I miss racist heels in wrestling. Not the stuff that hits too close to home for people, but the over the top silly things like JBL with tequila bottle and poncho.

If you find this shocking. You don't want to see what the Harts did to The Nation of Domination's locker room.

I am watching the King of the Ring DVD right now, I'm a couple matches in.
Will have to pay close attention when they get to the Michaels Vs Bulldog match.
Makes you wonder if Owen was doing it just to get some laughs from the boys in the back. Like if something had happened earlier that day, so Owen took it upon himself to make light of things and go out there and put on a show. Every time I see or hear him on a DVD, it makes me wish they'd give him his own DVD.

Yeah heels saying borderline racists things was the norm back then. It was almost 20 years ago. We can'tjudge them by today's acceptable standards. At least it was the heels saying it so it was basically being portrayed as a bad thing to be racist. Though I bet if you combed over commentary from 20 years ago you'd find what would today be considered "casual racism" from the face commentators.

I think people misconstrued me saying hearing him was jarring as something shocking.. I KNOW it wasn't shocking at all really, what I was saying was, it was jarring hearing Owen of all people with random racist heel diatribe.
I found it hilarious honestly.
But no, of course it wasn't "shocking".

Dear god, he called somebody from Mexico a "mexican"?!? What a scoundral.
People just weren't such oversensitve bitches at this time, you could actually refer to a person by their nationality/race.

Dear god, he called somebody from Mexico a "mexican"?!? What a scoundral. People just weren't such oversensitve bitches at this time, you could actually refer to a person by their nationality/race. Oh please. First of all he wasn't just calling him a Mexican. He was calling him things like dirty Mexican, cheating Mexican, other things with clearly negative connotations ATTACHED to his racial/ethnic background. Secondly social context matters. Its not about being "oversensitive". Are you Mexican? Do you know what its like to go through life as a Mexican person? I didn't think so. To a Mexican (which I'm not either, I'm white and I'm just using my limited understanding of racial issues here and can't speak to this as well as an actual racial minority could) the use of the word Mexican combined with certain connotations and tone issues can come off insulting. Its probably been used in an insulting tone towards Mexican people so many times in their lives that they're very concerned about the tone its being used with now. And thats totally understandable based on the lives that they lead, if you take a moment to be empathetic and walk in their shoes. There's nothing wrong with saying "Mexican people" in a respectful tone, how else are you going to talk about people from Mexico? But saying "the Mexicans" and such things usually comes in such a derisive, dismissive, rude tone that because of social context its unacceptable to most Mexican people for you to say that. Not as bad as actual slurs maybe, but still rude. Its about the tone, the context, ect. You can use the actual name of someone's racial or ethnic group in an insulting tone. You can't possible deny that. Thats what matters here. Its the same with "the Jews", "the Blacks", ect for those people. "Jewish people" is fine, and YES "black people" is fine you don't have to say overly PC terms like African American. Its just about the tone you're using it in and the context and such. And thats forgetting the fact that "Mexican" is sometimes used as an insulting catch all term for all Hispanic people. So I imagine there are some Peruvians and Colombians and such with some thoughts on the matter as well.
