So my son is almost 4 and ever since my wife and I started talking about having kids, I couldn't wait to introduce wrestling to him/her and enjoy it together.. However, now it's like part of me doesn't want him to see it because of the violence etc.. I'm not even sure how to introduce it to him when I finally do.. Any thoughts on this?

My daughter is approaching 1 but i've always watched wrestling around her since she was born and eventually she gathered her own interest in it just like I did when my brothers watched when i was young. My partner thought I was imagining it but she now also agrees that my daughter likes wrestling - fact. The way I see it if you introduce wrestling early on as a form of entertainment then your child would disginguish the difference between entertainment and real violence. Its a certainty your son will come across some form of violence when he approaches school age so if he knows that wrestling is there purely for entertainment then he will know the difference and stay clear of actual violence. Thats how I saw it at about his age anyway. Hope this helps!

Well I was about that age when I started watching wrestling (born June '92, first ever exposure was WM13 - either late March or early April 1997 since it was on tape) and I turned out okay so I don't see why you couldn't introduce your son to it now. It's important to distinguish the difference between staged entertainment and real violence but nobody really ever showed me that, I kinda just figured it out for myself. Everybody's different but I wouldn't say it's too early to introduce him to it.

I started at 6 and turned out OK. I got my Cousin Enis started at age 2. Didn't work out well he got thrown out of several pre-schools for dishing out Stone Cold stunners to other kids and flipping off teachers telling them to Suck It as he did the crotch chop.

You could just do what my parents did and let me know that it was all "fake bullshit" when I started watching. Say it in a nicer way though.

Started watching WCW and occasionally glancing at WWF at age 10 or so. When I was about 12, switched over to following WWF once WCW got too confusing.

I started watching at a very early age. 3 or 4. It's just wrestling man, it's not even that violent. Just make sure to explain to him that the Attitude Adjustment is NOT going to work in a real fight.

Started watching at 10 in 1990 (perfect time to become a fan IMO as the new breed of wrestlers were coming into their own, and the legends of the 70s and 80s were still active).

I started getting into "action" shows and things like that when I started being around other boys, which was when I started kindergarten, so about 5. Before that, I rarely had any contact with kids my age, and when I did, they were all girls, so that sort of entertainment was presented as unappealing to me. I had gotten some TMNT action figures for a birthday when I was about 4, and I played with them like stuffed animals, making little beds for them and such. About a year or so later, I was all about TMNT, Batman, and WWF.

I was 5. My parents made sure to explain the guys were friends and they were not hurting each other.

I was a full blown wrestling fan since I before I can remember. My dad let me start watching wrestling when I was a toddler. If I got too excited or wanted to rough house with my friends, my dad would yell "KNOCK IT OFF!! IF YOU KEEP DOING THAT YOU CAN'T WATCH WRESTLING" and then I would stop. I've never been in a fight and never have been aggressive towards people other than wrestling with my friends as a kid.
Parenting influence trumps TV influence.

I can't remember ever NOT being a fan, however my dad was a wrestler in the Memphis promotion, so I guess I was a special situation. I can remember being backstage when I was 5-6. Sputnik Monroe was still around then (early 1960s) as well as Len Rossi, Don and Al Greene, Tojo Yamamoto and the Fabulous Jackie Fargo. The first world title i remember seeing was in 1967 when Fargo lost to NWA champion Gene Kiniski in Memphis.
Would I have been as big a fan if my dad hadn't worked in the business? I don't know, but I do remember all my friends seemed to be into wrestling as much as I was. We played "wrestling" in the neighborhood, and everybody picked a wrestler to imitate. I usually chose Tojo Yamamoto. (My dad was a jobber, and I didnt want to be a loser! -this was before I started to understand the business) I started to figure it out at about puberty, and my dad explained the whole thing one day when I asked him about it around that age. It didnt change anything for me-I was still a fan, and have been ever since.
I admit, however, to having become less interested in recent years. The closure of WCW was one reason. After that, I didn't consistently watch any wrestling. When TNA got their network spot I started watching them semi-regularly, but not like I had before. And in the last 2-3 years I've watched TNA infrequently. The whole Hogan/Bischoff experiment turned me off. Now, I keep up with wrestling mostly thru this website and a few other places. I tried watching RAW a few weeks ago for the 1st time in several years, and just couldn't sit thru it for more than a few minutes.

Clotheslining, DDTing, and press-slamming children is a rite of passage. But I've been told I have to stop now that I'm in my 30's.

I was also told from the start that it was fake, but I never believed it was real. I thought of it like a TV show or movie, and could get sucked into it the same way I could when I was watching the Ninja Turtles on TV.
