He's in legit contention for being one of the worst Intercontinental Champions of all time. I've said it ever since he became the new Paul Heyman guy - he's Michael McGillicutty with a new theme and 'tron. He's still bland, there's nothing remarkable about him, he has a generic look and on top of that he barely defends the title.
What's funny is that there's a bunch of guys on the roster who could do with an IC title reign. Miz, Cesaro, Ziggler, RVD, Ryback etc.

A midcarder's guide to winning (and holding) the IC Title.
1) Get on a random winning streak. 2) Challenge the Intercontinental Champion. 3) Win the Intercontinental Championship. 4) Cut a promo about great past Intercontinental Champions and how you'll bring prestige to the title again (optional) 5) Beat a bunch of random guys, either in non-feuds or short feuds. 6) Repeat Step 5 until another midcarder completes Step 1

I just shake my head and sigh. The Paul Heyman Guy could've been Cesaro. It could've been Cesaro. If it was Cesaro and they did this exact feud the exact same, this forum wouldn't be able to contain all the uproar about Cesaro being fed to Punk every week.

God damn! What the hell? What are they doing with him? You've gotta be kidding me! He looks like an ass every week. I was really excited when he was first repackaged and thought Triple H would put him over at Summerslam. Now look at him! I even thought Fandango's injury was fake just to put Axel in the IC title match at Payback for a swerve. What a shame! He barely even defends the title now! His weird neck-driver finsher thing is stupid. The Perfect-plex, hell, even the Axel-cutter, are better than that! And after Night of Champions..... {Spoiler}Spoiler Why would Heyman need him? Ryback rules and in storyline, kicks more ass than Axel gets handed to him. And why did they not announce Kofi vs. Axel? And why did a HEEL Triple H give Kofi the match? Is Axel THAT bad in kayfabe that even the heel doesn't like him? Damn. You know, I really like his theme, the name was okay, he's good in the ring, but damn. WWE effed him up BIG TIME. Thoughts?

This is one of many, many grievances about Axel, but one I don't see brought up much... What the hell is his finisher? He can't seem to make up his mind. Sometimes it's the Perfectplex, sometimes it's the McGillicutter, tonight it was that stupid-looking spinning neckbreaker thing, think there've been a couple more I've forgotten... The only way I could tell the match tonight was basically over when he hit the neckbreaker is because when he'd tried for it earlier in the match a big deal was made of it.
Incidentally, on the ring work subject, yeah, he's decent in the ring. But so is the vast majority of the roster, and most of them are more interesting or memorable than Axel is; outside of those finishers I mentioned I can't think of a single move of his because he's wholly generic and unremarkable, and there is no reason to watch one of his matches over, say, a Yoshi Tatsu or Hunico one besides the fact that he gets TV time and they don't.
Though I'll grant he's actually decent when it comes to hardcore stuff. If there were still a division for that I could see him fitting in. But in trying to be any sort of star, especially with as many alternatives on the roster as there are, it just isn't going to happen.

Your wrong on all three accounts, his finisher is the sleeper. Judging by the crowd last night, its the most effective finisher in the WWE.

I just can't unsee the fact that his little taunt thing looks like he's trying to rip his nipples off after someone pointed it out.

Unless you can envision Hunner slapping down Cesaro and treating him like a joke. Even if it had, at least we'd be getting badass matches and would've had a half hour of Cesaro at NoC. People would be looking forward to seeing the IC Champion work a match as opposed to just groaning at his weird hair and puffy cheeks.

Del Rio is the IC Champ, Axel is the TV Champ. Don't let the names of the belts fool you. Honestly they SHOULD give Del Rio the actual IC belt and make a new TV Title for the real midcarders to fight over. I don't see how adding a new title to dilute the already watered down midcard championship scene is going to solve that problem.

I'm starting to like him. Maybe I'd like anyone in this role of delusional guy who Heyman is using....but he's won me over. Oh well.

Sometimes I think these endless threads full of Curtis Axel rage and complaints over every tiny iota of his persona are part of some weird meme I haven't fully grasped yet.
I'm just not seeing what's so soul-crushingly awful about the guy. Sorry.

I don't see how adding a new title to dilute the already watered down midcard championship scene is going to solve that problem. I'm just saying the title structure needs to be cleaned up. They need to let Del Rio actually BE an upper midcard champion instead of continuing to pretend he's a main eventer, and have an actual designated lower midcard title instead of delegating belts that were traditionally #2 title to that role. - WWE Title. For the main eventers. - IC Title. For the upper midcarders, and for the "main eventers". - TV Title. For the real midcarders.

He was in both of the two best matches Sunday night. His supposedly throwaway match with Kingston had almost the most heat of any match all night. Lots of times it's like "oh, it's ambiguous, maybe..." no. Not this time. That match had the crowd hot, Axel got super heat during it, and if you don't admit that, then you need to learn to deal with cognitive dissonance better.
Sorry if you hate him, but there are a lot of ways that he kind of actually is doing well in the role.

I don't have a problem with Axel.
I think people make the mistake of expecting more of Mr. Perfect in Axel. I think I did too, but the guy is much more of a brawler than his dad was. Perfect was a polished mat wrestler, who would work the legs, escape with savvy counters, and mix in some basic brawling and then go for the Perfectplex. He was also a fantastic seller, dude would take an uppercut and then go flying over the ropes to the floor.
Axel is way more basic, and in-your-face brawling, mixed with some high impact moves (dropkick, waistlock suplex, etc), and less mat wrestling.
The problem is that he has been a booked joke in the Punk/Heyman feud, despite being IC champ. Up until soundly beating Kofi at NoC, it was pretty much a burial. His own manager doubted him, the commentary team doubted him, HHH owned his ass on the mic, and then he lost to Kofi twice.

Sorry if you hate him, but there are a lot of ways that he kind of actually is doing well in the role. I gotta say, claiming it even almost had the most heat is kinda questionable even if people were in to it. But anyway, his opponents were Kofi and Punk. Unless Axel were truly shit in the ring, which I'll admit that he isn't, there's no way he was going to mess those up. Against all odds, Kofi can still get people to care about him and Punk could wrestle an imaginary manifestation of his own prickishness and make it at least somewhat okay. It's just everything about Curtis Axel is painfully uninteresting, so they booked him about how they should by having him wrestle two of the most interesting wrestlers they have. As it is, watching Axel makes me wish I was still in grade school so I could have homework to do instead.
