I remember when Kurt jumped to TNA he got a cease-and-desist letter telling him he couldn't call it the "angle lock" and he said he had no idea people had ever called it that.

Because that's stupid...it's not like his ankle lock was patented or something. They did it on the games...it was stupid. I hated it.

Like a lot of people said, they tried to get it over as the AngleLock but it just didn't work. I thought it was the olympic slam in WWF then when he went to TNA it was the Angle Slam. It's been called both in both companies I think. Originally it was the Olympic Slam then by the end of his run in WWE it was the Angle Slam. I distinctly remember Tenay calling it the Olympic Slam on his debut but currently it is referred to as the Angle Slam. I believe the Olympic committee sent them a C&D so the WWE swapped to the Angle slam.

Jeff Hardy named the Swanton Bomb, not JR.
If we are blaming announcers for forcing name changes for finishers, remember that Swaggie's ankle lock was the Patriot Act until Cole kept calling it the Patriot Lock and they changed it. Patriot Act fit the gimmick better.

Patriot Act fit the gimmick better. Yeah, it was Jeff that combined the swan dive and senton bomb names. I always thought the patriot act sounded more like an impact move than a submission.

The Olympic Slam was the move where Kurt would jump to the top turnbuckle and throw his opponent off

He should have changed his name to Hurt Ankle
I always thought Olympic Slam was a better name than Angle Slam

They tried. But you know....JR. That's why we have a "swanton" now too. That was on purpose. Swan dive + Senton = Swanton

Patriot Act fit the gimmick better. Cole just doesn't have much creativity I think. Also, I had never heard of Olympic Slam until one of the WWE games had it listed as that. I thought it was always Angle Slam.

I think they just trusted that the audience could get the pun without making it explicit.
Not that WWE usually assumes their audience to be intelligent, but I think this was a case where it really was that obvious a connection.

Because we already had the Angle Slam and if we had a second move named "Angle", the audience would get confused.

There should be a move called The Angle Driver, where you pound a couple beers before bodyslamming a guy.
