Also inspired by seeing some of the classic belts. I'm not a fan of customized title belts as a whole; to me it kind of devalues a title when it becomes associated with just one star. So sufficed to say I never liked Austin's smoking skull belt, and I actually hold it to blame for the infamous spinner belt, and the side plate switching belt we have now. The part that bugs me even more is that in Austin's case the belt really did not matter; he was one of the most over stars of all time even when he wasn't holding a title, so it really didn't matter what he did. He used to drag the title's along the floor or toss them into the ring, so wheeling out a customized belt was really just a minor note in his overall run at the top. But it seems the idea has somehow stuck as a way of trying to elevate a particular champion. There are some cases where customizing a belt in minor ways works-as part of an overall story or character. Hogan spraying the NWO logo on the belt worked because it was symbolic of the NWO dominating WCW. Lance Storm putting stickers with Canadian flags onto the belts worked fine because it was how his character was showing his derision for the USA. The smoking skull belt really was not a way of advancing Austin's character or his feud with Mr. McMahon, it was just something Austin did for the heck of it. So why they feel the need to try to replicate it is beyond me.

I hated it too. I detest all customised belts. The belts should be as neutral as possible to emphasise that the title isn't defined by a specific champion. I don't even like nameplates.

I can agree with that for the most part. Though I did like the snakeskin backing to the strap for it.
I will contest on the current title about the side plates though: to me, that just seems like the next step from the nameplates that the belt that is currently used for the World Heavyweight Championship started.

As much hate as the spinner got for looking like a toy and not being classy enough for a world title, the smoking skull far surpassed it on both counts.

Also, just a question to the OP...do you count Ultimate Warrior using different strap colors for when he held titles in that too?

I didn't mind the Smoking Skull belt as much as the Spinner belt. Because atleast whenever Austin lost the WWF Title they'd go back to the neutral title belt. Whereas the Spinner jjust became the official WWE Title belt, which kind of misses the point of customized title belts. I like the side plates for the current WWE Title belt because it kind of reminds of the Dragon Belt from WMAC Masters, and that makes me happy. As far as nameplates go, I was watching The Giant vs Ric Flair WCW Title match and when Randy Anderson holds up the belt to the camera you see Randy Savage's nameplate is still on the big gold belt and someone on commentary put it over as Flair rubbing it in that he has what was once Savage's belt. I don't know if this was done deliberately, or just to cover the fact that they lost Flair's nameplate/just never got around to switching nameplates. I like that as a heel move, as if to say "I want your nameplate on my belt so I can be constantly reminded that it was you, my sworn enemy that I won the title from!"

Reminds me of how when Sheamus first won the WWE title and it took like a month before he had a proper nameplate. Personally, never minded the spinner belt or the smoking skull, and I love nameplates. If only because they gave the world Redger.

I wish they stuck with the Winged Eagle...not because it was the greatest belt, but because it was the belt held by most of the recent legends; Hogan, Savage, Warrior, Flair, Hart, Michaels, Undertaker, Stone Cold, etc.
Having the "same belt" held by those guys means a lot more than just having the belt.

Almost as bad as the Rock's custome belt that thankfully never made it to the main show.
Yeah, I've never really like custom belts. (see Hardy's in TNA...ugh) But when they do stuff to existing belts it seems cooler.
Like the old hardcore title - that was probably my favorite improvised belt in WWE.

The winged eagle will always be the best WWE title belt.
It was iconic.

Honestly, my favorite version of the title is the one from the Attitude Era. Maybe it's just because that's the one that was in use when I started watching, but I just love that belt.

At least the Skull belt went away whenever someone beat Austin. Not so for ye Olde Spinnerama.

Also, just a question to the OP...do you count Ultimate Warrior using different strap colors for when he held titles in that too? Yep. That is one that I still do not completely understand; no explanation was every really given for why Warrior was changing the color of the straps. It didn't fulfill any role in a story and it had no stated purpose for Warrior's character. It was just a "huh?" kind of thing?

I liked it because it made sense for the character and his storylines. He was only out for number and he hated the head of the company. It makes perfect sense he would wear his own belt to stick it to McMahon.

If I were to try to get into the Ultimate Warrior character mindset and try to figure out why he had colored straps for the titles, it's because he thought black straps were indicitive of the darkness in the hearts of the men that had held them before he did, and by bringing color to those straps, he was "purifying" them. That's coming from someone that didn't start watching wrestling until 1994, for the record.

That belt is my favorite to I really need to buy a replica of it Ive wanted one for the longest time but can't justify getting one that says WWE and not WWF. I was starting to warm up to it but looks like thats the only option I have.
