This may be slightly pre-Attitude Era, so it can be moved as needed; plus the title sounds way more inflammatory that the thread actually is.
So I'm watching the King of the Ring dvd, and they've got a match on there between Shawn and Bulldog during Shawn's boyhood dream period where Jose Lothario is there (so that would be what like '96?)
Owen is on commentary with Vince and I can't remember who else, but it's weird cuz three or four times during the match they have Owen talk about Lothario in outright racist terms "cheating Mexican" that kinda thing. I was sorta half watching the match, and as soon as I heard that, looked up and like.. wait did Owen.. and he did it again.
It was jarring as all hell.
I should say I'm positive it wasn't Owen's idea, and he was a despicable heel at the time, but still I was surprised to hear it from him. Like it's not different than Heenan talking shit about Tito Santana all the time and such, just jarred me hearing Hart with it.
Who knew that (the character) Owen was racist at that time?

My favorite part of that match is the random, inexplicable fact that a PPV ended with the visual of an alliance of Shawn Michaels, Ahmed Johnson, and the Ultimate Warrior standing tall together. Just a couple of weeks before the full formation of the nWo at that.

So Mexicans can't be cheaters? Anyone can be anything, but when you refer to them by their race/country/ethnicity etc it's not cool. Being Mexican isn't being a "race", it's no different than being an "American", therefore it's probably more Xenophobic than Racist, but still.

Yeah but to be fair, they were setting up for Ahmed/Warrior/HBK vs Camp Cornette at the next PPV but Warrior left again and was replaced by Sid.

Theres a lot worse things in wrestling than that.. Certainly. I wasn't putting it on any sorta scale of bad things. It just surprised me how random that Owen calling Jose Lothario a dirty Mexican outta nowhere was.

It's a little stereotypical but I'd hardly consider it shocking.

It's the way it was back then. Mexicans ate tacos, Samoans would carry chickens and black guys had hard heads.

It doesn't seem that shocking to me. I think at Mania 6? Ventura said Tito should have given Barbarian some of his food, so he'd have to leave the match and you ain't right for a week after. Actually, they said a lot of things about Tito over the years.

Knowing Owen, this was probably just him in ribbing mode.

Yeah heels saying borderline racists things was the norm back then. It was almost 20 years ago. We can'tjudge them by today's acceptable standards.

You hear that? They're chanting U-K! U-K! U-K! Well, Bulldog did say he didn't like the fans chanting USA when he was tag partners with Luger.

I love his commentary when they show his loss to Mero
*Owen jumps off the apron and clocks Meri on the back of the head with his cast* Owen: I slipped, I went to congratulate him and I slipped (Even though the video is showing Owen looking smug after hitting him)

It's the way it was back then. Mexicans ate tacos, Samoans would carry chickens and black guys had hard heads. And the Japanese ate raw fish before every match. Not a model of political correctness, but I enjoyed Owen's commentary from that event, particularly in his defense of Goldust "kissing" Ahmed Johnson.

Racist Owen Hart sounds like a New Legacy Inc character.
