In the animation industry, despite huge strides in turnaround time, when MMC was completed the possibility of a Season 4 was still just that... a possibility. 

I'll be honest, in my headcanon she was going to become an alicorn at some point, and there's proof of that on the other board. I can say "too soon" but when the episode was being made they thought that that was going to be it.

I probably sound like a hypocrite sometimes when it comes to alicorn Twilight. I understand it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. If the writers/artists/etc thought this was the end of the series.... it's not like sitcoms, wher something can be re-shot or new footage just thrown in.
