy looked the absolute opposite of everything you think when you think pro wrestler. Even as talented as he is, it's amazing that he actually made it where he did.

None of these examples I'm suprised at.
Wrestling works best when it's silly and ludicrous. Vince worked that out in the late 80s and that's part of the reason why he ended up being the last promoter standing.
What I can't believe is that the WWE managed to survive a good few years with Orton and Cena and loads more bland gimmick lacking "athletes" as the focus of the show.

Kane seemed like he was just going to be another "monster of the week" for Undertaker to feud with and disappear into obscurity like Giant Gonzales, the Fake Undertaker, etc.

They're not WWE, but Curry Man, Shark Boy doing Stone Cold and Black Machismo would be my picks.

Sending Hogan, Hall, & Nash to WCW to kill it. Vince is a genius!

In retrospect, the "Anger Management" skits. I still love them, and would love to see some of Creative try to do more skits just like that, but there were so many reasons why they could have crashed into a wall.
