I'm having a 4.5 hour layover between flights at Newark airport and I'd love to see the Statue of Liberty or Central Park or maybe Times Square while I'm near NY. Would you recommend it or should I stick to the airport in the short time I have? If not is there something closer to the airport I should stick to instead? It's my first time stateside and heaven knows if I'll ever be back.

Well, night has fallen here in our fair city, so most of these venues are closed, 'cept for Times Square. And Central Park at night, mane? I thinks not.
Plus 4.5 hours might be pushing what with the way these NY/NJ airports are.

Yeah, I don't think you have enough time to do anything. Maybe if you were already in NY but going back and forth. I doubt it.

Unless your next flight is super delayed, it is a bit of a risk. When you factor in that boarding is usually 45 minutes before a flight, and how with (especially Times Square) traffic you're likely going to have to plan for an hour there and an hour back, that would give you maybe an hour or 90 minutes tops to rush through the city all with the pressure of sticking to a schedule.
That said, if you're good at sticking to a schedule and wouldn't mind shilling out about $50 for a cab both ways, Times Square is really a one of a kind spectacle, and you would pass Central Park via cab to get there. Statue of Liberty isn't a possibility, sorry.
If I were you, I'd try to switch to an even later flight as, since you won't be back stateside soon, you might as well do it up while you're here/
However, if none of this seems possible, Newark has some great BBQ spots and a pretty unique culture all its own. If BBQ isn't your think, some of the gourmet sandwich shops in the area are truly excellent.

4 1/2 hours from Newark? As others have said, to try to get anyplace interesting in the city (i.e. not Staten Island) it would be cutting it pretty close, be expensive to make the trip, you'd be rushing around and if there was even the slightest of traffic problems you'd miss your connection. As for Newark, well, there's nothing to do in Newark. In fact the city in general is pretty run down and dangerous so I wouldn't recommend even leaving the airport.

Unless the layover is 8 hours, I wouldn't risk it. I wouldn't risk it with anything. You don't know the area that well and getting stuck in traffic or delayed somehow is never a good possible alternative to sitting in a boring airport.

I was there two weeks ago in Manhattan for a week. NY was pretty damn save and I'm sure it hasn't changed in two weeks. Plus when I was there Run down hardly. A lot of building was getting face lives for historic sites. Yes it was busy all the time but is expected. Being that I walked half the time there, never once did I feel in danger. Back on topic you are pushing it because of the airport deal. You can see a lot of your there during the day but all day. 4.5 hours will limit you a lot. Time Square maybe your best bet if you can pick one site. If you had more time from Time Squire Rockefeller plaza is walking distance from there. If you there longer you can plan out and see a lot. When I was there I saw The Empire State Building went up in that which the view was breath taking. The Statue of Liberty, and 9/11 in one day. That was starting at 8 am and going until dinner time 5 or 6. Our hotel was a half a block to Time Squire which made it easy to enjoy it. NY is a lot of fun if you know where to go and have the time.

Newark has a few nice spots. The Ironbound district is pretty safe, and the area around the Prudential Center, too. Other than that the city's a dump. But it's a lot better than it used to be.

Newark airport is very close to Manhattan , but considering traffic it can take an hour or more to get there , so you lose about half the time right there. At best you may able to go times square and take a picture and straight back to the airport

I think the past year has been a pretty dramatic difference in terms of an improvement. Plus, let's be real, the BBQ in Newark is incredible.

Newark does have some pretty good BBQ.
Mayor Booker's and the money the Prudential Center's brought in has done a lot to turn the city's fortunes around. As bad as Newark can be, it was WAY worse this time ten years ago.

Even if I only have ten minutes it's OK, I just wanna be able to say I've been to New York.
