There's no good reason why, but it got them to point B, which was Savage as an awesome, dangerous heel against DDP. In first several weeks after his turn, I'd say he was more over than Hogan.

I agree that it was done badly, but that said, he probably should've been in it a LOT earlier, when it was still coming across as a WWF invasion.
You had Hall and Nash, two of WWF's bigger stars from the past couple of years, and then Hogan, it's biggest icon...Savage fits in perfectly with the invasion angle.

I can't answer due to never watching WCW, but Punk was one of the first to be attacked by Nexus and then he ran the group.
