I was NEVER more invested in a wrestling show than I was for Summerslam. But since then I've lost like all interest. Why? Randy Orton. Randy Orton really isn't all that significant in the overall big picture. He's just an avatar because HHH doesn't wrestle full time anymore. He's still the one wrestling Daniel Bryan for the Championship, and I'm so not interested in seeing that match ever again. Therefore it's hard to get excited.

I know Orton has that effect on people, but I can't think of anyone else who Bryan could face, or who would fit as HHH's "face of the WWE".

Honestly, though I doubt they thought this far ahead (plus, y'know, Orton beat him at Money in the Bank), it really kind of feels to me like this storyline would make way more sense if Sheamus were the chosen champion. Though really, Orton barely has anything to do with this storyline. This week was the first time he and Bryan had even interacted in two weeks. Though I did think it made Bryan look bad that he's the one who got upset and jumped Orton, and he still managed to, with no help or anything, be beaten to a pulp and decisively laid out.

I think Orton is a better fit due to his history with HHH. HHH even referred to him as the "coal that became the diamond", which makes sense due to Orton's beginnings in Evolution, a stable that was clearly designed to mold him into a future star. One could even say that HHH's feuds with Orton were also part of his master plan to develop Orton into becoming a suitable "heir" to control the title once HHH stepped away from the ring. EDIT: I think one thing that affects this "Chosen Champion" stuff is that making the wrestler in question into a true Corporate Champion would require a massive overhaul in character. Like it's hard to imagine Orton OR Sheamus in their current incarnations putting on a suit, and being put on display by HHH and Steph like a mannequin or a glorified belt pillow. Such an act would require using someone new who is a blank slate (but that would mean they are nowhere near ready to be champion). I think that's why Orton's interactions with HHH and Steph have been kept to a minimum.
