So, went through all of Mr. Enter's Episode Reviews and there was one other thing he mentioned regarding this episode:
It was awhile ago but it was revealed that it was originally supposed to be Rarity who had Spike at her service. They did not went through because they feared that Rarity would come across as too mean.
After thinking about it, I cannot agree with this decision.
First, this would have given us the Rarity episode for the season.
Second, if they handed it to a competent writer (i.e. any non-Merriwether Williams writer), I have no doubt that they could have written Rarity as giving Spike lots of work without it coming across as mean.
Third, Spike's klutziness in that scenario could be attributed to him not being up on the take because of his crush. Also, being in a boutique, he could be faced with work that he believably could fail in.
So, IMHO Rarity instead of Applejack would have been an improvement.
