There is no possible way for the commentary team to convince me that R-Truth had a shot of winning that match; all they said was IF RYBACK WINS...and then went on to talk about how Punk is going to have to beat Ryback's time, BEFORE THE BELL RANG. They never explained what would happen if R-Truth won, and pretty much all sold the match as a guaranteed Ryback win, not because he's strong, but because the logical story progression needs a Ryback victory.
What a terrible way to decide who picks the gimmick. Why not just have Punk vs Axel (representing Heyman) with the winner picking the stip? Is it because they can't use CAN CM PUNK DEFEAT CURTIS AXEL as a dramatic hook anymore and instead went with CAN CM PUNK BEAT CURTIS AXEL FAST ENOUGH?

Beat the Clock is a dubious gimmick unless its for a title shot or some actual tangible reward (like number 30 in the Rumble).

It's easily one of the stupidest gimmicks they constantly bring back. I also hate how it's targeted towards the people who usually win it. Case in point, Super Crazy beating Kennedy, yet not getting a damn thing out of the deal.

Beat the Clock only works when every competitor involved has a stake in the overall prize.

they should bring back the Red Rooster for a "Beat the Cock" challenge whoever chokes the rooster out quickest wins.

Beat the Clock only works when every competitor involved has a stake in the overall prize. Exactly. They kept mentioning tonight that Punk has to beat Ryback's time in order to pick the stipulation, yet they never point out the occurrence that if Axel wins, he gets something. IF you must go the route of having it favor only one set of guys, then you put them in the ring with local jobbers that have absolutely no chance of winning. It also allows for the matches to be shorter and it makes it easier to tolerate it for 5 minutes, as opposed to 20.

I couldn't help but wonder why Heyman didn't just rush to the ring and slap Axel. Thus giving Axel the DQ victory and allowing Ryback to choose the stipulation.

I liked it this time because I knew how long I will have to see Curtis Axel on TV

Beat the Clock only works when every competitor involved has a stake in the overall prize. Yep. Case in point: The first time they ran it in 2005, to decide who entered the Elimination Chamber last. If any of the six guys in the Chamber lost, whoever beat them would've taken their place. Meaning it was entirely possible for the match to change entirely, if Maven beat Randy Orton or Eugene beat Edge, or Rhyno beat Batista(yes, I remember all the matches ; Jericho/Christian, Benoit/Viscera, and Triple H/Shelton). I mean, logically, it wasn't actually going to happen, but just putting the possibility there was enough to make that entire Raw must-see, just in case someone DID lose.

It seems like this one actually told a story, because Heyman was yelling for Axel to get out of the ring and stall, and instead he treated it as an opportunity to actually beat Punk. Hopefully, this actually plays into the Heyman story.

They did mention if R-Truth beat Ryback, albeit it was lost in the jumble of mess that was commentating; if Ryback lost, Punk merely needs to beat Axel and not worry about time. R-Truth was trying to play spoiler. Most matches where the stipulation is only one-sided allude to that, even if not explicitly said. But this time, it actually was.

This was actually one time I liked it. Liked the fact that they outright had R-Truth trying to waste time by running around the ring, and the fact that the commentary mentioned it was sound strategy and his relationship with Punk. Also, although you knew Ryback was going to win, the match actually was pretty competitive and lasted longer than I thought it would.

Axel has a cause to want to f*** over Punk, as Truth does with Ryback. I kind of liked the way they did it with Triple H and Austin in the build to the Three Stages of Hell match, where they picked representatives for a match, and those two faced one another. I guess then it was just a pride thing, but it was at least sort of novel.

I want to see a beat the clock where the objective is to determine who can destroy an actual clock in the fastest amount of time

I want to see a beat the clock where the objective is to determine who can destroy an actual clock in the fastest amount of time Only if they bring back The Boogeyman for that episode. They could have someone like Heyman destroy it quickest after bringing out some weapon and doing it in like 20 seconds, thinking he's won only for Boogeyman to come out unexpectedly and win in 1 second by smashing it on his head. Boogeyman disappears and the story and/or reward is never mentioned again.
